PRESIDENT HARDING PR HIS CAREER IN (By Associated Press) WASHINGTON, March 4. Whatever else he; may be, Warren (1. Harding always j classifies, himself as an editor.. publisher and printer, proud of hjs professional accomplishments and training. - Ilia luck-charm and most eacrea possession is a pnnwi ( carried in his pocitet vnerever- ire, foes; and his close- friends say he would rather set a'stick of type any .day than grant an audience to an ambassadoh For more than thirty years Mr. Harding's bread and butter has been earned by the Marion Star, whose responsibilities he assumed under heavy mortgage and whose early years he nourished at the expense of going hungry more than once himself. Since his nomination for the presidency he Las faced only one public ordeal that aroused emotions he could not master. That was the temporary severance of the ties that bind him to the Star. On election night, when a group of his employes came to congratulate him. his voice broke and his big frame was fchaken by sobs when he undertook to speak of the separation that .must be the price of his triumph. Born in Ohio. Election day was Mr. Harding's 35th birthday, and alt the interests of his lifetime had been rooted in the immediate vicinity of Marion. He was born at Bloominsr Grove, O., in an adJoining county, the son of a country doctor. George T. Harding, who still visits his patients about Marion in the one-horse carriage ot the old school practioner. The new president's mother has been dead for many years and his father is remarried. Young Harding attended college at Iberia, O., and then tried school teaching for a year before he began his newspaper career. Always a partisan and a Republican, he lost his job as a reporter by wearing in the presence of his Democratic editor as "Blaine hat." the stove-pipe, which was a badge of support of James G Blaine. Three times before he has held public office. He served in the Obio legislature and as lieutenant governor of the state, and six years ago he was elected to the United States senate, where he became a member of the foreign relations committee. In 1916 he "was chairman of the Republican national convention. Has Commanding Appearance. In personal appearance the new -president is a man to attract a second

look fn any crowd.' He carries his two hundred and ten pounds without a hint of obesity, although he is not quite six feet tall: and his massive features round out an Impression of force and distinction. His hair is iron grey al-1 most silver grey making sharp contrast; with the unusually heavy black eyebrows thai almost mask a pair of calm grey eyes. It is only in repose that his face takes on the aspect of severity seen so often In his 'photographs. When he talks or listens the lines are' broken by : a ; smile ' that radiates cordiality. . '? . President Harding walks slowly, talks slowly, and makes , np his mind slowly; but he gives the impression of j Dolished deliberation rather than oft of over-caution or abashment. He is a j good conversationalist and a good i listener, and has a faculty of getting through embarrassing situations with little show of embarrassment. The new president is unusually fond of children, though he has none of his cwn. He is a life-loDg Baptist and a trustee of his home church in Marion. He has been a member of the Elk and Moose fraternities for years, and since his election to the presidency has become a thirty-second degree Mason and a Shriner. - Golf is his favorite recreation and he likes to fish but does not hunt. He plays hard, and possesses the faculty of putting all his worries out of his mind during vacation hours. HARVEY MAY (Continued from Page One.) fact that Henry Cabot Lodge, now chairman of the senate foreign affairs committee, was also once editor of the same periodical. Another factor that has had weight with Mr. Harding is the fact that throughout Col. Harvey's presidency of the publishing firm of Harper and Brothers, and otherwise for a period of 27 years, he has made annual visits to London and has an unsurpassed acquaintance with. British men of letters and statesmen. The important hand that Col. Harvey will have in formulating whatever i3 to be the substitute for the league of nations will not be agreeable to those who were the friends of that issue in the recent campaign. Col. Harvey, however, is well known to be close to Senator Root, and it can be taken for granted rxM
