ADELAIDE THURSTON DISCUSSES NEED FOR RELIEF IN IRELAND Ireland's need for relief was told by Miss Adelaide Thurston, of New York, well known actress and public speaker, in the high school auditorium" Sunday night. 'William H. Kelly, of this city, presided. A local solo, was sung by. Miss Nellie Brandenberg, accompanied on .the piano by Miss Lucile Carney "The most serious condition encountered in Ireland has been brought about by the destruction of 47 creameries." Miss Thurston said. "These creameries represented the backbone of Ireland' agricultural prosperity. Strikes Dairymen Hardest "This destruction has deprived 5,000 dairymen of a market for their milk and cream and has deprived the surrounding territory of dairy foods. An effort is now being made to rebuild these creameries for the purpose of furnishing employment for workers and to provide nourishing food-stuffs for persons in the vicinity. "The Irish rejief campaign is solely humanitarian, it ., being non-political and non-sectarian. It is hoped to raise at least $340,000 in Indiana and $10,000,000 in the United States. An American committee of Quakers has reported that $350,000 monthly is required for relief among the suffering of Ireland." Reports have been received saying that on account of general trade depressions nationally, upwards of 150.000 men are unemployed Laborers are averaging less than $10 weekly, and many have been without work for months. Their clothing is ragged and their v principal diet is bread and tea, according to the report.

ELMS RECOMMENDED FOR TREE MEMORIAL BY LOCAL BIOLOGIST

Prof. Millard S. Markle, head of the

biology department of Earlham col

lege, is a supporter of the movement to plant trees along our national highways as a. memorial to all ex-service men who served in the World war. Prof. Markle favors the planting of elm, sugar or Norway maple. "We should plant trees that will last," Prof. Markle said. "Some trees are short lived, growing rapidly and dying out quickly. They would then have to be replaced. Elms are a good tree. They grow in unconventional form and live for several hundred years." "What about fruit trees?" he 'was asked. "About the only benefit from fruit trees," he replied, "would be the flowers. They would not yield much fruit without spraying and attentive care. Nut trees would be a good tree to plant." ."How about the effect of trees on tne condition of the roads?" Sees no Harm "I do not think good trees would harm the national highways, as they sire either cement or hard macadam, it would be different with a plain

gravel road. Care should be taken

that trees should not be planted too close to a cement road so that the roots would not crack the surface.

"Another thing which should be specified, is that nothing should be nailed on the tree trunks. Advertising signs even now mar many beauti

ful views. I believe the time will come when agitation will be started j

can be purchased cheaply at any nursery, and their root system is complete. A Prominent Forester Write. "Don't plant them nearer together than 40 feet. Elms should be 70 feet apart, walnuts 40 and 50, and maples 60. If you want your trees to overlap, plant elms. The sycamore and plane trees are stately and tall, and will not overlap. "If you own the land plant the trees only two feet from the road. If the property is ever sold or divided, the trees might be cut down. The next tenant might not be so fond of them. If planted along a road line and they are beautiful, no one would have the

heart to cut them down; and if the property lines of division were changed the trees would not be likely to interfere even a great many years hence."'
