LENGTHY CHARLOTTE
CONQUERS RICHMOND
! Charlotte Greenwood, - 'Letty in s 'Oliver Morosco's .musical comedy, "Linger Longer, Letty, -which played at the Washington theatre Thursday night, will always be welcomed hack to Richmond. This is not an immature decision, but comes alter seeing the young comedienne in action. Let's also hone that if she does return, she brings along her pal and "side-kick," Jim. played by Robert Hlggins. Perhaps she did not use her lankiness to such advantage as in her former success, "So Long, Letty," yet she had ample opportunity to convince the skeptical that her unusual length of arm and limb were factors about which much comedy could be centered. Throughout the first act and a portion of the second. Miss Greenwood represents "The Ugly Duckling," so to speak. When, however,, the continuity of action demands that she appear' in her attractive and costly garments, she has no peer. Briefly, the plot revolves about the dependence of an entire family upon the efforts of sister Letty, who is the kitchen drudge and "goat" of the house.' Her sisters roam about the
house ' as ornaments, while Letty, cheaply and ridiculously attired, is the hub of the family wheel. It is as hard for her to find a fellow to care for her as it is for Jim, care-free blustering sailor, to find a girl to admire his frame. When Letty "strikes" against further kitchen duty, and sets
loot to become a "ldy," th?n things happen.
Billy Registers a Hit. Little Billy, a talented boy about six years old, caps anything Richmond has seen in the way of juvenile performers. He has a clear enunciation in speaking and singing,-and can equal many of mature years in dancing. While we have said we hope Charlotte Greenwood will return to this city some day, we must also confess it is hardly likely, as we are told that her engagement here was due accidentally to an open date during the Lenten treason. The company - that played here was the same as appears in the largest cities of the United States. It was a rare treat. Contrary to many musical comedies local people see presented in Richmond, the "Linger Longer, Letty," production is composed of principals that are recognized theatrical stars. Some of the scenes, especially that accompanying the singing of the "Ladder of Love," are most beautiful. An outburst of applause greeted the scene. Costumes worn by the chorus, as well as by the leads, were as though they had been donned for the first time. "Linger Longer, Letty," came, and conquered. c Marvin.
