PRISONERS III RUSSIA,

UNUtK SUVItl KULti WELCOME SENTENCE

(By Associated Press BERLIN, Feb. 18. Prisoners in' the jails of Soviet Russia, when condemned to death, are called out to be fchot by soldiers who stalk into the sella after midnight, declares M. Schwariz, of San Francisco, the socialist, who went to Moscow to attend a congress of the Third Internationale and was imprisoned there for four months. Tall and gaunt, his black hair and beard heavily streaked with grey, the American, who had been a Bolshevik I'efore a visit to Russia "saddened and enlightened" him, described in a supplemental statement, the cold fear and tremblinar, in which Soviet prisoners' wait for the visits in the dead of night. Come in Early Morning.

"They always come between the

hours of one and two o'clock," he said. "A Bolshevist soldier walks into the crowded cell and In the instant feilence calls out the names of the men, or women, who must die. In the jail here I was, they marched the prisoners down a stairway and into a courtyard. We could hear the volleys of the firing squads. Many men were called out for execution from my cell during those four months. Few of them knew why they had been condemned, but generally it was understood they were 'counter-revolutionaries. They were shot without trial." After a time the prisoners became Inured to these visits and, in the filth and monotony of prison life, ceased to oare whether their names were railed or not. Mr. Schwartz said. .Cheery greetings were often passed as the condemned men were marched out. The men about to die would say A their goodbyes, wave their cell comyrades a so-long, and those remaining would cry out: y "Good-by. See you later." Tells of Hardships. Throughout the first few nights, however, Mr. Schwartz said he trembled as with ague, and his clothes, even to his overcoat, were wet with

perspiration. Other prisoners, some of whom had been in the jail for more than a year, took the matter cynically and told him with apparent relish the horrors through which they had gone. When at last the summons came to Schwartz to leave the cell he said he was certain he was going to the place of execution. But they led him upstairs instead of down. He was taken before anofflcial named Feldman, in whose hands was the power of life and death over all the prisoners in his charge. This man said he had reviewed Schwartz' case and the American was free to go.

WASHINGTON. "That Cutey Chorus of Sixteen Sweet Sixteens" is the way Raymond Hitchcock describes the young ladies who furnish the dazzling background for the various ensenible numbers in the second edition of Hitchy-Koo, the musical comedy revue which is to be seen at the Washington theatre,. Feb. 21. Mr. Hitchcock is of the opinion that exact figures are what the public which supports the theatre, has a right to demand. "And so, of course, well stick to the figures," said Hitchcock one day recently. "But let not the gallant press agent fail to go a step further than

mere, cold, mathematical figures. Let him tell the world in words of flame the rest of the truth what "figures they are." However this may be, all the advance reports point to the new edition of Hitchy-Koo being greeted by an absolutely capacity audience when it plays here, and not all of the big crowd will be there merely because the new "Hitchy-Koo" ran two years in New York. One or two anyway will be on hand in their capacity as expert calculators of figures. MURRAY.

It is not many months since Shirley Mason, in "Her Elephant Man," made her debut as a William Fox star, yet already she has several really big successes to her credit. The latest is "Flame of Youth," a production of high, merit that opened an engagement at the Murray theatre last night. Miss "Mason's success is due primarily, of course, to her pleasing personality and her cleverness as an actress ; but a large share of credit is due to William Fox for giving her roles that enable her to display adequately her fine talents. "Flame of Youth," even more than "Her Elephant Man," and

the rest of them, gives her opportunity "to be herself." She plays the part of a little Belgian peasant girl who falls in love with a famous artist. Little Bebee runs the gamut of faith, hope, false love and disillusionment before the true love comes; and the part calls for great versatility. Yet there Is more than . the charm of Shirley Mason in "Flame of Youth.' It is a dramatic, moving story, ably directed by Howard M. Mitchell, who has made many successful Fox films. There is great fidelity to detail in the scenes In the Belgian village and in the Paris studio. The picture deserves to rank among the great film romances. MURRETTE "Number 17," Louis Tracy's popular novel of love and mystery in New

York, has been produced by William Fox as a motion picture, with George Walsh as the star. It will open an engagement at the Murrette theatre Friday. ; The many thousands who have read the book have little need to be told how exciting it is and what excellent,

picture material it contains. It is the story of a man "who, threatened by terrible danger to himself, and to those he loves most dearly, fights singlehanded a battle of wits with a gang of criminals. Supporting Mr. Walsh is a very strong cast, including Mildred Reardon as leading woman, Charles Mussette, Lillian Beck, Louis R. Wolheim,
