EARLHAM VICTOR IN ' CLASH WITH EM-ROES; - LOCALS SHOW SPEED Playing a fast brand of ball the Earlham basketball five triumphed over the Indianapolis Em-Roos by the score of 31-27 last night at the Coliseum. Both teams showed fast snappy pass work and on the whole it was one of the best played games seen oa the local floor thla yepr. The teams were well matched as to weight and, size and although the Quakers held the lead during the whole game, the margin was not sufficient to warrant any slacking up. Fast Work by Goar. The contest was featured by the brilliant playing of Goar, local forward, who besides resembling a minature whirlwind on floor caged six field goals and three fouls, making a total of 15 piits. This lad bids fair to become one of the fastest forwards ever wearing the Maroon and White uniform. The entire Quaker team, however, deserves the credit of the victory last night rather than any one man. Although" without the services of Johnson, back guard, the locals showed the well oiled mechanism and good basket shooting that has made them recognized as one of the most formidible outfits in the state. Quakers Gain Standing.
Last night's victory over the EmRoes, bringing with it the credit of two victories out of three starts with the capital ''city bunch, gives the Quakers a big boost toward the top notch in state standing. The EmRoes are recognized as among the best and the locals have clearly demonstrated their superiority over the independent crew. At the opening whistle last night the two teams struggled for the coveted first marker and the honor fell to Goar who registered from the field after one minute of play. Behrent evened things up for the visitors. Beck, Carey and Lawler each followed suit with a two-point marker apiece. The rirst half ended with the score 20-12 in the Quakers' favor. "Comeback" In Second. The visitors came baclc with a rush in the second session in a vain attempt to even up the count. Lawler and Carey each scored one goal in this half while Goar accounted for the remaining points. With three minutes to play Hadley was substituted for Lawler. Hennessy of the Em-Roes who proved a bjg factor in the Quakers downfall last week ' was kept well smothered and was only able to connect up for six points. 0. Behrent played a fast game for the losers. The line-ups and summary for last night's game are: v Earlham (31) Em-Roes (27) Iawler F Hennessy Goar ..F H. Behrent Carey ...,C Friddle Beck G O. RED AND WHITE FIVE LOSES AFTER RALLY BY HUNTINGTON FIVE . HUNTINGTON. Feb. 5. Staging a wonderful comeback -n the second period the Huntington high school basketball five defeated the Richmond high basketball five here Friday night by the score 21-13. . Huntington used three substitutes in the first half and the visitors had things their own way in this period, outclassing the home team in every department of the game. At the beginning of the second half Huntington sent her regular line-up in the game and the three fresh men were too much for the visitors who could not stand the onslaught of the locals. The first half ended 9-5 in favor of Richmond. Met Strong Team. . Although the visitors were defeated this game gives them a high standing with the high school teams of the state as Huntington is represented by one of the strongest teams in the history of the school. The victory Friday night makes 15 victories out of 19 starts this season for Huntington. Rost, the speedy floor guard of the red and white, was the bright light of the game playing a wonderful floor game bringing the ball up the floor time after time and added four pretty shots from the center of the floor. Loehr, the visitor's center was not up to Uis usual standard having been ill the greater part of the week. Green Plays Well. Green, the husky back guard for Richmond, played a wonderful defensive game, breaking up play after play of the locals , and it .was largely through his efforts that the score was held as low as it was, Huntington had no individual stars, all the men taking care of their respective positions In first class style. They seemed lost the first half with the three regulars out of the game. Johnson was the scoring star of the game making nine of his team's points and was closely followed by Bonbrake and Moyer with four points each.
