NORWEGIAN ENGINEER PERFECTS WIRELESS PICTURE TRANSFER - - - r ' (By Associated Press) OHKISTIANIA, Norway. April 5.-r-Herwood Peterson, a chief engineer in the government telegraph, service, has invented a wire' and cable system by ' which it' is possible to transfer a picture or- a message' in original handwriting over a practically unlimited distance. The device was recently publicly tested here between two 600-mile loints and was reported successful. Contrary to the present telegraph system, Mr. Peterson used an alternating electric current, allowing a strictly synchronous work of the sending and the receiving apparatus, a higher speed and an enormous saving of operating
costs. The system, it is claimed, alsoj makes it possible to transmit double J the number of words compared with any other telegraphic system now used and. it-operates automatically from the moment the telegram, picture or drawing vis received by tne operator until it U received at the place of delivery. ' N new wires, or cables are necessary The manuscript to be transferred is placed . on a metallic cylinder somewhat resembling . an original wax cylinder ftomewtiat resembling an original wax phonograph cylinder covered with a photographic film and exposed to a strong arc light- The manuscript is 6opied on the cylinder i film, developed and ohromagraphscaiiy etched into the metal. The cylinder is then placed on the sending apparatus to' which is transmitted an electric current going to the receiving apparatus. When the cylinder, rotates a iraeflle moves on it, touching every point on the clyinder. Whenever it touches the copied leters of tlie manuscript it causes a short circuit which is. transmitted to the receiving appar atus with its photographic paper, wliich the copy is reproduced. on BRITISH FOOD BOARD BRINGS PRICES DOWN ' (Bv- Associated Press ONDON. April 5. The operation! of the British food ministry during and since the war involved a turnover ot more than 1.000,000,000 and the ministry's net profit on it amounted to less than one-tenth of one per cent. These facts are announced by Food Controller McCnrdy in a valedictory address recently, in which he said that for the last six months he had been engaged in liquidating this, as he described it the "world's greatest trade corporation." Mr. McCurdy said that the ministry s operation had cost the taxpayers nothing and the successive food ministers had substantially avoided making a profit at the expense of the consumer. -The controller said that it had beihle to wind up the affairs n the- fond ministerv because of the wlcr.me break in the world's prices of ! food. In removing control and restoring freedom to the people, he said, he had every evidence that food prices would continue to fall in Great Britain during the coming spring and summer. Ohio News Flashes COLUMBUS. Senator James Barr, o Guernsey,. Monday announced that Governor Harry L. Davis would suspend Mayor J. J. Calvert of Cambridge, who has been absent from his post since his subordinate, in the mayor's presence, shot a resident of Cambridge. CLEVELAND. Offers by the officials of the street carmen's union to accept the wage reductions of three, five and nnaliy six cents an nour tor the 3,400 conductors and motormen at the expiration of the present wage agreement, May 1, were flatly rejected by J.' J." Stanley, president of the Cleveland Railway company. YOUNGSTOWN. Adolph Click, in- . dieted , jointly with Moe Baron, ot Brooklyn, for the alleged attempts to bribe Safety Director Scott to allow whisky to be brought into Youngstown, pleaded guilty Monday in common pleas court here. Scott is said to have set a trap for Glick after the latter had first approached him and had witnesses present. It is alleged Glick paid $2,500 as the first installment of a $50,000 bribe.
