GLOVER IN WAYNE COMPARATIVELY FREE FROM WEEVIL, CLAIM Although Henry county reports a heavy damage in some localities from the clover weevil, Wayne county as a hole seems to "bo comparatively free, according to examinations made Friday. Those Inspections were made after it was learned that several hundred acres of clover in Henry county
are reported to have been ruined by this pest, according to Ralph Test, county agent Many fields were so badly infested that it was necessary to advise that they be plowed up. In one clover plant, 23 worms were found at work. The report of damage is substantiated by E. D. Turner, county agent or Preble County, O., who states that lie has discovered some cases of infestation, and has in his office samples or seed damaged by the weevil. At only two points in Wayne county was weevil damage reported Friday, when examinations were made following discovery of the weevil in adjoining counties. They were in New Garden township, where William Wright reports a severe infestation, many worms being found on the plants, some plants already dead and others lurning brown. Charles Williams reports, that although no worms are observed, many plants are seen which have been eaten and damaged in the characteristic manner of the weevil. Other Clover Good Other parts of the country, however report the clover in nice shape, with no weevil or evidences of their presence, the only damage that is done being due to the freeze. Theodore Davis, of Green's Fork, and Wood Eliason, of Centerville. both state that clover in their neighborhoods is coming on nicely. Grafton Stewart, of Hagerstown. and W. D. Scott, of the Easthaven farm state that clover in those neighborhoods looks well and there is no knowledge of weevil damage. The weevil infestation seems to be confined to a few localities, according to information' so far available. In Henry county, Wayne township is the only community suffering material damage from the pest. Mild Winter, Cause The mild winter this year has caused the large destruction by the weevil, it is stated. The worms appear every year but because of the warm' weather this year, they came much earlier than usual, thus eating the young plants. Then, too, the cold weather often kills out the worms, so that they attack the hardy clover plants at a time when the clover is able to withstand the damage of the worms. The recent freezes, it is believed, killed some of the worms but they have been very bad in some scattered localities. The clover weevil is a small light green colored worm about a fourth of an inch in length. The worms are hatched from eggs and after eating the clover go into the cucoon state, after which they become beetles.

U.S. DESIRES (Continued from Page One.) tary of State Hughes is understood in authoritative quarters Here to have assured Ambassador Jusserand to this effect. Absolute confidence that "America
will do the right thing,", was expressed by newspapers here today. The Echo de Paris summed up this unanimous view by saying: "Panic stricken because .of tne penalties the effect of which they understand, the Germans seek shelter behind American mediation. ' That is their last card and after President Harding's plain words regarding the right of France to full re
paration for damage, the chances of German success appear so feeble that to play it thus the German government must see the game is pretty well up."
