BANDIT OPERATIONS i WORRY ALLIED HEADS ? AT CONSTANTINOPLE

(By Associated Press) CONSTANTINOPLE, May SO. Alarm over Ihe safety of Constantinople is apparently felt by allied officials here. Operations by bandiis are assuming serious proportions, particularly in Thrace, large numbers of Bolsheviki are arriving and the American embassy is under guard of armed sailors. Brigadier General Harrington, commander of allied forces here h:is gon to London to lay the military situation before British authorities. Turkish Nationalists declare that banditry is being encouraged by the Greeks, who. they allege, are seeking an excuse for seizing Constantinople. The Greeks on the other hand, state that uprisings are being stimulated by Bulge rias chiefs. At any rate life and property are not considered safe in the region about this city. The country is threatened with famine, as the fields are untitled, the people being terrorizing and afraid to leave their villages, it is said that thousands of Hussions who formerly were soldiers under command of General Wrangel

have turned out laws. Desertsers from the Greek asd Turkish armies are included in the bands operating outside the- city. Greek troops having their bases at Rodosto and Adrianople are in constant skirmishes with the bandits and the Sultan's government has sent 400 gendarmes to patrol highways. Two armored trains have been sent out by the French to prevent outlaws from cutting telegraph wires and to protect the ""Orient express," the through Paris-Constantinople train. British troops are guarding highway crossings along the railroad loading westward from the city.
