LEGION IN INDIANA WILL BACK ENGLISH AS SCHOOL LANGUAGE
(By Associated Press) INDIANAPOLIS, Jan. 20. Indiana is to be made the model state of the country In the Americanization movement of the American Legion. In pushing forward a fire-fold plan centering about the schools the legion will seek to force obedience to the Indiana law instruction. In promising the Legion staunch support, members of the State Board of Education ppeciflcally asked the Legion to do all possible to enforce the English-teach-in? law. "We are going to make Indiana a symbol for other states of the union, pays Henry Ryan, national director of the Legion's movement, who Is making preparations for beginning work in this state. "The plan centers In the rchools, and we want the law first to compel the use of English as the only medium of instruction; second, to require at least one-year teaching of American history and the civil government in the elementary and high schools; third, that every college and university in the state- give credit for the study of American history and civil government; fourth, that the flag Fhall be kept raised over the schoolhouses every day; fifth, that ten minutes be devoted daily to American patriotic exercises in all schools." Patriotic Exercises Wanted. In only one respect does the Indiana law fail to meet the Legion's program, and that is the daily compulsory patri otic exercises. Before the present legislature ends its session, it will be called upon by the Legion and the legislative committee of the State Board of Education, beaded by Clifford Fundenberg, of Huntington, to write this provision Into the law. Without exception legislators asked to support this law have promised to expedite its passage. The greatest need in Indiana in the Americanization movement, is general compliance with the English-only-leaching law, according to Linneas Hines, state Miperintendent of public, instruction, wno nas inrormea Mr. Ryan that in one county the prosecuting attorney has declined to attempt prosecutions, under the all-English law. "Back up this law for teaching in English," President W. E. Stone, of Purdue University, informed the Legion officials in discussing the Americanization work, and President William Lowe Bryan, of Indiana university, pdded that the "law is not being obeyed." Many Taught Other Languages. No exact figures on the violation of the law are available, but a nation-wide purvey ihat is being made by the Legion tends to, 6how that thousands of children in this country are receiving Instruction in some language other than English. The Indiana law applies to all schools, public, private and parochial. After getting Its educational program under way, the Legion's Americanization . movement will center attack upon the foreign-language I'ublications, according to Mr. Ryan. "We want to get after these foreignlanguage papers," he says. "They have a circulation of seven million monthly." The Theatres MURRETTE. It's a tough break when, Just as you're convinced you have placed the skids under an old love, you find she has married the father of your fiance and become your future mother-in-law. This is the sort of a love mess Lew Cody, the screen Lothario, wishes on himself in "Occasionally Yours", his latest Robertson-Cole super-special, which opens at the Murrette Theatre Friday for a two days run. How does he get out of it? Go see the picture. What's a fiance to "Lovable Lew" when trouble is in sight. Mr. Cody is at his best in "Occasionally Yours," and why shouldn't he be when you consider he has beautiful Betty Blythe, Elinor Fair, Lillian Rambeau, Dorothy Wallace, Cleo Ridgely, Yvonne Gardelle, William Quinn, Barney Sherry and Lloyd Hamilton to support him. MURRETTE Owen Moore in "The Chicken in the Case," which was shown at the Murrette theatre yesterday, scored a distinct success. After having seen Mr. Moore's acting in his former successes, something out of the ordinary was expected of "The Chicken in the Case," and no one was disappointed. The picture was written and directed by Victor Heerman, and great credit is due him for the wonderfully entertaining and humorous production he has made for the screen. The story is of a country youth who, in order to come into his inheritance borrows his best friend's wife. The complications that arise when his well meaning aunt, decides to take a hand in the well-being of the couple, and how this country youth finally squirms out of the matrimonial muddle lie has gotten himself into, forms one of the most delightful bits of comedy that has come to the screen for some time. Of course, in the end the hero finds A Home Treatment for Asthma Makes Breathing Easy A Worcster, Mass., doctor has suggested the following simple, harmless and inexpensive home treatment for bronchial asthma, chronic bronchitis and cought and colds which threaten to affect the lungs. himself a wife, but that is only as all good pictures should end. The acting of Miss Teddy Sampson as the borrowed wife and Vivian Ogden, as the well-meaning aunt, Is decidedly humorous, and together with Mr. Moore'a droll, humorous mannerisms, tend to make the picture a tremendous success. Katherine Perry is charming and sweet as Mr. Moore's leading woman. WASHINGTON. Douglas MacLean's famous uniform, the disappearance of which was the basis of much of the action of "Twenty-Three and a Half Hours' Leave," makes its second, and probably last appearance in "The Rookie's Return", MacLean's latest Paramount picture produced by Thomas H. Ince, which will be featured at the Washington Theatre on Friday and Saturday next, as the rookie dons mufti and places the favorite "unie" carefully away in moth balls. When it was decided that the young star was to appear in another comedy in which he was to portray the role of one of Uncle Sam s "four million," the well-known olive drab was still included in his wardrobe. In order to convert it from the spick and span uniform of the training camp days to the battle-carred uniform of the returning veteran it was necessary to subject it to considerable rough treatment, but in spite of its dirt and tears, it is the same one which shared honors with Mac Lean in his premiere production. "The Rookie's Return" is said to be the most original and entertaining comedy in which he has yet appeared. Doris May plays opposite the star. MURRAY "Beware of the Bride," a new William Fox farce comedy, shows at the Murray theatre Thursday. Eileen Percy, one of the most pleasing combinations of beauty and talent on the screen, is the bride to beware of which is the very thing that people who have seen her in former successes, such as "The Husband Hunter," simply can't do. The opening subtitle says "When a 114 Eggs A Day Now Instead of 25 A Day This Means About $126 Extra Income . Per Month for Mrs. Ropp. "I have 200 hens, including late pullets not old enough to lay, and had been getting 25 to 30 eggs a day. Then I tried Don Sung and am now getting 107 to 114 eggs a day." Mrs. Essie B. Ropp, R. R. 2, Littles, Ind. This increase of 7 dozen a day In the middle of winter, at 60c a dozen, makes $126 extra income per month. Don Sung for her 200 hens cost about $2.50. It paid her, and we guarantee it will pay you. Give your hens Don Sung and watch results for one month. If you don't find that it pays for itself andpays you a good profit besides, simply tell us and your money will be cheerfully lefunded. Don Sung (Chinese for egg-laying) is a scientific tonic and conditioner. It is easily given in the feed, improves the hen's health and makes her stronger and more active. man turns his honeymoon into a business trip, let him beware of his bride"; which introduces the face that Mary Emerson (Eileen Percy), the bride of a month, learns that her adoring husband is summarily called back to business. She prepares to go with him, and taking advantage of his absence while preparing for the trip, she goes to a masked ball. The fun starts before the ball, when Mary agrees to meet a former suitor, also a newly wed, at the ball and identify him by a suit or armor. Mary is forced to dress in the apartment of her partner to the dance, and helps herself to his absent wife's silk hose and Parisian slippers. When the wrong man gets the only suit of armor available, and in it appears at the ball, the fun quickly becomes uproarious and continues at high speed to the end. The story was written by Edgar Franklin, a master of creating screen farce. "BUDDIES" DELIGHTS THEATER AUDIENCE
By MARVIN. If there was a member of ;the "Buddie" cast who fell below expectations, we. were 'unable to discern he or 6he at the night performance at the Murray Theatre, Wednesday. Without a reasonable doubt the production was the hit of Richmond's theatrical season. It abounded with the feeling of goodfellowship one might expect to find among the "Buddies" away from the old U. S. A.; it presented comedy of a nature to provoke the laughter of the most refined; no better music is likely to be found among the best musical comedies, and at several points the introduction of sadness and bitterness caused a choking in the throats of the silent sympathetic onlookers. , William Wayne, as Sonny, was a most delightful character. He fairly radiated personality, and the part he played gave him the opportunity to display himself in a commendable role. Special mention of Sonny's singing, and later his artistic stepping, is deserved. ' v Babe, played by Lambert Terry, distinguished himself as a bashful lover. His reticence at intervals; prompted by his love for Julie, a winsome French maid, caused merriment of a wholesome nature. Everyone liked Babe. While each of the 15 characters cannot be discussed at length, we would mention the important roles enacted by Julie, whose evident love for Babe caused that individual much embarassment; Louise Maitland, the fiancee of Sonny, and a most cold and practical girl under trying circumstances Alphonse Pettibois, villain and self-worshiper, who enjoys reminding others that he is a "gentleman"; also Madame Benoit, whose splendid work as the worried mother of a French family, merits approval. Songs which found a response in the hearts of the audience included "The Wail of the Tale of the Long, Long Trail," "Darling I," and "To Be Together is the Thing." Group and quartet numbers were a treat. We have nothing but praise for the cast, their songs and the splendid vehicle by which they touched practically all of the emotions of which a human is capable. PLANS TRIP INTO ARCTIC WHEELING, W.
