EXCAVATIONS SHOW PRESENCE OF OLD a INDIAN CIVILIZATION

(By Associated Press) SANTA FE, N. M., Feb. 11. When Europe was plunging through the terrors of the middle ages and along about the time Attilla, the Hun, was ravaging the civilization of Rome, another civilization of a different type was in a fajrly well perfected state in western North America. The center of this civilization as well as center of

trade and commerce was Pecos, New Mexico about 25 miles east of Santa Fe. This was determined definitely, according to Dr. A. V. Kidder, by excavations conducted by himself and assistants last summer. Dr. Kidder was aided by Dr. E. A. Hooton, a specialist in physical anthropology and Dr. Carl E. Guthe, who had just returned from his exploration among the Mayos in Central America. Examine Old Homes. The scientists opened more than 300 graves and examined some 1,000 skeletons. Homes had been built upon ruins of previous habitations and the bodies of the dead buried in the ruins had increased to such an extent that the Indians of Pecos, some 80 years ago, deserted their thousand year old city and moved to Jemez because the waters had become contaminated. Cliff dwellings of a thousand rooms, well preserved specimens of the past civilization and unusual examples of early day pottery and household utensils were recovered, according to the report on the excavations recently made public. Verify Old Chronicles. Castenada, the chronicler of Coronado's explorations 380 years ago, mentions but one pueblo at Pecos, obviously the north house. Excavations last summer showed that there had been a pueblo at an early period, on the site of the south house, which had been abandoned and reduced to a mere heap of ruins before the coming of the Spaniards. In the interior of the amount there was uncovered one ground floor chamber in excellent preservation. Its roof was almost intact: from the beams still hung the bark loops that had been used to suspend goods of the owners and on one smoke-blackened log are a series of handprints, large and small, slapped on in white wash. To explore the extensive north house which originally must have had more than a thousand rooms, and walls of which still stand almost three stories high, trenches were started simultaneously at the east entrance and the west edge of the mesa. The western tranch was run along bed rock and after passing through burials four feet deep, encountered the foundation walls of an early building, the presence of which bad not been suspected. This was cut through and the trench struck a large oval pit which proved to be a treasure house 15 feet deep, 10 feet wide and 20 feet long, built in a natural crevice in the mesa. About its edge was a neatly made coping wall two feet high. Cistern Contains Relics. The cistern yielded an unusually full and unmixed collection of artifacts and pottery from the earliest times to the Pajaritan or Fourth Glaze period. When the cistern was cleared it was bridged over and the trench was continued. Another zone of skeletons was discovered and some of the best pottery- thus far found was taken from the graves. In another trench ruins were encountered similar to those of the prehistoric walls of the palace of governors at Santa Fe, built long before the

coming of the Spaniards. The similarity was traced to the ruins upon which the Santa Fe structure had been constructed and which had been built by Ornate or his successor in 1608.

Jap Match Manufacturers Must Use New Labels (By Associated Press) WASHINGTON, Feb. 11. "TandBticksfabriks" or "sakerhets TandBtickor or similar word3 or symbols "suggestive of Swedish origin" are regarded by the federal trade commission as no proper marking for matches made in Japan to be sold in this country- After trial, the commission found that such symbols "have a natural tendency to deceive the public" and today ordered importers of the Japanese product to discontinue their use.

The Home Garden

It is not too early to begin to plan the garden, both fruit and vegetable, for the coming season. The first thing to do is to plan what fruits and vegetables are to be grown and to have plants and seeds arranged for in good time. It is well to have these matters looked after so that no time will be lost in getting the garden started.

Probably the first work to actually i

be done outside is to get the hotbed ready. Any repairs needed should be made early. Scatter a good coating of well-rotted stable manure over the garden after the trash has been burned and as early as possible plow or spade the manure under. The aim should be to get the garden started as early as weather conditions will permit. Resolve to havo a better garden than last year. Plan for it while the weather is unsuitable for outside work.

PROVERB VERIFIED BY ALBEMARLE COP (By Associated Press) ALBEMARLE, N. C, Feb. 11. The truth of the proverb. "The wicked flee when no man pursueth" probably will never be doubted by Vance Lowder, night policeman of this town. The other night When Lowder was standing in. a darkened doorwav, an tutomobile whizzed by, but stopped about a hundred yards down the street. The chauffeur promptly hopped out, tinkered a bit on the motor, then crawled under the machine to locate the trouble. Thinking he might be p some assistance. Policeman Lowder walked to where the automobile was standing. "What's the trouble, pardner?" he asked the man under the car. The driver poked out his head, glanced at the official garb of Lowder, rolled from underneath the machine cn the opposite side and ran. deserting the automobile and two men seated therein. Investigation showed that the car was carrying several gallons of North Carolina "moonshine" corn liquor.

Also, while for weeks at a time.'
