GREENVILLE COUNCIL ORDERS SIDEWALKS, STREET ALTERATIONS GREENVILLE, Feb. 17.Greenville city council met in regular session recently, with all members present. After the reading of the minutes and the report of Mayor Wright, Prosecutor Hoel asked that some action be taken about two nuisances on West Main street. These were the parking of auto trucks in front of a residence, and the use of the side walks and street as an auto repair shop. The Director of Public Service was instructed to abate these nuisances at once. Residents of, . North Spring ftreet asked that sidewalks be constructed on that street front Park Avenue to North Main street, and the proper committee reported favorably on the Improvement, which will be made as soon, as weather conditions permit and the snvreys can be made. WASHINGTON The biggest crowd that has turned out tor a road attraction is expected at the Washington, Feb. 21 when Raymond Hitchcock presents the new second edition of Hitcby-Koo, the famous musical comedy revue that comes direct from a run of two solid vears in New York, with the original production, scenery and costumes. It la the purpose of Raymond Hitchcock to make this organization, which will be seen here, a permanent institution, like Ziegfeld Follies, and to make unusual tours of the smaller cities of the country, exactly as "The Follies" organization visit and- revisit a handful of the bigger cities year after year. "Hitchy-Koo" itself has come to be a permanent institution in New "York and Chicago, and there is no question that each, season will see a new vertion of this frankly admitted hodge podge of fun, music and girls. This city gets very few attractions musical or otherwise, that can boast even a single years run in New York, but in the case of "Hitchy-Koo" it lasted, in Gotham not only two whole years,' but packed audiences into three different theatres before Manhattanites would allow it to start on tour. MURRAY A whimsical tidbit of what Is known in motion picture parlance as "atmosphere" occurred juite through accident during the filming of "Flame of Youth," the William Fox production starring Shirley Mason,, which opens at the Murray Theatre Thursday. It
i came about because the property man
failed to place on the set a basket in which the star. In her childish role of a Belgian peasant girl, was supposed to put her pet rabbit to bed. The camera was grinding and the scene had been going on in so satisfactory a manner that an interruption would have spoiled it. When the time came for Miss Mason to walk over to the side of her bed and place "bunny" for the night she perceived that the basket was missing. Like a flash came a suggestion. She stopped down and tucked the rabbit in her wooden shoe, where it remained comfortably until the scene was ended. The effect
! is acknowledged to be far more ap
pealing than the original action would have been. "Flame of Youth," under the direction of Howard M. Mitchell, is said to tell a captivating story of Belgian life in which Miss Mason as Bebee, an orphan girl, is subjecled to the wiles
of an unscrupulous artist from Paris the effect ot which is to change her whole life. ' . a MURRETTE Several, army celebrities bad the experience of yachting on dry land during the taking of "Her First Elopement," the new Wanda Hawley comedy-drama which Manager Holland is presenting at the Murrette Theatre, Miss Hawley was taking yacht cabin scenes on the Realart stage when the party arrived. The set was mounted on rockers and rolled, under,
the' impetus of twelve men, precisely as would be the case far oat at sea. She invited the army men to join her on her "yacht." The distinguished visitors report getting real thrills and a few actual sea-sick qualms out of the experience. Included in the party were UL Col. C. D. F. Chandler, Chief of the Balloon and Airship Division of the United States Army; Major B. K. Yount, Commanding Officer, March Field, (Calif.) and Major H. H. Arnold, Air Service Officer, Western Department FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH . Moving picture patrons of this city are promised a rare treat when Clara Kimball Young and her own company present Miss Young's latest Select picture. "The Better Wife" at the First Presbyterian church on Friday night. "The Better Wife" is described -as an interesting and delightfully woven romance, introducing Miss Young as an American girl who is visiting friends in England. While she is there, she becomes acquainted with Sir Richard Beverly, Lady Beverly and their son, Little Dick. Lady Beverly is having an affair with another man, and one afternoon, when she is racing in her car to keep an appointment with him, the car overturns and she is killed. Little Dick, who was riding in the car with hit mother,, is seriously injured, and Charmian Page (played by Miss Young), takes an interest in him and tries to nurse him back to health. It is discovered, however, that an intricate surgical operation is necessary in order to effect a cure. Sir Richard is found to be in straitened circumstances and cannot afford the services of a specialist, but Charmian has her father undertake the matter without the Baronet's knowledge. Other circumstances tend to throw Charmian constantly in Sir Richard's path, but the sacred memory of his dead wife keeps him from speaking of his love. Later he is acquainted with the double life of the late Lady Beverly, and he is brought to the point where a single decision will change his life from one of unhappiness to one of happiness and love.
BRITISH SHIPYARDS INCREASE ACTIVITIES; U.S. OUTPUT LESS
LONDON. Feb. 17. All records for the construction of merchant vessels yre broken by the yards of Great Britain during 1920 when 615 vessels, of $255,624 tons, were completed. The total of 1919 was exceeded by 430,182 tons and the previous jecord figures of 1913 by 142,971 tons, says Lloyd's register of shipbuilding. - - On the other hand, the figures given for the 1920 output of United States yards 509 vessels of 2,476,253 tons, show a decrease of 1,599,133 tons com--pared with 1919, this decrease accounting for over 92 per cent of the total reduction in tonnage launched abroad during 1920. Note Decrease Abroad The report calls attention to the fact that in other countries a steady decrease took place during the whole of 1920 in the work in hand. At the beginning of the year the tonnage under construction amounted to 4,367,114 tons and at the end of December the total was 3.470,862 tons, or a decrease of 1,396,232, due to the enormous decrease in the shipbuilding industry in the United States. The world's output for 1920 was 1,759 vessels of 5,861,666 tons, against 2,483 vessels of 7,144,549 tons in 1919, and 1,750 vessels of 3,332,882 tons in 1913. A feature of the year has been the launching of 1.625,000 tons of vessels to be fitted with steam turbines, these figures representing one third of the total world's output of steel steam tonnage. The tonnage launched by Japan, Norway and Sweden during 1920 also shows a decrease, but the output of other countries increased in comparison to 1919.
