WIRELESS TELEPHONE ACROSS ATLANTIC IS DREAM OF MARCONI
By Associated Press LONDON. May 13. Slgnor Marconi, inventor of wireless, pins his faith to trans-Atlantic telephonic communication by wireless instead of by cable, dspite the recent successful experiments in America connecting Cuba with the mainland in a telephone circuit extending 5,000 miles. "I still think," he said, "that the only satisfactory method of telephon- ' ing across the Atlantic is by wireless At present we can only do a short distance by cable telephone from London to Paris is as far as we can do now. In attempts to communicate with Spain we have failed. Up to 100 or 2fW miles of cable it works. With 1,000 miles or more of cable it won't work. "Wireless telephony, of course, has not yet been developed to the same extent as the wire telephone, but it is being rapidly improved. We have not done anything like 5,000 miles thu3 far. We have spoken successfully from London to Rome, and we have got words through to America, but not in a commercial or practical way. At present there are certain disturbances of the waves in space, the cause of which has not yet been discovered."

there is a limit to the overhead expense, and the management which will fit an institution of any certain size. In my judgment, m any place in any county, where the taxable property in the town and township approach equal amounts, the Greencastle plan is better, because it is more democratic and because it more nearly approaches the American plan of home rule. However, there are only two such townships in the county. I am not willing to force improvement on the people. In bringing about any plan of consolidation, the will of the people must be consulted and the co-operation of the people secured be
fore any good plan can succeed. I believe every community "in Wayne county should have a commissioned high school if the patrons are willing to pay the price. In fact, any individual who wishes too establish a private acaremy or school, does it on bis own initiative if he can afford it. However, I do not believe in forcing schools on the people any nore than I believe in forcing any, particular form of government on a people. , I am in favor of making the best possible use of exciting equipment and conditions, confident that the patrons will improve conditions as they are able. I favor consolidation, because it affords an opportunity to give children
the most in education near our homes. If we should live up to our opportunity I think somewhere In Wayne county the. taxpayers should have a Junior college, without any more expense for school purposes, than we are paying at present. We are paying enough now, but our efforts are minimized by retracing, duplicating, and paying twice for things that are supposed to accomplish the same purpose. I agree with Mr. C. O. Williams's statement, that Wayne county is too big. the responsibilities of the superintendent's office too heavy for ono any one man alone to do most effective work in supervising all the schools of the county. One reason I favor the
Greencastle plan in communities where it is possible, is that it provides more local control, relieving tha superintendent. I believe in co-operating with, rather than antagonizing, the spirit in favor of better schools, which is in the various communities. ARTHUR H. HINES.

in regard to .Mr. i toiuj s m.u..wvh. I would say that 1 did oppose the j Randolph county plan as applied to J Hagerstown condition?, and not be-j cause Randolpn county has consoli-1 dated school. There are seven plans I of consolidation, and I should be thej last one to say that Mr. Teetor is op-1
