A SWEETHEART AT THIRTY r The Story f a Woman's Transformation BY MARION RUBINCAM
Chapter 76. MORE SUSPICIONS. Violet was studying hard, and she was trying to play hard, too. With such a combination, something had to Buffer her pleasures or her studies, or her health. But in some way she managed to pull through well enough. Sh passed the examination and she told often of the commendation of her professors. "I should not go out so much, I know," she said, coming in about mid.night once. "But if I don't go with Bud when he wants to go out he feels badly, and if he happens to be in one of her stubborn moods, he goes away with Pete and that crowd." "Are you tired?" I asked, noticing that her face was rather pale. "No, not very," she said. "Anyway, I have some reading to do for tomorrow. It's the first lecture, or I'd - wait till morning. . She slipped out of her evening gown, which she had worn that nigBt to a dance somewhere, and began loosening her hair. I always liked to watch her. shake down that golden, flying mass; like all brunettes, I admired blonde types immensely. But I saw that she looked a little tired; even her youth', and vitality could not quite stand the pace she had set herself this winter. ..'."Better go to bed and get up early." "No," she said, shaking her hair all around her shoulders, and putting on the blue kimono I had made for her. Ws only literature, and that's easy to do. You go to sleep and don't worry." But I did not sleep immediately, and half an hour later I smelled coffee boiling. I got up to, and into a kimono and went into the living room. ,"Dear child," I protested; "you must not drink coffee at this hour it's nearly one!" "I know," Vi answered, coming in with a steaming cup on a tray. "But my brain simply won't register. I've read 12 pages without an idea of what it all means. This will just stimulate me enough to finish my work it won't keep me awake." It smelled wonderfully good, and I was wide awake myself by that time. So I, too, poured myself some hot
Heart Problems Dear Mrs. ThompBon: I am a young married woman of 20, and have been married three months. During that time I have had a great deal of trouble, which, I think, might have been averted. My husband, who was good to me in our home, persisted in telling me about his debts which came up after we were married, and which were contracted before. He lied to me about all of them, blaming it first on his brother, then on his father, who had moved out of town; but when curiosity prompted me to investigate, I found what he said to be untrue. It was then that I told him I couldn't s:inl it,' as-1 had given him several chances, and unless he told the truth I would have to leave, as I was not used to being lied to and deceived. He replied, "All right." He made no further protest and X went home. Then he sold what furniture was paid for and went away, without any further ceremony, leaving the tfebts behind. Since he has gone I have received a card from him in a western city, giving me his address, if I cared to write. What shall I do? At times I feel brokenhearted. The disappointment has . been terrible. I cannot think he doesn't care, for he did so many little things and took such an interest in our home while we were together. But his work was poor, and things did not seem to go right. There seemed to be a lack of harmony and now our home is all broken up, I fool in my own heart that he regrets it, and now from what he has told others that he doesn't blame me. What is your advice to me? Should I answer, and if I do, what should I say? LOIS. Yes, write a letter to your husband, and in it talk to the man you love, and not to the unworthy part of his nature which broke up your home. Tell him that you have faith in him, and that ycu realize his humiliation over his debts made him lie. Say that you are going to think of him as honorable and starting all over again in the right way. Do not talk of the past; that is over now, and the less said about it the better. I believe' your letter will do your husband a world of good and that he will want to correspond with you. I would advise you to let him, and to encourage him as much as you can. Give him hone that a new home can be started when it can be built on a better foundation. His debts should . be paid first, of course. You certainly have had trouble. I hope, however, that the future will hold more of happiness for you. Do not go back to your husband unless you find he is really worthy. Your life is too precious a thing to spoil by living with , a man who does not share your high ideals. Divorce and an entirely now start would be better.
coffee and picked up the paper to read, till the girl was through her lessons. It was no way to preserve my hardly won youthful look but then, J argued, it never hurts to break a rule once! ' ; VI finished her work and went out fo get some crackers to eat. She wanted to talk; something was on her mind. "Did you know that Bud asked me to marry him the other night?" "Yes that is, I thought so," I answered, glad she had brought up the subject. "These thin walls, you know; it's hard not to hear " "It's all right, I'm glad you did," VI said, settling herself lower down in the cushions of the chair and munching the cracker. "Are you really engaged, then, and are you happy?" 1 asked. I hated to intrude on her feelings, yet I felt she wanted to tell me something. : "I don't know whether you would call it engaged," she answered, slowly. "We are both pretty young, I guess. I mean, mother was married and I think Laura was born when she was my age but things are different nowadays, and somehow more complicated. Anyway, father has a farm, and their living was guaranteed by that. Bud has nothing to gain by marrying me, and everything to lose." "Where did you pick up that phrase it doesn't sound like you?" I asked her. "I picked it up fr6m Peter," she said. I don't like him, but he has a lot of . intelligence, of a sort, and tonight he talked a lot to me. "I mean, I'd marry Bud tomorrow, whether he had any money or any prospects or not. I suppose the material things are important but somehow they don't seem to matter to me. I'd go take a position and earn money, and we would live in a wee place, no nearly as nice as this, and I think we would be awfully happy. But " "But what ?" I asked. "But I know Bud wouldn't be. He wants everything awfully comfortable, he likes money and he likes to spend it. He's earning $18 a week, that's all. I don't know when he will get more. He seems to think the only way to do is to speculate, taking the tips Pete gives him, and that he gets in other ways." "He's been lucky enough to be encouraged " "Beginner's luck fool's luck, P-ete calls it. But he is in debt to Pete $500, and I think he owes that Mr. Simons too. He won't tell me. But he has money he spent a lot tonight. LOSS OF POWER and strength

I saw several $20 bills In his wallet when he paid this evening. Her blue eyes were troubled as she looked at me over the table. "And that's no basis for a happy marriage," she said. "If it were just his salary, and if he were honestly working to makejnore, it would 'be different. ' But this way, I couldn't tell when he won and when he lost. He won't tell me any more, I do know this, that Pete and Mr. Simons loaned him some money and he bought something called C. X. Oil. They were talking tonight of it. They say it ! is
to go up Hve points Tomorrow, and then Bud will make a dollar for every point it goes up, on every sbere he's bought." - Next day she came in, holding an afternoon paper, her face a little white. "Look here," she said, pointing to the financial columns. "That stock Bud bought went down, not up. That means he lost a dollar on every share, for every point it dropped, and it dropped four; points. I wonder how many shares he had, and what he's going- to do? and where . does he get the money?" SHAPELY. SHOULDERS. A woman's shoulders can be so so beautiful with a little effort on her part that it seems a shame that any woman should go through life without having beautiful, or at least, shapely shoulders. The shoulders are particularly important this year because our evening gowns are so very, very filmy on top that it is impossible to disguise any defects. As a matter of fact, in order to wear the very newest evening dresses, ono must be beautiful all over, for we are leaving very little to the imagination this season. I have seen some gowns but I have only space today to give a few suggestions for developing the shoulders, chest and arms. I do not know which are the ugliest, shoulders so fat that roll?! of- flesh hang about them, or shoulders so thin that the skin fairly-clings to the bones. Whatever may be the trouble, exercise will help to remedy it, since exercise is a general corrective. If you are too fat, you can always reduce; and if you are too thin, you can do everything possible to build yourself up. I need not repeat the oft given advice about swimming as a means of developing chest, shoulders and arms. If you live anywhere near the water and can get out in a row boat, you will do a great deal in the way of developing your shoulders and chest by rowing for ten minutes every day. If you cannot, you can do a rowing exercise at hone by holding arms

the hands backward toward the chest as though you were pulling against a great weight. This is particularly good for developing the little hollows which become between the throat and shoulder blade. ,. Deep breathing exercises are also of enormous benefit. Mrs. I. S. I anv verv glad that the suggestion of formine- a "fit wrmn'a
jrlub," which came originally from "Ova Waite" should be taken up with
so mucn emnusiasm by my readers. I have received letters about it from all parts of the country. Why can you not form a club in your particular city? Vigorous exercise will reduce if you do not over-eat and to make up the lost flesh. Your gym apparatus would - be very simple broom sticks will do for the long rods necessary to certain exercises, and Indian clubs are cheap to buy. After that all you need is a room large enough so that you can swing your arms and go through the exercises. I will be very glad to send a course of instruc
tion to any clubs that are formed. An Anxious Girl Your hair is quite long enough; in fact, I think it has been, growing rapidly. You are suffering just now from a little temporary bashfulness, which you can overcome if you try hard enough. Unfortunately, this help must come from yourself and not from an outsider. If you will force yourself to animation when you are with people you will be surprised how quickly you will overcome your bashfulness. All Inquiries addressed M ' Mill Forbes In care of the "Beauty Chats" department will be answered Ir. these columns In their turn. This requires considerable time, however, . owing- to the great number received.
