WOMEN PROTESTING AGAINST INCREASES IN AMERICAN ARMY

(By Associated Press) . .. WASHINGTON, Jan. 11A house military, committee's program today Included a protest '. meeting against increases in the .military establishment, arranged by the Women's Peace society, and with women as the witnesses to be heard. Prepared statements outlined the views of each. The total current army budget, Mrs. W. Thompson Burch, presented as a "business woman," said was $845,000,. f00 or four times as great as the 1916 appropriation. : If business men knew the figures, 6he added, she did not know what they were thinking about not to have come to Washington in such numbers to- protest, "as to block our traffic." , OPPOSES ARMIES. Miss Ethel M. Smith, representing the American Federation of Labor, said large standing armies meant militarism and tyranny and that the workers "who have most to lose and, therefore, the most to guard," feared militarism "more than they fear invasion, by a foreign power." "Nations, like individuals, use armies and guns largely because they have . them," declared " Miss Matilda Lindsay of the National Woman's Trade Union league. "If they do not have them they will not settle disputes without bloodshed." Mrs. Harriet Conner Brown, of the Woman's International league for peace and freedom, demanded "much more drastic cuts" in military and naval appropriations, "than are contemplated by the appropriations committee." Current appropriations, she added, showed only 12 per cent not devoted to past or future wars, as "congress throws our money away on war and preparation for war." "We protest against such a state of affairs," Mrs. Brown said. "We will not longer endure the strain."

No Evening Weddings In Pittsburgh Church (By Associated Press.) PITTSBURG, Jan. 11. Evening weddings at Calvary Protestant Episcopal church here are banned, under an order of Rev. E. J. Van Ettan, the pastor, made, public today. This action conforms with Rev. Ettan's New Year's sermon, when in review of the times he paid much atentlon to evening gowns worn by women. He commented on the "lack of decorum often manifested," and said that some of the gowns did not conform with the sacred character of marriage. Indiana Coal Output Is 23 ,000 ,000 Tons (By Associated Press) INDIANAPOLIS, Ind., Jan. 1. Coal mined in Indiana during 1920 totaled 25,310,248 tons, according to tentative reports received from 218 standard shipping mines of the state, and compiled by the Indiana Coal Trade bureau. It is estimated that when complete reports from all of the 310 standard shipping mines in Indiana are in the total, production will exceed 23,000,000 tons. These figures do not include tonnage from wagon mines of the state.
