LEGION FIVE LOSES INDIANAPOLIS FRAY;
USE ROUGH TACTICS "Killing the goose that laid the golden egg", was the title of the basketball drama staged on te Coliseum floor Wednesday, night when the Merchants Heat and Light team of Indianapolis, defeated the American Legion team, 36 to 14. The game was pronounced a poor exhibition of basketball, and the local team was roundly scored by the hom crowd for the tactics employed during the last 10 minutes of play, which were decidedly unsportsmanlike. The local team had a superior proposition, to face when the Indianapolis Independents brought, their regular lineup, including Bacon and Stonebraker of the famous Wabash "Wonder Five", to stack up against the kgion in their second encounter. Johnson, their star guard, was unable to make the trip. Both Work Hard. Both teams played hard during the first half the legion making the fast Capital City five work for its points. Porter and O'Neal, local forwards, were unable to make any consistent attack on the baskets. Porter slipping one through while O'Neal went scoreless for the first time this season. The second half saw the beginning of the "roush stuff" the Black and White endeavoring to draw the visitors away from the slow, easy play. This developed stronger until in the last 10 minutes Porter, Simmons and O'Neal were taken from the game and substitutes sent in with the advice to rough things up. The rest of the game was disgusting. Two Players Star. Simmons and Bertsch showed up well for the local team, play ins: a good consistent game, although Simmons was unlucky in his goal shooting. Bertsch played tho entire game and kept the visitors shooting from a distance, lie was complimented on his playing by the visitors after the game. Taylor was the bie gun for Indianapolis, covering the floor in good style and caging seven fiold goals. Stonebraker, tha flean of basketball players in this state. Ion fed around the floor with his old ease, dropping some neat shots through the draDeries. The line-up and score follow: Am. Legion. (14) M. H. & L. (36) O'Neal F F. The proposal j to hold the Dempsey-Carpentier I world's heavyweight championship in j Montreal was discussed here today between Tex Rickard and two Canadian promoters, C. F. Graham and F. C. Goortspeed, members of a dominion syndicate. Rickard said he had been requested by the Canadians to consider their mission confidential and had not decided whether he would divulge the developments of the conference. William A. Brady, who with Charles B. Cochran, recently withdrew from the bout said today he was prepared, whenever requested to assign his interest and that of Cochran, to Rickard. The latter, however, said he intends to wait until Feb. 1, when he has arranged a conference here with Jack Kearns before tackling the project alone. Bowling PENNSY BOWLING LEAGUE. Round House.
