CHILDREN NOURISHED BY LUNCHES OF MILK

Undernourishment of children attending the Whitewater public school is becoming less pronounoed since milk lunches have been given those below normal, said Principal James Morgan, Saturday. Several weeks ago the social service bureau undertook the work of providing a pint of milk a day for each child attending the school, who is not up to standard in weight and health. One half pint of milk is given th

child in the middle of the morning, i and the remaining half pint in the' afternoon. At that time, said Mr. Morgan, about 15 per cent of the pupils were below normal; now the percentage is much less. One little j pirl who was said to have tuberculosis la a mild form, gained two pounds the first week. ' No charge is made the students for! the milk if they are not able to pay. I The milk is imbibed through a straw, i Mr. Morgan said that it would be! unwise to give more than a pint of j milk a day, as it would interfere with !

a child's regular meal. rumoTgives (Continued from Page One.) Haute, who is a coal operator, probably will be on the committee on mines and mining, although he may not be the chairman of it. Importance Is Doubt. , While the makeup of the committees is important it is difficult to tell just

which particular commitee or commit

tees will be of the most important. For example a bill relating to corporations may go to any one of several committees. In this connection the committees on corporations, rights and privileges and the two judiciary committees are all important. And of course most any measure relating to the increase of fees or salaries may go to the ways and means committee as well as the committee on fees and salaries. It is probable that a great many such measures will go to the ways and means committee. The committee to which any particular bill is assigned is selected by the speaker or the lieutenant governor. Often the authors of measures request that they be assigned to a certain committee. Lobbyists Alert. An example of the interest that the

representatives of corporations take

in the committee makeup is .well illustrated by the mental perturbation of a certain railroad man in Indianapolis when he heard the report the

other day that Ray V. Gibbens of An

derson was to have the chairmanship of the committee on railroads in the house. Gibbens is an interurban car motorman for the Union Traction company, and the excitement of the railroad man when he heard the Gibbens' report may easily be imagined. He went to others who were interested in legislation and told them it was an outrage and it is understood that he waited on Speaker McClure to find out something about the proposed Gibhen annointmpnt. As tar as is known

he got no information from Mr. McClure. In fact there seemed to be no one who got any Information from Mr. McClure on the matter of committee appointments. Organize This Week Leaders in the legislature do not believe that a great deal of work will be accomplished before the latter part of the week. After the announcement of committee appointments has been made it will be necessary for the committees to get together and organize and this usually requires a day or so. Then the bills must be introduced and some of them must make their way to the committees before any actual work can be done. According. to program one of the first tasks to be taken up will be consideration of the appropriation bills.

It may be that the senate nnance committee and the house .ways and means committee will be holding joint sessions on this measure by the middle of the week or at least by the last of the week. It is said that the legislative visiting cdmmlttee has his measure well in hand and there will be little delay. Some of the Republicans who have been reviewing the work of the last week profess to be very well satisfied with the outlook. They say that while there was a sharp contest over the speakership and some feeling noticeable immediately after the contest was settled they believe that after the session has been under way a few days the work of the house will be marked by complete harmony. They base this

view on their belief that Governor McCray will not attempt to use the big stick. ' Some of the friends of McCray say that while he exercised his power in the matter of the selection of a speaker, he will not continue to attempt to hold a controlling hand over the legislature. With this situation existing, they say, there will be no reason for any anti-McCray or anti-speaker organization in the house. However after Mr. McClure has made his principal committee appointments and they have been announced there will be much more definite information on which to base conclusions as to future harmony. In the senate Speaker Branch is counted on to keep things -going in a

harmonious manner. It has developed since the caucuses were held that some of the close friends of Mr. McCray were responsible for the election of Senator Ratts as floor leader, and for the defeat of Senator Nejdl. Senator Nejdl is known as a spirited fighter. It was he who made an open fight en Governor Goodrich at the special session last summer. But at that time Lieutenant, Governor Bush who was presiding over the senate also was at outs with Governor Goodrich. Friends of Mr. Branch, say that while he will not attempt to dictate what the senate does he will nevertheless control the parliamentary tactics with a firm hand and will not brook delaying tactics in legislation. Branch it is said will not only act as presid

ing officer but will give close personal attention to the clerical work of the senate. It is recalled that when Hugh T. Miller was the presiding officer of the senate he always knew more about the

status of any particular bill that might !

be brought up than did the senator who introduced it. He kept a close eye on all of the detailed proceedings of the senate. At the time Miller was the presiding officer of the senate. Branch was the speaker of the house and the degree of co-operation they employed in their work is even yet a subject of comment among the old time members of the legislature.
