STATUS OF INDIANS q; MATTER OF DISPUTE V IN NEW YORK STATE
ALBANY, N. Y.. Feb. 5. Despite diligent efforts of the Everett legislative committee appointed nearly a year ago to reconcile various conflicting judicial decisions regarding the position occupied by Indians in New York state,' the status of the aborigines remains a controversial matter. Appointed as a result of legal proceedings affecting Indians in which the question of status was raised, the legislative body has delved into American ajxd European records centuries old and found more entangling situations instead of a solution. Titles in Jeopardy As the investigation continues, an action is pending in the United States supreme court in which the Indians claim they sold lands to white men in the state without proper sanction of ihe federal government which was said to be necessary under the terms of a certain treaty. The mere existence of this case naturally places in jeopardy existing titles to lands throughout the state. Facing the committee for solution are, problems involving the amount and location of the land sold by the Indians and whether, in reality, the Indian ever legally held the lands he sold. There are seven reservations in the Empire state, populated by more than 6,000 Indians. They are permitted, to an extent, to govern themselves, and enjoy immunity unless accused 1 of violation of the state laws. Suburban
