GRIME ON DECREASE IN STATE ACCORDING TO JAIL SENTENCES INDIANAPOLIS. Feb. 3 Measured by the number of prison and jail sentences, crime In Indiana showed a big decrease last year, according to the annual report of the state board of charities, now in the course of preparation. V The- total average daily population at the Michigan City prison, the' Jeffersonvllle reformatory and the Woman's prison, was the lowest in 10 years, totaling 1629 persons. The total number of felons committed to these institutions for the year was 718. The number of misdemeanants, placed in jails, was 17.1S2. or one-fourth the number of five or ten years ago. Sentences Decrease "The number convicted and sentenced to the state farm," said the report, "was less than it has been any

Carried Too Many Birds; Cook is Made Jailbird (By Associated Press) NEW YORK. Feb. 3. A ship's cook who essayed without rehearsal the role of a fat man in an attempt to evade customs inspectors, was held here today charged with violation of the customs laws. Joseph Venier, the galley lord, waddled with difficulty down the gang plank of the steamship President Wilson yesterday. Customs men attracted by his lumbersome gait investigated. Ten birds of paradise, their gorgeous plumage unruffled were found neatly arranged within his trousers.

See Stuffed Rooster; Confess to Thefts (By Associated Press) NEW YORK, Feb. 3 The ghost of a rooster long since eaten has come back to haunt four outlaws who encompassed his untimely death, and today the quartet languishes in jail here awaiting sentence for confessed chicken theft. department of the Indiana Woman's prison was the lowest in 10 years." The report added that suspended sentences for felonies was with one exception the lowest of any of the last five years, and that paroles under the indeterminate sentence law was the lowest of the last five years. Jail Populations. Included in the report was a tabula-, tion of prison and jail populations for comparative years, as shown by the institutional records for Sept. 30 of each year. For 1910, the felons committed to Michigan City, Jeffersonville and the woman's prison totaled 556, and the daily average population was 2,276. Suspended sentences num

bered 196, and paroles 546. For 1916,

fowls they were accused of stealing

had disappeared permanently from the

realm of evidence. They planned to

plead "not guilty."

Then one of the four espied a fin? feathered fowl at the feet of Assisiant Prosecutor Richardson. He nudged his fellows, who gazed for a moment with staring eyes. "Guilty," said the four in unison. "Boy, take this stuffed rooster back to the taxidermist from whom I borrowed it," said the prosecutor.
