The Girl Who Had No Chance . By MARION RUBINCAM

Chapter 2 i A CURIOUS INCIDENT The great day dawned giving iromtse to be the ideal sort of day for t.n out-of-door commencement. As there was to be a luncheon party before the "exercises." Ruth had been asked to the. Weed's for the whole day, to dress there and Flay until everyone departed for the dance in the evening. So the two girls sat in Myra's room , about noon, chatting as fast as their tongues could go, while from below came the sound of voices and the clatter of dishes, and from the kitchen ascended the most enticing odors. But the two girls, center of this excitement and feastivity, were quite alone in the room and dressed for the luncheon and the afternoon ceremony. AVith the true generosity of the small town and the country, Ruth's mother . and father had been asked over for the day, too; 'Ruth could hear her mother's deep, rich voice from the lawn where tte was helping entertain the guests, jhile Myra's mother was doubtless

vithln overseeing the practical end of the festivity. "I wish it would curl," Ruth sighed, regretfully, peering into a mirror and t rushing vigorously over the smooth silkiness of her brown hair. "Yes, it is handy," Myra from the largest mirror, glanced over her should der at her chum. She threw back the wavy mass of gold hair and with a dexterous twist, rolled up the fluffy ends and piled the whole high on her head. "Ruth," she. confided, importantly, a minute later, "look here. I've face powder. . Cousin Emily sent it from New York, as a present." With due respect for the ceremony the two girls carefully powdered their faces a bit of "grown-up" vanity that neither had before indulged in Myra for lack of permission, Ruth for lack of funds. But today was a fete day! And Myra slipped into the frock of elaborate lace and embroidery that her mother had made for her and the petticoat of delicate white satin and lace, rose-bud trimmed, that was made to go under It. She added high-heeled kid shoes and white silk stockings, and stood off to look at herself satisfied. And Ruth was too busy admiring her chum to think much about herself. Her frock was home jnade, dainty enough with its fresh white batiste run with fine tucks, but simple to the point of plainness. Her slippers were can

and practically force Tim to ask her and she knew that when some convenient opportunity offered, Tim would ask Ruth to go with him. In fact, she bad telephoned before this convenient opportunity presented itself. So Tim had said nothing. But that Ruth worried about it was obvious to anyone. And finally Myra telephoned Tim again. "I'm awfully sorry," she said, trying to make her voice sound truthful, "But I promised someone else to go to the dance a long time ago, and I forgot

all about it Honest, Tim, I'd rather go with you " Herv voice .did ring sincerely that time. "It's all right, don't worry," Tim had assured her. Evidently lie . had taken immediate use of his release to ask Ruth for here it was all arranged. Meantime, Myra had no partner, and she was

feeling like a virtuous

"Who are you going with?" Ruth asked. And when Myra said MNo one," the answered at once: "Oh, then, you mutt go with Tim and me." And Myra felt a little ,shaine at her own recent selfishness. Tomorrow Their Plans.

As a general thing olive oil does promote the growth of hair, so I never advise it as a ma&sage in any case where there is a decided tendency towards hair on the face. Your skin seems to need nothing more than a daily stimulating treatment. This you can give it by using hot water, the Blackhead Cleansing Powder for the large pores, a cold cream massage to overcome, the dryness of the skin, and last of all, a massage with a piece of ice. This is the best astringent you can use. Discouraged Why do you put cream and powder on your face before you go out. when the cream only comes out and makes the skin look worse ihan it was before? Cold cream should be cleansing or nourishing. It should never be used to fill up the skin as a base for powder. If you will get your complexion in healthy condition it will look well without cream, and the powder will stay on of itself. Use the Blackhead Cleansing Powder for the large pores around the nose. This is made as follows: Blackhead Cleansing Powder Corn or Wheat Starch, 2 oz. Powdered Borax, 1 oz. "i Almond Meal. 2 oz. Wash the face with hot water, rub in

buy clothes means misery In most cases. Doubtless your husband is of a disposition to be pleasant only when conditions are favorable and he is not pressed in any way.. I never like to advjse separation. It seems to me it would be better for you to remain with your husband and make a deeper study of your problem. Notice what seems to irritate him most, and also what pleases him. Do not talk about your ill health. Most men are patient for a certain length of time, but then they grow tired of sympathizing. They want things done

and will not accept excuses on the grounds of poor health. -. - If you try to be tactful, keep your troubles to yourself, and work as hard in your own home as your strength will permit, you will probably notice a change in your husband's attitude. , You certainly have my deepest sympathy. "Did Tim Turner call you up?" Myra asked, after a silence during which she had sat idly staring at her own gray eyes in the glass. "Yes, yesterday," Ruth answered, adJusting a sash. "He asked me to go with him to the dance tonight. Of course, I did wonder he was so long ibout it." Myra said nothing. Her checks flushed a little and they were already pink from excitement. She said nothing. But she remembered back, when she had telephoned Tim at his office. She had asked, casually, whether he was

on how to reduce the bust I have frequently received from my readers letters saying that the bust could be reduced by massaging with spirits of camphor. Spirits of camphor is drying and it is harmless because it is frequently used by mothers who are weaning children to dry up the milk. It seem? to do not only that but to dry up the bust as well. I give this not as my own suggestion, but as a suggestion from one reader to another. Betty Jane Massaging the face with cold cream will not do it any harm if the cream is pure and good.
