Star in "Twin Beds"
Zaina Curzon Miss Curzon provides frown destroying and mirth producing fun in the comedy frolic "Twin Beds" announced for the "Washington theater, Thursday, Jan. 13. The special cast comes here intact from its run at the English theater at Indianapolis. The Theatres MURRETTE In all the length and breadth of fiction there is no more picturesque a character than Hajj, the beggar of Bagdad. Edward Knoblock, the playwright, made Haji famous in the stage version of "Kismet," and Otis Skinner, perhaps the best known and most popular actor in the country, immortalized Hajj during the years he gave life to this characterization on the stage. The Robertson-Cole Company has (limed the famous play, which will be run four days at the Murrette Theatre starting Wednesday and thousands of people in this city are going to have an opportunity of seeing Hajj, the beggar portrayed by no less a person than Otis Skinner himself. It is a safe prediction that the swaggering, crafty, adventure loving and amusing old Bagdad vagabond will win every one's heart and in the years to come when old plays are discussed, hi3 memory will be green. On the stage Hajj made an instantaneous hit wherever "Kismet" was played; the screen version will do that and more, for, on the screen Hajj has an opportunity far beyond the limitations of the speaking stage, and Skinner's interpretation of this role in the screen version will stand for a long time to come as the finest study in character work that the moving picture cameras ever recorded. MURRAY One of the finest actors on the screen was engaged by Norman Dawn for one of the most difficult character roles ever written. The actor is Thomas Jefferson: the story is "White Youth," in which Edith Roberts is starring and which is now showing at the Murray Theatre; the role is that of Francois Cayetane, a dissolute fop, a French Creole by birth, the survivor of three wives and, in his own estimation, the same gay Lothario at three score and ten that he was fifty years before. Thomas Jefferson is the sion of the Did You Ever Take Two Pills ? Not at the same time, but awhile apart? Were they the same kind of pills? Do you know that it would have been better for you if they had been different? Then you wouldn't have kept hammering on one organ. There is only one BEST way to take a laxative and that is all found in a fcinjile box of "Just-One." There are 20 DIFFERENT KINDS of laxatives in every box of "Just-One." late Joseph Jefferson, ode of the finest actors the English-speaking stage has ever known. Thomas began his stage career in his father's campanles at an early age and after the elder Jefferson passed away, he turned the country in the plays made famous by his beloved sire, such as "Rip Van Winkle," "Lend Me Five Shillings" and "The Rivals." He has also appeared in support of many of the leading Broadway stars. About four years ago he decided to locate In Southern California and occasionally appear in the films if the part was sufficiently ' interesting. Among the productions in which he has appeared on the screen are "Hands Up," "The Spenders," "Sis Hopkins," "Tarzan of the Apes," "The Beloved Liar," in which he was featured by Universal, "The Fencing Master," "Lombard!, Ltd.." "The Splendid Hazard." "The Forged Bride" and many others. MURRAY VAUDEVILLE You won't be disappointed, mister, If you go to the Murray the first half of this week. A variety of good vaudeville acts are presented, including comedy, music and a novel feature horsemanship. This combination is at once unusual and entertaining. Amid a whirl of dust and the smell of the farm, the five cowboys and two cowgirls in the wild west act present a smattering of comedy intermingled with lassoing feats. One norse which walks upon its hind legs receives merited applause from the audience. Comedy is introduced by a negro mammy very anxious to dodge the "wisked" heels of a frisky "hoes." With but one exception, the costumes worn are of western style. The straight represents a westerner who has just returned from life in a city. To see horses rushing across the stage floor of the Murray is "something different" The curtain is rung upon a scene of wild chaos Willie Lang is the favorite of the bill. Richmond audiences rarely fail to respond heartily to good music. When Willie shakes a "nasty stick" upon a xylophone, giving difficult works in composition, then swinging into popu lar tunes, he caries with him the ad miration of his hearers. Not content with his usual numbers, he is forced tn rptnrn In rpunnnce in pnrnrpfl. W nique and all of the high sounding phrases that go with it, but we do know a good man when we hear him. from a certain point of view, features the underworld dancing of Cook and Valdare. Although we have never had ( the opportunity to view this kind of dancing before and we've seen several varieties -we will admit that it meets all that one's imagination would expect. DELEGATES CONSULTED IN STUDY OF CABLES ' (By Associated Press) WASHINGTON. Jan. 11. Temporarily deflecting its inquiry from the controversy between the state depart-! ment and the Western Union Telegraph company, the senate committee considering cable legislation today continued its general study of cable communications, with Walter S. Rogers, an American delegate to the international communications conference, called to appear. In addition to charges by Newcomb Carlton, president of the Western Union, that the British government was exercising surveillance over the American cable business, the committee session yesterday was enlivened by a direct contradiction by Acting Secretary Davis of an assertion by Mr. Carlton that the state department had called upon the Cuban government to For That COLJED' TTMtlra in a sick-bed. bUr doctor bins and sometimes life Itself are prtoea people pay for neglect of colds every year, w ny tare cmuot t When yon sniffle, sDeesa and suspect a cold, ret a box of Uctitnlna; tive Quinine Tablets right oft and stop the cold within 24 hoars. MURRETTE Theatre Beautiful "Where the Stars Twinkle First" A Card of Importance to Patrons Every now and then it becomes our pleasant duty to announce to the patrons of the Murrette an unusual and wonderful treat which stands out prominently above the average run of presentations. Such an event is now about to occur here, and owing to the experience of "In Old Kentucky" we desire to serve ample warning to our patrons of an opportunity that should not be neglected. For years Otis Skinner has appeared on the stage in "Kismet." Robertson-Cole now present this drama far more extensively than the stage could present it in a big ten-reel photodrama. This production cost five times as much to produce as the average photodrama and requires far more time to project. Naturally you would expect the price to be advanced. Anderson paid 75c minimum to see it. Larger cities up to f 2.00, and never below 50c anywhere. Murrette patrons may see this extraordinary production at regular Murrette prices. In return for this, your appreciation can he shown by attending the matinees, or the lait performance at night, beginning at 9:00 p. m., to permit us to accommodate all that should see this extraordinary feature opening Wednesday matinee.
