menace to democracy will soon give way to the perfect enlightenment which is the best guar
dian df our rights. - Reports from the big cities, where thousands of aliens have their homes,
have not been included; but it is believed that
appreciable progress will be noted there also. The prevalence; of illiteracy in the United States became glaringly apparent when the na
tion called its men to the military service. The
number of soldier? who could not read and write, or were so poorly schooled that they were only a few degrees removed from the state of illiteracy,
was so alarmingly large that the military authori
ties had to establish schools in the cantonments. Since then, determined efforts have been made everywhere in the United States to elevate the scholastic attainments of all citizens to the point where.they at least can read and write. If the final returns of the census bureau on this point substantiate the early indication, the campaign has hot been waged in vain. Both the federal and state governments have popularized ' education in the last decade in a marked manner. The scope of this work goes far beyond mere reading and writing. It seeks to acquaint our citizens with the history of our country and with scores of topics that have both cultural and vocational value. The home reading courses of the federal
bureau of education, for instance, recently pub
increasingly necessary whether one is directly engaged in any line of business or not. Without it, intelligent merchandising is impossible." Twenty-nine books are listed in the series. The man who wishes to become acquainted with this phase of commerce has the whole topic covered
in a list, which probably would not be available
elsewhere. '..'
The work of the extension divisions of our state universities is commendable in the manner in which it gives interested persons an opportunity to broaden their education.. The latest report of the Indiana university extension division shows that 456 package libraries were mailed to clients, 66 requests for assistance in preparing club programs were filled, 17 lists of reference were sent out, and 13 inquiries were referred elsewhere for answer. No one justly can say he has no opportunity to acquire schooling in the United States. Abundant chances are at hand, and all that an enterprising person has to do is to avail himself of' the courses. The satisfactory increase in vocational studies, as well as the establishment of night schools, permits the training of hand and mind. Every advance in the popularization of education by the state and federal governments uplifts the intellectual status of our citizenship and makes it more efficient in the discharge of its vocational and political duties. The money spent for this purpose is a wise investment which will bring dividends in better citizenship as well as in the increase of the national wealth.

More Business in Government The passage of a bill by the senate incorporating a budget system for the federal government lays the foundation for a reform which will contribute toward reducing the cost of operating the government. A similar bill is pending in the house. Discrepancies between the views of the senators and representatives can be reconciled in conference after the house has adopted the measure. The representatives favor the measure, so that ulti-

It will be the first time in our national history that a budget system will regulate federal expenditures. The new measure will not curb all extravagance and waste, but it will at least

JUST ONE THING
I recently read a most interesting interview with Henry Ford. He said many wise and sensible things, but this is the one which took deepest root in my .mind: "If any man will take any single line and develop it to its fullest possibilities, he will find that it will lead him into all the businesses there are.'" The other night I was walking down the street of a great city and stopped to look into the windows of showrooms where various automobiles were shown. I saw some wonderful machines, many costing into the thousands of dollars. Finally I came to the place where the car was displayed that this same Henry Ford invented and made world famous. And this is what I said to myself: "It is the cheapest car of them all in price but the man who sells it could buy them all out and then have enough left to make Wall Street wake up in the night if he wanted to!" But Mr. Ford had no idea of becoming a Money King. He set out at the start to make ONE THING as standard and useful a3 possible and then to make it as UNIVERSAL, as possible. And there is no one to say that he has not succeeded. I a"m told that this man Ford is rarely ever found long in one place. He is always thinking, moving and experimenting. Recently he dismantled a great building just so that he might use it as an experimental shop. Ford doesn't like waste and he gets impatient in the midst of unnecessary things. He says that the day is coming when, instead of building the great heavy engines that we do, they will be only half as large and be made to do twice the work they now do. At any rate, America is a full century happier and more soundly equipped because two such men as Henry Ford and Thomas Edison have lived. And isn't it strange that the two are probably the world's best examples of concentrating on ONE THING until it is done better than it has ever been done before! I have noticed many times that the men of one BIG idea are the greatest appreciators of ALL ideas.

To Put On Firm 'Stay-There' Flesh Thin folks will find this simple test well worth trying: First weigh yourself and measure yourself; then take VITAMON, two tablets with
every meal. Then weigh ana measure again each week and continue taking Vitamon regularly until you are satisfied with your gain in weight and energy. VITAMON contains those wonderful health-giving substances of Nature the vitamines which Science says you must have to be strong, well and fully developed. By increasing the nourishing power of what you eat, "VITAMON supplies just what your body needs to feed the shrunken tissues, strengthen the internal organs and renew shattered nerve force. It is not only a question of how you look and feel the scales and tape measure tell their own story.
This test will surprise you. Remember that there is NO SUBSTITUTE for vitamines just as there is no substitute for fresh air, fresh water or sunlight. IMPORTANT While the amazing health-value of VITAMON has been clearly and positively demonstrated in cases of lack of energy, nervous troubles, anaemia, constipation, skin-eruptions, poor complexion and a generally weakened physical and mental condition, it should not be used by anyone who objects to having their weight Increased to normal. Thistlethwaite's, Dafler's, Quigleys and all other good druggists have VITAMON in stock. - .
