RICHMOND ACTRESS IN "TWIN BEDS" PLAY CONGENIAL PERSON
'BY MARV "They've just treated , me splendidly," were the enthusiastic words of Antoinette Rochte, former Richmond girl, who played the role of Signora Monti in "Twin Beds." at the Washington theatre Thursday night. Miss Rochte was talking to the writer in the hall leading to her dressing room, following the performance. " was a bit nervous when 1 first rted," she added, with her broad emile, a trace of which could be found at times, during her acting. "It was my first time in Richmond in a long, long time. I won't tell just how long because I'm afraid you might find how old I am. It's enough to have your old friends know, without giving a hint to the younser generation. , Remembers Girlhood. "My father was Mr. J. B. Hartcorn, and we lived for years in the first square on North Eleventh street. We also lived on South Tenth and A streets when I was a little girl. I can remember going to shows with a friend when I was quite small. "I left Richmond to attend school when I was 13 years old, and I married when I was 16. Later I divorced and never married again. Both daddv and mother live with me on Long Island. Until about two years ago my parents were residents of Richmond, but we just "pooled our resources and bought us home where we now live." Marv Interrupted. At this time we were interrupted as a locpl person touched her upon the arm, "Don't you remember me?" questioned the young man. Miss Rochte puzzled for a moment and a bis: grin over-SDread her face, "I can't call your name." "W B ," he cried, wringing her hand. "Oh. yes," and she laupjjed heartily. A few minutes elapsed before we could find time to talk. "I've been with th's company for five years." she resumed. "Fo"r years of that time continuously. Then I was with another fompanv awhile before returning. Thev all wanted me for this company, so I reioined. It is a most congenial bunch." Warm Handclaso. Miss Rochte is a true Richmondite. Her handcla"T is strong and warm, nnd she has the most charmineway of beinc; friendly. "They used to call me Nellie Popcorn when I was a grirl here," she laughed, "it came from my name beinr Hart corn." We don't wish to tell any secrets, but Mis Rochte's hair is well sprinkled with prey off stage, and she wears classes. We know she cen't he so verv old thonsh. for wasn't she splendid in the play? Tells how Dreco built his body and health Mr. Robert Grossman, 41 Sixth St., Richmond, Ind., has a message for every man and woman who suffers from stomach disorders, nervousness, constipation, dizzy spells, and general rundown condition of the system. II is interesting reading. Here it is: "Stomach trouble was undoubtedly the cause of my suffering. I suffered all the pains of indigestion after every meal. I also was constipated and had had dizzy spells. I couldn't sleep at night and was always very nervous. Of course I became greatly rundown and things looked pretty black for me, but I heard so many people speak highly of the new herb remedy, Dreco, and I saw so much about it in the newspapers, that I decided to give it a trial. I took just one bottle of Droco, and it did wonders for me; I have jiever seen its equ;tl. One dose of it buoyed nu up wonderfully; I am taking it risht along, and am simply getting along fine. now. You can add my recommendation to the hundreds of others." Dreco has time and time again proved Its worth in all human ailments, which had their inception in the digestive tract. It seems to be just the right thing for such ailments as indigestion, gastritis, dyspepsia, biliousness, constipation. sleeplessness, headaches, rheumatism and similar ills. Dreco is not a new fangled patented medicine. It is simply a combination of roots and herbs put up according to an old fashioned recipe in a modern, scientific way. It contains no dangerous mineral salts, or acids, and is safe and sure in iTSi action. Dreco is now sold by a'l good drugFists and is high'y recommended in Richmond by Clem Thistlethwaite's sven drug stores. Advertisement. SUNDAY 4 Murray Earle Williams In "The Romance Promoters." Murrette "Love, Honor and Behave." Washington Thomas Meighan, "Conrad In Quest of His Youth". MURRAY "The Romance Promoters," a story full of delightful surprises and twists, will be shown in its picturized form at the Murray Theatre. !t is a Vitagraph production, with Earle Williams, the popular star, taking the role of Todfield King, innocent victim of a plot which foists happiness and fortune upon him. The story is by L. H. Robbins, and the scenario by Harvey Thew. MURRETTE The screen version of "Kismet," a Robertson-Cole super-special, in which Otis Skinner makes bis debut on the silver sheet, and vhich is now showing at the Murrette Theatre, is a magnificent spectacle. Like a page from a fairy tale of old reads the description of the Wazir Mansur's palace, constructed for a seauence in "Kismet." The floor of this enchanted palace is of Mosaic marble in pastel shades of blue, lavendar, nile green and pink, which on the screen presents a soft, misty gray appearance. The colonades and arches seem to be wrought of purest gold, inlaid with jewels. The platform at the far end of the great room where the Mansur holds his audiences, is draped with silks ef the most exquisite colors and on the floor about the room are strewn cushions and rugs of silks and velvets of such texture and beauty as to move the most blase to words of admiration. Truly a gorgeous setting and one worthy of presenting to the screen, Otis Skinner, America's most celebrated romantic actor in his greatest stage success. MURRAY VAUDEVILLE. One act stands out in the present bill at the Murray theatre. It is in a class above the work of the others. Marion Gibney, a comedienne of unusual merit, entertains quite informally. She was forced to return twice p.t the Thurrday afternoon performance. In a matter of fact manner that is amusing, and an ease and naturalness wholly refreshing, she recites ream after ream of small talk with a point to every phrase. She wins her way by humorous references to nearby towns and local people. Her song, "A Rag, A Bone, and A Hank of Hair," was terrible in its richness. May we say she would make a good vampire? She showed strong inclinations in her encore numbers. A woman with the regular number of feet, and a man with but one foot, offer a surprisingly clever and unique act. The man'S ability to jig with his one foot and a crutch; stand upon his one natural support and hop around upon the -crutch only, are, features of note. Dancing of the two' together proved that a one-legged man need not be barred from dance halls. The team carries a drop, which adds color to the scene. The Laurel Girls, appearing upon first, enacts a bed room scene which p) Prices Have I Reached Bottom They will not go lower ! Now is the time to buy, because you can buy at lowest-level prices. Although the Two Carletons are i said to be comedy acrobats, we are only able to discern the acrobatic part of the claim. The two do not receive the appreciation they should, have for their difficult stunts. A little good that might be comedy introduced into the offering is sadly lacking. YANKEES IN FRANCE PUT SNAP INTO PLAY i After 12 consecutive months in the Selwyn theatre. New York, "Buddies," the biggest theatrical hit of last season, has started its tour . of the leading cities of America, and will be the atraction at the Murray next Wednesday. ' The Selwyns are the producers responsible for the presentation, while George V. Hobart is the author of the book, and B. C. Hilliam is responsible for the lyrics and musie. While "Buddies" is not strictly a slap stick musical comedy it may be accurately described as a smart musical comedy, which merely means that the artistic unities of the plot are not destroyed by irrelevant songs every few minutes. On the contrary, Mr. Hobart has written one of the tenderest romances the stago has ever known, threading it with a never ceasing vein of rich humor. The scene of "Buddies" is in France; its heroine a peasant maid of this devastated land, and the hero, an American soldier billeted in her home Just after the signing of the armistice The young American "Buddies" do all they can to forward the romance, one of them even going so far as to involve his own happiness by aiding his pal. And as they prove their loyalty the audience learns much of their life in France; their homey doings; their unfailing good humor; and their quick response to melody.
