Earlham debating teams triumphed in encounters against Indiana university and Franklin college Friday night in the third triangle of the Indiana Intercollegiate Debating league. The Earlham affirmative team of Tietz. Swain and Harvey gained a 4-1 decision over Indiana at Franklin and the negative, team was made up of Snyder, Hinshaw and Thompson, won from the Franklin affirmative trio 3-2 at Bloomington. Reports from Franklin indicate that the Earlham affirmative arguers had the edge on the Indiana men. Miller, Armstrong and Ashley, both in delivery and argumentation. ' This Earlham team is especially strong in rebuttal and was able to meet effectively all arguments of the opposition in addition to presenting specific constructive
debate for the government ownership and operation of the coal mines. The constructive speeches of the Earlham men showed a clear understanding of the subject, the work of all three being equally good in his department, while Tieta and Swain are two of the most capable rebuttal speakers that have represented Earlham for some time. These two victories give Earlham 11 of a possible 20 points in the league standing which places her well up in the list. Wabash - negative team defeated Manchester affirmative 4-1 at Notre Dame. Advocating government ownership of the coal mines as a solution to the coal problem, Indiana university defeated Franklin in the debate Friday evening in the Earlham chapel. The victory of the affirmative team was decisive, the judges' vote being 4-1. The team was composed of A. L. Miller, A. Fl. VanCleve and L. A. Tolle. The Franklin team consisted of Howard F. Meyers. Jennings Sanders and W. Davis Harrison. - New chapel hours are forenfost in importance among the changes for next year that will appear in the 1920MOTHER!
