.r j. i nr. , , ,, WORKMEN IH ITALYS RECEIVE HIGH VAGES BREAD PRICE SOARS t - (By Associated Press) ROME, Jan. 5. The Italian govern ment is facing an almost unsolvable problem in the Question of the cost of the nation's bread. During and Bince the war the price of bread was kept down artificially, the government paying $1,000,000,000 and even - lately $1,250,000,000 yearly as the difference between the actual cost of the flour and the prlc paid by the consumer. The price of a kilo (2 1-5 pounds) of ordinary bread used to be equivalent to nine cents, or of a finer quality, 11 or 12 cents; now the price for the same quantity of inferior bread is 21 cents a kilo, and the Italian working classes utterly refuse to pay the balance which would increase the cost to them to 40 cents or even half a dollar a kilo. Italian workjngmen are ' now paid wages which compare favorably with the salaries doled out to officers in the army or heads of government departments and do not hesitate to pay enormous sums for wine, tobacco and luxuries for . their table. A mason, blacksmith or cabinet-maker used to consider himself well paid with less than a dbllar day. Now they earn $6.50, $7 and $S a day, and look forward to having more in the future. RICHMOND PALLADIUM AND
A Winter MRS. F. W. STEVENS I Enroute across the state we made aj special point to visit the famous Silver Springs. They are subterranean; you go out in a glass bottom boat to view they. They flow out Into the river at the enprmous rate of 300 million gallons per day. The oarsman drops In light fragments of tin to show the strength of the current. This stream is in the midst of truly tropical verdure. Excursions on canals and rivers were not so attractive to us as to many tourists. One told how he went over to Lake Okechobee from Fort Lauderdale and only counted 288 alligators in the canal all about them. They claim that they and rattlers are harmless unless attacked, .but we chose a safety tone from these horrid creatures. St. Petersburg was enjoyed as well as any place in Florida. The city is beautifully laid out; has superb drives all about and well deserves the name of "Sunshine City." They offer week ly prizes if for a single day old Sol fails to 6how his face. They have a cplendld central park, where the serv ices of a magnificent band help while away the otherwise tedious hours of the tourist. Twelve thousand dollars was paid for last seasons music. At these afternoon and evening concerts you make friends with everybody. The postoffice in St. Petersburg is a unique structure. The boses and windows pre on fine outside corridors, where are glass top tables nil about. A long line of folks before "General Delivery" give3 you an idea of the multitude of visitors there. Friendship breathes freely in St. Petersburg. We left there by another route than that of way cross. We came north through Ocala. We had the company of Carolina cousins, aiding greatly in the pleasant passing of our winter in Florida. Visit AsheviMe. On the way home we visited Asheville. North Carolina, which region they take pride in naming the "Land of the Sky." in FlorI3a every direction. The beautiful city enjoys a perfect all-the-year-round climate. A week here was one of peculiar pleasure, a former student residing ihere contributing greatly to our happiness in a multitude of ways. Our plan to motor from Knoxville, Tenn., through Kentucky proved impracticable. We were routed away from home up the Shenandoah valley to Maryland, but this round-about trip richly paid for all the delay we experienced. The forests .through Virginia were gloriously beautiful with dogwood and redbud In profusion, then the apple orchards and peach trees were donned in their prettiest, blush ing with bloom never was our path-1 way more literally strewn with flowers. "There's where the birds warble sweet in the springtime." No wonder the old darkey cried. "Carry me back to old Vlrginny." What more supremely happy closing could have come for our winter away! ( Describes Sights. I As we near the end or the account i we recall the many points we are omitting. St. Augustine, with its oldest house in America Tampa, the largest city of Florida, its bay and immense shipping facilities and the wonderful trees and flora of the state. The palms we specially admired were the Royal; we would walk about them and look up at their majestic trunks. In their stately magnificence they are use some splendid statue, or monument. We can sincerely say, we reverenced them. Of course we frequented the cocoanut palms, the kodak caught Mr. Stephens "shaking the nut," the sign of the tourist another in a futile effort to do the impossible, knock one off the tree. ingly variegated crotons all captivated our attention. ' Little Ben took us to Florida, the same dependable car that brought us from California. He prided himself on running there on some of Indiana air and bringing back some tropical climate, his special boast was that the cost of the trip was but little more than if he had staid at home. One very cool night returning we rode to the very foot of. the Cumberlands( in Maryland) before we could locate a stopping place. We were accorded the privilege of a sheltered spot at a splendid apple plantation. We thought we were favored, but the owner and his lovely wife would not be content till we accepted their pressing invitation to come within' to their hospitable board and generous guest room. We had been treading all along the wide avenues of southern welcome, here we found a veritable inner door to a home of luxury and comfort.
