INDIANA MAN DOUBTS SUCCESS OF ALPINE CLIMBERS EXPEDITION (By Associated Press) GENEVA, March 2. The ascent of Mb Everest which is to be undertaken next year by an expedition headed by Sir Francis Younghusband, is inpracticable for many years at least, in the opinion of Henry F. Montagnier, of Terre Haute, lnd., a well-known mountain climber. Mr. Montagnier has made many ascents in the Himalaya, the Rockies and the European Alps, Td has attained the highest altitudes. Hp is now at Cbampery, Switzerland. His opinion of the difficulty of ascending the highest peak in the orld is shared by some other international expert Alpine climbers but there are others among them who disagree with him. Task Will Take Years. "I should have no hesitation in. predicting that Everest will certainly not be conquered by the first party that makes the attempt,' said Mr. Montagnier. "In my opinion it will take years, each party profiting by the experience aceyired by its predecessors and each gaining a thousand or more feet on the previous record. One thing is certain, and that is that the conquest of the highest peak in the world will be far in the way the most terrific test of endurance human beings have ever undergone. The Journey to the north or south poles, as far as physical effort and moral courage are concerned, would be mere child's play compared with the ascent of a mountain more than 29,000 feet high. "Whether it is possible for man to attain an altitude of 29,140 feet on the earth's surface without the aid of an airplane is a question which, to my mind, can only be solved by actual experience. The highest altitude yet attained is about 24,800 feet. "We know that the number of feet an active climber can ascend per hour diminishes rapidly with the altitude. Thus up to 16,000 feet an average climber can ascend about 1,000 feet an hour over easy ground without exhausting himself. Above 23,000 feet the ascensional rate falls below 300 feet an hour even for exceptionally strong climbers. What it would be at 27,000 feet no one can say without experience.

ARGENTINA PROTESTS EMERGENCY TARIFF

(By Associated Press) BUENOS AIRES, March 2. Argentina cannot continue to buy United States ceases to be a customer of Argentina, "as must happen case the Fordney emergency tariff bill becomes operative," says LaRazon in speculating on the possibility that President Wilson will veto the measure. The newspaper points out that the United States has become the largest customer of, as well as purveyor to, Argentina, but asserts "this trade must largely be abandoned under the r.ow law." "Argentina is being forced to buy

in countries from which come pay-! ments for its products," it continues, "or where it can exchange product for! product or raw materials for manufactured goods." !

Mrs. J. William Souther, nee Miss Georgette Cohan. The mornintr before her engagement was to nave been announced at a party. Georgette Cohan, daughter of George M. Cohan, the actor, and his former wife, now Mrs. Claude Graham-White, slipped away from Palm Beach and was married by a justice of the peac to J. William Souther.

GERMAN NAVAL HEAD FAVORS AIRPLANE TO ZEPPELIN IN WAR USE (By Associated Press) SAINT BLAJSEN, Baden, March 2. Admiral Alfred Von Tirpitz, German naval authority, in an interview recently, gave his views on the Influence of aircraft upon future wars. He discounted the Zeppelin airship as too much subject to wind and too vulnerable for ordinary reconnoiterlng. The airplane, in his opinion, has a much greater future as it has an economic "importance for traffic which will tend to perfect it for war purposes. While the airplane has taken a high place in land fighting as a substitute for cavalry, Admiral Von Tirpitz said it had not developed its usefulness to the same degree in sea reconnoitering, but that was probably due to the newness of the airplane, which waterplanes of the future must conceivably overcome. Reserves Opinion. The admiral reserved his opinion on the possibility of effective attacks by airplanes upon battleships, but clearly showed that he doubts that airplanes will become a great menace to the warships, as, he pointed out, the latter will develop devices for defense, while

heavily loaded airplanes will always i

be in danger of attack from lighter machines. "In comparison with ships," he said, "airplanes will always have a fundamental disadvantage in their small loading capacity, especially when they are to be us-ed on a wide expanse of ocean. From a study of the history, of naval warfare, the greatest exponent of which was an American, I am persuaded that the nature of naval forces will not change with a jerk, but will develop organically, for development takes some time which only in imagination and fanci.es can be skipped. In this respect, the late war has not effected any fundamental alteration, although, of course, the rate of technical revelopment is much faster than formerly."

Successful Operation Performed on Caruso (By Associated Press NEW YORK. March 2. Enrico Caruso, who underwent a third operation yesterday for a small abscess in the pleural cavity, was reported to be resting comfortably this morning. He slept well during the night and apparently suffered no ill effects from the operation, physicians said. The operation was performed in an effort to remove the cause of a high fever, which Caruso has endured since he fought off a serious relapse two weeks ago.
