A SWEETHEART AT THIRTY The story of a Woman's Transformation BY MARION RUBINCAM

Cnapter 99. 1 OUR TALK. "And when." Esther asked, "are you going to be married?" "I don't know," I answered truthfully. "Francis wants It to be February. He says we will go to Paris first, and then straight down to Italy. It will be warm there, and when we go north again we will meet the spring, and have the fine Weather all the time."' "And this is January!" Esther exclaimed. "My land, Enid, how about your trousseau?" "Why bother about one?" I answered, "f. can't afford the sort of clothes I will have to wear as his wife, so I will wait and get what I need abroad." "My land!" Esther breathed entirely overcome by all this. "And then," I went on dreamily, thinking of the plans Francis had made at tea the day before, "then we will go into Holland, which is most lovely in the spring, and over to England. We will be in London early in Mav, when Francis says he likes it best." "He has been there before?" "Oh, often!" I answered casually. "Next summer Francis' mother is to lend us her house in Connecticut, and over the hot weather we will have our real home decorated and furnished, ready for next fall." "Have you picked one out already?" Esther's little eyes were growing almost large with excitement. I had never talked like this to her before. "Oh, no, but Francis owns several, you know." It was hard to keep a certain little worldly pride from my voice, and a certain amusement from my eyes as I spoke, watching the effect each statement had on my sister in-law. I remembered how she had urged me to marry Mark Upjohn who owned a house in va village and an interest in a small business. There was more than vanity in my mind now, however, as I pave Esther this succession of imposing facts. I had a purpose. t "The one he likes best," I continued, "is in the East Sixties I mean the streets that run from 60th street to 69th street," I explained, seeing that she did not understand. It is near the park, and though it looks small, it will do quite well. We shall do it in old Colonial furniture." Esther was hanging on every word. I gave a rapid sketch of the place as Francis had described it. "Violet is to have a little suite of her own on the third floor," I finished. "A sitting room, bedroom and bath. I think I shall cover the walls with yellow damask, and have blue hangings, and as much blue worked in as possible. I always think of Vi as being blue am.' gold." "You always had sentimental ideas about the girl." Esther spoke a little impersonally. I was selfishly elated already she had given her up, though in the tiniest measure, to me. "Well." she summed it up after a while, "all I got to say is you are awfully lucky, running off with a rich man. Who's have thought it?" She looked me over curiously. Strange what a difference clothes make in a woman" she went on with a sigh. "Clothes" I answered. "Do, you think they make so much difference? It's not that I mean, it is not the richness of clothes that counts. Look at Mrs. Baxter at home she has money, and you know what she looks like! It is the sort of clothes you choose, and the way you hold your self when you wear them. Jt is mor than that, it is whether your skin is clear and your hair nice, and whether vour voice is soft and your words well chosen, whether your manner shows thoughtfulness " I broke off. I hadn't meant goins into a lecture. "It is whether you love other people and respect yourself," I ended. "I never had a chance." Esther complained, using the excuse of the weak. "I guess maybe if I had spent Jim's money for fine clothes, instead of making over old house dresses from f.-rent calico. I might he mightn't " the hesitated. "Found some other woman more attractive." I finished brutally. But thero was no use going into details. Esther was what sh war, bocause she had chosen tho careless wav. It was something that at least Heart Problems i Dear Mrs. Thompson: I am moving from town and would like to have a party before I go. Would it be all right to serve ice cream and rake; if not, what would you suggest? There are several boys and girls with whom I have been friendly for threo years. My boy friend and I have not been poing together for some time. There have been a couple of parties at his home to which one of the other girls and myself wore not invited. Should I invite him to my parly? We did not quarrel. We just grew tired of ach other. He still treats me nice. VIOLET. The refreshments you should be acceptable. If you do not care for your boy friend, why invite him? If he has not invited you to social affairs at his home, why should you invite him to a little farewell party which you are giving. Evidenly he does not care much for you, or he would not have ignored you. On the other hand, if you want to be very courteous and kind to him, invite him; perhaps he will realize that he made a mistake in not treating you nicely. she had recognized the difference between what I had made of myself and what she had let circumstances make of her. "Oh, he'n do "it, too, sometimes," Esther said suddenly. "You are In love now, and so is he, and you think Meade will be faithful to you all the time. But men never are. You are 36 or 37 now, though I admit you don't look more than 30 not that, sometimes. But you will be 40 and begin to lose your figure, and get wrinkles and there will be some young chit come along "

A RED NOSE. This 13 the season when there are always many complaints about red noses. That's because the weather is colder, of course. But the real causes of red nose are many. The most common is digestive disorders; after that, poor circulation. A doctor gives the following as what he calls "Local Causes": Diseases of the mucous membrane of the nose' or iu its vicinity, inflammation, adenoid growths, maladies of the skin of the nose, such as acne, erythema, etc. General Causes he classes as bad digection and trouble with the circulation. The latter is due to heart disease, lung trouble, aenemia, cold feet, corsets or tight garters or clothing; the former to abuse of food, gastric or intestinal dyspepsia, or reading too soon after eating. This does not mean that if you have a red nose, you may have any of the more serious things mentioned here. Sometimes too, redness is caused because of a stoppage in the veins supplying blood; sometimes the blood, too think from poor digestion or other troubles, congeals partially in the nose. I believe the circulation is more sluggish in this part of the body than in any other part. In any case, be sure that your health is good or that you are taking means to improve it. Then give yourself stimulating treatments, tapping the nose all over with the fingers to stir the blood, holding hot cloths wrung from hot water over it, then bathing it with cold water and using on it any astringent ice, tincture of benzoin solution, or even toilet water or vinegar. II. With dark blown hair and dark brown eyes, you should wear the brunette colors. These include all shades of brown, bronze and tan, the new henna shade, red, orange and canary yellow, and pastel tints for contrast. JOSEPHINE. "If so," I broke in, "it won't be because I ; have let myself grow less pretty or dainty, or because I have allowed my illusions to be destroyed." But thinking of the deep quality of Francis love, I was not dismayed at Esther's gloominess. We had waited so long" for this, both of us, that now it had come to us, so great a love, we both treasured it and could never hold It lightly. "Well, you had better marry him soon, anyway," Esther remarked, standing up and pulling her red shawl close around her. "I am glad you have got a chance like this. I never had one." "Esther!" I exclaimed suddenly, "do you want one?" "What do you mean?" she asked, turning round on me in surprise. Tommorrow I Go Back.

By j many this was regarded as the real test vote because in this vote the senJ ators were going on record in a rollicall vote. I It is taken that some of the senators who otherwise might have voted with the anti-primary crowd on the killing of the bill, switched when they saw by the outcome of the previous motion that the anti-primary crowd had lost. But even if the vote of 26 to IS i3 taken as the real test of strength, it is seen that the pro-primary people do not have much of a margin to travel on. Break Would Turn Tide. Any considerable break in the Democratic ranks in the senate might turn the tide, but the primary supporters were greatly encouraged by the fact that four Democrats attended the conference with the governor. They feel certain that there are four Democratic senators who will remain to the finish and as has been stated, the gossip is that at least six will remain with the primary supporters. ' ' There was a great deal of comment today about the open manner in which the conference had been held in the governor's office and the announcement made that representatives of the state committee would assist in the attempt to reach a compromise on the question. It is nothing new for members of a state political organization to hand in legislation, but heretofore it has been done quietly, and while the newspapers have published a lot about it, they have never published any open and frank announcements as they were able to do yesterday. McCray Changes It was noticeable,, too, that Governor McCray has changed his political tactics since he engaged in the speakership fight at the start of the session. In that contest he took personal charge and at his rooms in the Claypool hotel interviewed many of the members of the house in the interests of the candidacy of Mr. McClure. But in the present fight he has turned the contest to the state cornniittpe and HI P'l 'Tape's Cold Compound" is j Quickest Relief Known j i Don't stay stuffed-up! Quit blowing ; and snuffling! has merely Eatisfled himself by expressing bis views on the question. Some of the anti-primary people said today that this system, . while it might work very well for the governor,' would not be very good for the fight against the primary. They feared that the attitude taken by the governor would indicate to the legislators that, while he entertained views on the question, he did not intend to apply pressure. Even if he had not Intended to use pressure, they said, it would have been better for their fight if he had remained in a non-commital position, thus leaving legislators in the dark as to what they might expect. " Of course, it is realized that in the primary contest, the house is just as important as the senate, . but most of the work and a lot of the gossip now" seems to center around the senate.
