A SWEETHEART AT THIRTY Th Story of a Woman's Transformation BY MARION RUBINCAM
HIS SUSPICIONS. Synopsis of Preceding Chapters. When Enid is 35 she wakes to the fact that she is a homely, hopeless old maid. Her past is barren, her future blank. She lives with her brother Jim. his wife Esther, and three grown children. Laura, James and Violet. Only Violet believes in her. Violet's desire to go to college rous Enid from her lethargy, she draws out her small amount of money, and they go to the city. Here both suddenly realize the possibilities of life. When they go back to the country for the summer they are changed Enid growing young and pretty, Violet maturing into a charming girl. Enid refuses Mark Upjohn, a girlhood lover, now a widower, who suddenly wants to marry her. Violet is unhappily in love with Bud Pearsoll. When they come back to town Bud is with a wild crowd of men. Enid meets Bud's employer, Francis Meade, at a dance he gives for his employes. Chapter 73. We run along smoothly in life, in a little narrow rut that may , be pleasant or unpleasant and then we suddenly come to a turning point. Each turning point i3 a crisis sometimes we do not even know we have passed it until we find ourselves running along in an entirely different sort of rut. There had been several of these turning points in my life in the last year and a half. The very first, i think, was that early spring day in the country when Esther made some remark about my being a hopeless old maid of 35. That awakened me, and started me on the road that was to lead ultimately to my salvation. The next perhaps was when I was sufficiently awake to the possibilities life in the city offered us, to pack up and take this little flat It was for me a daring step, but it lifted us from the ranks of those who exist somehow in back rooms of boarding houses, and placed us among those who enjoy life in a charming surrounding. The third, and perhaps the greatest awakening, was the one that came this evening when I danced to that slow, appealing music with this much admired man. The first time, my lost youth woke up and demanded a chance for itself. The second time, my will power woke up it was the beginning of a break away from Esther. This evening my soul awoke. I wanted to talk, desperately so, but I could not think of a word to say. Looking about the dancers, I saw them at their ease, the women smiling up into the faces of the men, with laughter and words that came so easily to their lips. How did they do it? What good, after all, was all my striving for self improvement, if it left me tongue-tied at the moment 1 needed self -possession most? We were nearly through the waltz. I looked up at Francis Meade, determined to say something, anything, to break this uncomfortable silence. He

Thousands of housewives have found that they can save two-thirds of the money usually spent for cough preparations,' bv using the well-known old recipe for makinz conch syrup at home. It is simple and cheap but it has no equal for prompt results. It takes right hoM of a cough and gives immediate relief, usually stopping an ordinary cough in 21 hours or less. Get 2V ounces of Pinex from any druggist, pour it into a pint bottle and add plain granulated sugar syrup to make a full pint. If you prefer, use clarified molasses, honey, or corn syrup, instead of sugar syrup. Either way, it tastes Rood, keeps perfectly, and lasts a family a long time. It's truly astonishing how quickly it acts, penetrating through every air passage of the throat and lungs loosens and raises the phlegm, soothes and heals the membranes, and gradually but surely the annoying throat tickle and dreaded cough disappear entirely. Nothing better for bronchitis, spasmodic croup, hoarseness or bronchial asthma. Pinex is a special and highly concentrated compound of genuine Norway pine extract, known the world over for its healing effect on the membranes. Avoid disapointment by asking your druggist for 2V2 ounces of Pinex" with full directions and don't accept anything else. was looking down at me and he smiled, and I smiled up at him in return. "I'm glad you like dancing enough not to want to talk all through it," he said. "Personally, the rytum and the sheer pleasure of being in tune with it is so great a delight that I dislike carrying on a political discussion, or even conversation about the weather, at the same time." So I had been saved! I liked not to talk when dancing, but the others were chattering merrily, and I felt that I should do so too. "Ill leave you with my mother," he said, when the music stopped. "But I want to talk to you, so I will come back soon." Mrs. Meade made room on the couch
'and I sat beside her. Violet and Bud
came to look for me, and I Introduced them. And presently they were off again to dance. I could see Mr. Meade in the doorway greeting newcomers. "It's charming of your son to give this dance for his office," I said. "He has had so much pleasure getting it up," Mrs. Meade told me. "Francis believes he should know well everyone who works for him, and that they should know each other. It is his pet theory. He is going to do this every year." "Ah well, Francis is an incorrigible optimist," said a very attractive girl on the other side of Mrs. Meado. I turned to look at her. "You must know Miss Miller," Mrs. Meade said, putting one hand affec tionately on the girl's arm. We greeted each other. Miss Miller was one of the most striking women I have ever seen. She quite took my breath away when I first looked at her. She had hair as gold as Violet'B, fashionably waved and dressed, and round brown eyes that held an eternal question in them except when they crinkled up in a smile. She had a round, red little mouth and a complexion dazzling for its red and white. Her nose might have been called "pug," yet it suited her face very well. She was dressed in a gown made entirely of gold cloth, softened by black tulle, and she carried a great black feather faji. She had that wonderful gift of bring always able to say the right thing when she wanted. "Ah, cheer ami," she cried gaily as Francis Meade came up. "I am so glad to see you again. You were waltzing with this charming lady on my right when we came in." This with a smile at me. "Whenever I see you it is in a new light," she went on, unfurling her huge fan. "Tonight it is as shall I say philanthropist? dining the humble office boy " "How little you know of life, Cecile," he laughed. "The humble office boy takes mad chances in stock where I never take any. and makes

and loses his hundreds as nonchalantly as you purchase a gown." VI assure you I purchase no gowns In a nonchalant manner, she answer ed, smiling up in his eyes. "My gowns are as serious to me as your stocks, and I am sure they are more decorative. Are you dancing with me, dear man?" She rose with her merry, ready smile, and they went off. For an instant I. felt a little pang of what was it? It was a sharp pain through my heart, that came when he put bis arm around her and they slid off through the maze work, in comparison to this quick-witted little lady, this product of wealth and leisure, travel and opportunity? One thing more happened that hurt me, or rather worried me, that evening. Mr. Meade was standing near Bud. "George, you look uncommonly well in that suit," he said. "Do I, sir? made it." Bud answered. He named New York's best known tailor. Then he turned a little red suddenly and looked as though he had not spoken. Into Mr. Meade's eyes flashed suddenly a curious, hard look suspicion. Suspicion of what, I wondered, a little alarmed.

Heart Problems
Dear Mrs. Thompson: I am a young married lady with two children, and need your advice badly. My girl cousin was married In August, and I have visited her several times. I never met her husband until they were married. When visiting them, as they only have one bed, I have had to sleep with them. My husband gets furious when I do this and threatens me, as he says it Is not good taste end shows illbreeding. I claim he is jealous and told him I would leave him if he could, not look at it differently. He has been kind to me always and I have had many men friends, and he never objected as long as I kept my place, but says that he can not allow me to do this. We agreed to leave it to you. Will you please advise us through your column Do not be afraid to say just what you think. HUSBAND AND WIFE. Since your husband objects seriously to your sleeping with your cousin and her husband, I think you should conform to his wishes in the matter and not visit her again under such circumstances. If she lives in an
other town, you can get a room at a hotel, or 6leep on a bed made on the floor in your cousin's house. Many respectable people have slept under the conditions you have mentioned. In the pioneer days communities would hire a school teacher, and would take turns giving him board and lodging. In many of the small wood huts the teacher found it necessary to sleep with his host and hostess. I agree with your husband that nowadays it is not good taste and if the situation can possibly be avoided it should be. Dear Mrs. Thompson: I have been keeping company with & young lady ten months. We have quarreled. She is 22 and I am 24. I have bought a wrist-watch for her. Can you advise me what to do with the watch. I don't need the watch. THANKS. Perhaps the jeweler will exchange
the watch for something that will be useful to you. If not, the only thing you can do is to sell the watch your
self. You might advertise the fac that you have a lady's wrist watch fa sale. ' ' " "

Gray hair, however handsome,,, denotes advancing age. We all know the advantages of a youthful appearance. Your hair is your charm. It makes or mars the face. When it fades, turns gray, and looks streaked, just a few applications of Sage Tea and Sulphur enhances its appearnace a hundredfold. . Don't stay gray! Look young! Either prepare the recipe at home or get from any drug store a bottle of "Wyeth's Sage and Sulphur Compound," which is merely the old-time
recipe improved by the addition of
other ingredients. Thousands of folks recommend this ready-to-use preparation, because if " darkens the hair beautifully; besides, no one can possibly tell, as it darkens so naturally and evenly. You moisten a sponge or soft brush with it, drawing this through the hair, taking one small strand at a time. By morning the gray hair disappears; after another application or two its natural color is restored, and it becomes thick, glo.sy and lustrous, and you appear years younger. Advertisement.
