ATHLETIC LEADERS SEEK TO ORGANIZE CLUB FOR RICHMOND

Efforts to organize an athletic club in Richmond to promote independent athletic events and help develop strong athletic teams in several branches of sport to represent this city over the state, are being made by a number of young men of the city, according to announcements Thursday afternoon. The opening of the spring baseball season has brought this matter to a head and a meeting of the interested parties is expected to be called within the next few days to see what the j general opinion of sport enthusiasts of the city is regarding an athletic organization. Leaders in the move recognize that the beginning of the club necessarily would be on a small scale, but have hopes that a few years of organization would enable the local organization circles. In Interest Athletes. The plans of the club have not been definitely stated, but it is saM tna will have few restriction, the idea being to get the young men of the cit interested in an organization that caji form, finance and carry on a success ful sporting event or team. Temnis enthusiasts of the city long bave been interested in getting an organization of some kind to promote this sport, baseball fans have little place to exert their energies at tho present, basket-ball has spread out in this community to such an extent that there are a large number of independent clubs. but no central one to be representative of the whole city, all these should be moulded together to get the best possible aggregation to represent the city, according to several sporting men of the city. The meeting which probably will be held next week is expected to be attended largely by young men of the city who are interested in athletics in general and any particular sport. The first meeting will be for the pur pose of sounding out the prospects and the success of the proposed club will depend largely upon the amount of interest that is manifested at the first meeting. Some of those interested in th movement are Ed. Wilson, Frank Hoi land. Lewis Ripberger, Edgar Loehr and Cornell Hewson. INDIANA FARM HEAD i STEERING NEW LAWS i ! WASHINGTON'. D. C. April 14. TEXAS TORNADO BRINGS DISASTER

McKlNNEY. Texas.. April 14 Eight persons were killed and 35 others were injured, five probably fatally, when a tornado swept down from the west on Melissa, near here Wednesday. Fire followed in the debris of th buildings razed by the twister, and virtually the entire business district, except the bank and the east ride of the town, was destroyed. The tornado unroofed the $30,000 school building in which about 240 children were at classes, also caving in the east walls, but due to the foresight of the principal and teachers, who, when they saw the tornado approaching, marshalled their charges into the basement, no child was hurt. The funnel-shaped cloud originated " near Franklin, six miles west of Melissa, swept eastward, destroying , farm buildings along the way at Boland and Chambersville, then missed

the west side of Melissa only to sweep
