PAGE THIRTEEN RECORD TRACK YEAR IS SLOGAN ADOPTED BY EARLHAM TUESDAY

THE RICHMOND PALLADIUM AND SUN-TELEGRAM. RICHMOND, IND- WEDNESDAY, MAR. 9, 1921.

P

"The biggest track season in th history of Earlham" was the slogan adopted at the meeting of all track men under the direction of Ccach Ray B. Mowe which was held at the college Tuesday night According to a statement made by Mowe at the meeting there will probably be no intercollegiate baseball played at Earlham this year, although taeeball will be offered aa usual for those interested and contests will be scheduled with Richmond teams. The final word in the abolishment of the intercollegiate baseball will be left to the students but as set forth by Mowe in hl3 talk it is Impractical and there is little doubt that, for this year at least, no visiting teams will be brought here. Some of the reasons giren by Mowe were; that baseball was not a paying proposition as far as the receipts were concerned, that it was almost impossible to arrange a satisfactory schedule; and that cince about 15 men are carried on every trip away there is always a loss on every game away from home. Improvements for Reid Field. According to Mowe in ,hls talk to the track men the money lost every year in baseball could be profitably spent on Reid Field in much needed improvements to the track. Extensive improvements are planned this year for the cinder quarter mile oval, according to Mowe. A cement curb will be placed around the inside of the track to" provide a better drainage system and . so that there will be a . definite pole for the runners. Heretofore the inside boundary of the track has always been indefinite because there was no' way of marking it. " After the new curb has been provided it la planned to recinder the track. This is a much needed Improve'ment, as in some places the cinders are practically a minus quantity and the hard clay is a menace to the runners. Other improvements are being considered by the authorities, which will, when completed, make ' Reid Field one of the best of its size in the state. Most of the work on the track will be done during the spring vacation. Work on the field will be completed ln time for the Indiana meet here, April 16, arid it la expected that special preparations will be made for the contest in order that the season will start off with a rush. It Is thought that by improving the track and providing some of .the best competition in the state more interest can be created in track athletics than ever before. Will Schedule Local Teams. Those at the college who prefer baseball as an activity rather than track will be encouraged to pursue their favorite sport. Games will be scheduled with Richmond factory teams, although no attempt will be made to make any trips. About 45 men answered the call for track Tuesday night. This is above the average number for the first appearance and Coaches Mowe and Higgins were well pleased with the turnout. With a veteran squad to work with and much promising material, the leaders declare that the chances for a successful season are bright.
