BETTER MUSIC FLEA $ ADVANCED BY MORTON IN CHICAGO MEETING (By Associated Press) CHICAGO. May 9. Jazz is the evil spirit of music, according . to Dr. Frank E. Morton, chairman of the Music Industries committee, in speaking af the Music Trades convention here today. "Jazz," said Dr. Morton, "expresses hyisteria and incites to idleness, revelry, dissipation, destruction, discord and chaos. It accords with the devastating, volcanic spirit that has burst forth over the world in the last six years. Rhythm and musical vibrations swayed the half savage voodooist like a powerful intoxicant. Jazz is compounded after the same formula as the Voodoo chants. Typi

fying the unbalanced state of humanity's mind it tends to unhinge it more and more. Human nerve tissues respond to this perverted organization of sound Just -as readily as did those of the Voodoo Zealots, and just as readily will they respond to music of the higher, ennobling order. The world needs good music as never before. "Seldom do you hear 'Home Sweet Home sung now. Formerly it dropped in upon us in concert encores and quiet, social and family gatherings. And every rendition of it re-acted on the cerebal tissue of those who sang and to a lesser extent on those who listened. With 'Home Sweet 6ilenced, home itself tends to disappear. With home swallowed up in the cabaret, the great stabilizing centers of society is lost. '"Make music virile. Put red blood into it. Associate it with two-fisted men who do things. Keep away from 'w the Jazz abominations. Restore the orderly harmonize.', organization of industrial and social life with good music. Bring back "Home Sweet Home." I ,

The Theatres

MURRAY . Manager Holland of the Murray Theatre has secured for a limited engagement, beginning today, a most interesting story called "The Lamplighter."' It was produced by "William Vox and has for its star winsome little Shirley Mason, whose great successes in "Wing Toy", "Her Elephant Man" and "Love's Harvest" are matters of screen history. - The story of "The Lamplighter," In which sheer beauty of narrative and fustained tension mark it as an exceedingly fine piece of screen writing, is from the pen of Maria Susanna Cummins. This talented author has supplied Miss Mason with a vehicle that promises delight for her large army of admirers. MURRETTE Tom Mix picked himself up out of a sand pile and rubbed his breeches ruefully. "The next time," sad he,

"I'll use a washboard for a seat." It was a scene in the William Fox picture "The Road Demon," which is now being shown at the Murrette theatre. McCabe. a role assumed by Lloyd Bacon, is placed in jail as a result of an automobile race on the read between him and Tom who plays the part of "Hap" Higgins. Tom determines to get McCabe out of trouble, and, finding him at work on .1 rock pile, making little ones out of

Miss Plckford has ever appeared. The story, written by Frances Marion and based on Eleanor H. Porter's celebrated "PoUy&nna" books, deals with the life of a little birl who made it her business to spread the spirit of gladness wherever her pathway led.

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind, May 9. Veterans of the World war, who are disabled by disease or wounds and by reason of such disability are either temporarily or permanently incapacitated from earning a living may be

admitted to the ten National Homes for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers, according to 'national headqueraters of the American Legion. Those seeking admission are not asked the cause of their disabilities; the homes will accept the victim of peace as well as the victim of war. The important consideration is the ac tual disability, Legion officials- state. The declaration of the ex-service men's organization is baaed upon an Act of Congress passed on June 5, 1920. To obtain admission(to the homes, a disabled ex-service man-should either apply in person to branch home or should communicate wtb the governor of a branch ."home. CASS COUNTY DELINQUENT TAX LIST BREAKS RECORDS LOGANS PORT, Ind.. May 9. J. J. The star grabs McCabe, flings him into a wheelbarrow and slides down a 60-degree hill to freedom with him. When this scene was made the pair went down the hill so fast that Tom was forced to sit and dig his heels in the ground. It was very wearing on that part of him in contact with the hill. WASHINGTON A picture that will appeal because it is strictly alive is "The Girl With t,he Jazz Heart," in which Madge Kennedy is feautred by Goldwyn. She has never appeared to better advantage than in her latest picture, "The Girl With the Jazz Heart," from the story byRobert Shannon, which is running at the Washington theatre. She plays two roles, one that of the title, the jazz hearted damsel, ana the other, that of a distinctly opposie type. She leaves nothing to be asked in either part, and the "Madge Kennedy fans" will be hard put to decide whether they like her better as a de

mure Mennonite brunette, or a dance-!

loving, action-craving blonde city girl. The story of "The Girl With the Jazz Heart," isn't intended to teach a moral, nor it is a defence of "jazz." So those who don't care for the tomtoms and rag-time needn't be alarmed. It appeals because It is strictly alive from the beginning to the end, and because it is so thoroughly American, and up-to-date American, at that. GRACE M. E.
