By WILLIAM Now" that the British government has glvn individual operators and grain firms permission to import wheat into Great Britain, there may bo, an increased demand from Liverpool and London. Here are a few grains of comfort for the hog raiser. A review of our hog markets during the past eleven years, published in the Market Reporter by the department of agriculture, tells us that "relatively high prices havo ordinarily followed a heavy crop of corn." This eleven year experience lends weight to the belief that within the nest six months, we are likely to see an upward swing in corn prices. This upward movement in corn should also be more pronounced than any ordinary downward movement in the price of hogs. As stated in thfs column last week a pretty good Chicago authority says: "I expect to see corn well up toward the dollar mark the coming summer." But, on the other hand, contrary to above view, is the fact that No. 2 mixed corn sold at Chicago at 63c on track. Tuesday, and at 56c at Omaha and Kansas City, with 54 and 55c the going prices for No. 3 mixed in the Missouri River markets. It i3 also a fact that May wheat, coin and oats made the low of the season at Chicago, on Monday. Hav and straw are highly specula tive articles at Chicago, where prices are apt to vary quite widely from day to day, depending on daily receipts, j Illinois prairip hay is now selling at from $11 to $13. with choicest south- ' . .. , . . .7 western topping the market at $17. , i iln.4on s,t"' w"R p mVv I The too figures on straw on Monday were : Rye straw, $h,; rats stra $14. Canada, has just, signed a contract with "Rainmakpr" Hatfield for increased rainfall between May 1 and August 1 in that district. Hatfield is to be paid $4,000 an Inch, with a maximum of $8,000, for a fourinch rainfall. He is to be given credit for onlv one-half of the total rainfall, i however, the inference being that na ture deserves credit for 50 per cent on the precipitation. It would seem ihat Mr. Hatfield must have given some convincing demonstrations of his ability as a rainmaker to have secured such a contract.
