A SWEETHEART AT THIRTY The Story of a Woman's Transformation BY MARION RUBINCAM
Chapter 88. - ESTHER COMES I left Bud and Violet alone as soon as I could, and ran off to Helen's tea room to sit and talk with her. The dinner rush was just over and her pretty little restaurant was rapidly clearing out. I slid into the big arm chair back of her desk, and while Helen counted up the dinner checks, we talked. I I had not told VI about Francis, : and I did not tell Helen, yet. One ' of the sweetest things about a first engagement is keeping it secret for a little time. Every woman likes to clasp to her heart this precious ' bit of knowledge, ; before she shares it with a com-, ; paratively indifferent world. : "More trouble down In Wall street," she observed, adding up figures expertly. "How is Bud coming on?" "Rather badly," I answered. "At least, he insisted on breaking his engagement to Violet until he was clear of this business." "Really!" Helen put down her pencil and turned around to me. "Do you know 1 admire him for that. I didn't know he had it in him." "I am afraid Vi. doesn't share your feelings. She is broken-hearted," I answered. i "Well, poor child, she would be. But it is the thing for Bud to do just the same. I don't tbink he took any money--ho is nor; that sort, that is evident o anyone. But he was foolish, and he was taken in by that Crowd he ran about with. I see they fcuspect this Siracns." "Yes, 1 answered absently, not kuowiutr how tltis knowledge would affect Cud, and not realizing its importf.nro. "By the way I had a letter from Esther this vim,7js. She fs coming to spend ue holidays with us." Helen's eyebrows went up a little, tnd a slight gleam came into her nmc-cnis eyf. "That's nice," she said, in a noncomm!tt?.l tone. f "Vi is going to find a position over thf holidays," I went on, givin;: my l.-'.st bit of gossip. "Excellent. Tell her to try the book departments in some of The big stores. I hear they neeed people for the Christinas rush, and like getting college girls," I went back early to find Vi and Bud washing the dinner dishes, Vi, with her sleeves rolled up, drying, and Bud, with his hands in a pan of hot water, cheerfully shaking soap until he formed a pyramid of pc'arly soapsuds above the pan. I kn.?w they were both happy, for the time, at loast. To Vi, of course, this was a little foretaste of the domestic life she wanted so desperately to Bud, dish-washing was a pleasant novelty. "I'm exiled while your mother is here," he was saying. "But I will charter that buby-hole table "at Helen's for t.ea every afternoon. And then I will meet you where ever you condescend to work for the holidays" he was smiling his merriest at" her now "and ' take you there for tea. So your mother need not know, and you won't be deceiving her, either." "I want her to like you though," Vi protested. "Oh, well, I do too. She will wh.?n I start to make my fortune. But so far. I have wasted everything I earned and gotten myself into a deuce of a scrape, and ruined my reputation and gone in debt. That is not much ot a recommendation to present me with." ; So we let it stand. And the day after the college closed for the holidays, Vi did go around answering ads, with a courage that I could not help but admire. The second day she found a temporary position, in a small book shop on Fifth avenue, where she made $15 a week, and where the surroundings really were very pleasant. Francis was out of town on business, but wrote me that, he expected to get back by Christmas day. . "And when I come, I have a rather nice little engagement ring that I hope you will like," he wrote, "but you shan't have it until Christinas day. Then 4 shall give it to you with proper ceremony, and take you up to my house to have dinner with mother. I haven't told her yet, but I will when 1 get home." j Heart Problems j . Dear Mrs. Thompson: We are two girls seeking advice. (1) We have bov friends and go to shows in the evening, is it all right? If the boys are respectable and you have the consent of your parents. (2) One of the boys does not come on beaux's night. Do you think he has another girl? Thi.s is a silly question to ask, as both of you are too young to be seriously in love. (") Is it all right for Tf Viqvo rrnrtri liiu'onifi it wnnlH hp far better that you visit there than elsewhere. (-1) What is regular beaux night? There is no such night. 3) One of the boys has been laid off from work and is going homo. Would it be all right for me to go home with h?m? No. (t) 1 go to high school and take no interest in my studies and want to quit. Would you advise me to?--Si ay in school so long as you can. If thoughts about boys nil your mind, there is a good reason why you tnke no interest in school work. You vhould pay more attention to your chool work. (7) Should we accept 'welry from the boys? Ask your "other for her advice. (S) We have l '-own hair and blue eyes, what should v wear? Almost any color will match. (TO Are the skirts going to be longer or shorter this spring? Not much difference will be noted, although some reports from Paris say they will be slightly longer. Dear Mrs. Thompson: In reply to your letter from the lady wanting to adopt a baby, I'd frankly Mate I am expecting a tiny tot in r-ne, month. My husband deserted me. f have one already 15 months old. I rannot provide for two and if I could find my little one a good home I think it wouid be selfish in me and be doing the child an injustice. Please notify I he lady and me ?lso if she cares to :ome and see- me. I should like very much to talk with her. Thanking you r. advance I am, A YOUNG BROKEN HEARTED MOTHER. Arrangements already have been oiade in this case.

Meanwhile, there was Esther to consider. She wrote us the train she was coming on, and I went up to meet her. VI was working, so I went alone. "I'll never forget the shock of her appearance not so much her curious clothes as her face Poor Esther, in spite of her troubles, had grown fatter which seemed illogical to me. She wore the same hat or bonnet. It was a bit of both that she had had for six years, and a tattered sweater under her long coat. She had innumerable bundles. But I was glad to see her for all that, and went up and kissed her affectionately. "I expect I look like Susie from the country," she said at once, looking at me and at the fashionably dressed throng around the station. "My land, I never saw skirts so high! Enid, how can you wear such heels? I've got a barrel of stuff along, but Jim expressed it, so it will come straight to your house." "It came this morning," I told her. "Now I shall hire a taxi and take you and vour packages down to our home in style." "My land!" Esther exclaimed again. "What a noisy place! I ain't been to ho ritv eincd T wn 3ft Vf-ars old. ! Jim's getting that chanky, I thought I would not come this time even. ' She leaned back in the cab, and I looked at her again. Little puffs of flesh were quite visible under her eyes, her cheeks sagged, her skin was coarse from wind, sun and neglect, her hair hung in wisps from her hat Esther had completely let go. I felt a sudden rush of pity for her. Tomorrow Francis Helps. To Enlarge Sixth District is Gossip at Washington
PALLADIUM NEWS BUREAU WASHINGTON. Jan. 27. In Indiana congressional circles jt is being gossiped that the Indiana legislature in redistricting the state to reduced the congressional districts from 13 to 12, in compliance with the reapportionment act which has been passed by the national house of representatives, will consider two plans for enlarging the Sixth district. One plan, according to the report received here, provides for adding a part of the Seventh district to the S"ixth. The Seventh district comprises Marion county in which Indianapolis is located. Other Plan. The other plan under consideration is to take Johnson, Bartholomew and Decatur counties from the Fourth and add them to the Sixth district. Counties from either the Second or Third districts would be added to the Fourth in the event it los.t Johnson, Bartholomew and Decatur counties. - Under the reapportionment act each congressional district shall have a, population of not less than 242,000, or 31,000 more than the old apportionment. Shift Townships. The 1920 census gives the eight counties of the Sixth Indiana district a population of 183,220 or approximately 59,000 less than athe new required apportionment population. Marion county, comprising the Seventh district, has a population of 381,000, according to the 1920 census, which is 106,000 in excess of the apportionment. It is believed that if the three eastern townships of Marion county, including Warren township which contains the suburb of Irvington, were added to the Sixth district that that distruct would have the required populaion and that the Seventh disriot's population would be reduced to only a little more than the required apportionment. May Go to Fight. In the event a part of Marion county is not added to the Sixth district it is almost certain that a part of that district will be assigned to the Fifth district. The addition of Bartholomew, Johnson and Decatur counties would bring to the sixth district an additional population of 62.439, which added to its present populntion would make a total of a little over 245,000, or 3,000 more than the required apportionment population. Added Decatur. Johnson county borders Shelby, the extreme western county of the sixth district, on the west. It has a population of 20,739. Bartholomew county,

Until about seven years ago Decatur county was a part or the sixth district. At that time Finly Gray, one of the few Democrats who ever represented the sixth district In congress, arranged to have Decatur, which is normally a Republican county, added to the fourth district. Strongly Democratic. The fourth district was then so strongly Democratic that it was believed the addition of a small Republican county like Decatur would noi endanger Democratic control of that district, but in 1916 the elimination of Decatur county from the sixth district did not prevent Gray's defeat for reelection. Also, in 1918, it was the Republican majority that Decatur county gave which lost the fourth district to the Democrats. a population of 17,813 and Johnson county has a population of 20,739. Senator Fall has. devoted much time to Investigating Mexican affairs, and Fletcher was formerly American ambassador to that county. It is expected that Mr. Harding will outline his Mexican policy soon after he assumes the presidency, probably In a special message to congress. It is not expected that he will discuss this question in his inaugural address. DRY LAWS OF STATE AID TO FEDERAL RULE fBv Associated Pres CHARLESTON. W. Va., Jan. 27. The prohibition laws of West Virginia must be enforced as an aid to the Federal laws, under an opinion of the state supreme court of appeals, handed down yesterday. The court ruled that where the state laws do not con flict with the national laws, their enforcement will aid in the general purpose of the statute against the manufacture and sale of intoxicants. The opinion further held that the Federal prohibition laws do not provide an exclusive remedy for enforcement of the dry amendment to the constitution. The opinion was given in the case of the state against Frank Knosky, in; which the defendant contended that federal court had exclusive iurisdiction of liquor oases. The decision of the circuit court of Hancock county in the case was reversed and remanded. Bandits have robbed Francisco Villa of 200 bead of horses. GERMANS RELEASE AMERICAN PROPERTY
BERLIN. Jan. 27. American property which was taken under control by the German custodian of enemy property after the United States entered the war, has been unconditionally released, said Dr. Daniel Von Haimhausen, under secretary for foreign affairs today. Final settlement with the American owners, however has been Impossible, owing to the provision of the Versailles treaty which stipulated that such settlements should be made through an international clearing house, he added, and this operation cannot be carried out until the United States ratifies the treaty, or a new pact is negotiated. In cases where American factories were placed under German control, the under secretary said their staffs were permitted to remain. Out of 186 of such factories and corporations Snlnhur Hears L A Pimply Skin Apply Sulphur as Told When Skin Breaks Out.
