Preble Planters, Warehousemen" ' Expect Dull Tobacco Market
A dull tobacco market with generally lower prices, Is the expectation of planters and warehousemen of Preble county. "We have about 466 cases of old tobacco not yet delivered' to the buyers and 2.500 cases of the 1918 and 1919 crops", said a warehouseman of Lewisburg. "Another house has 4,000 cases, and I think there are 6,000 cases in storage or handling at Lewisburg. With such a large amount on hand, and with money hard to get, probably the 1920 crop wDl move rather slowly. I know that the eight houses at Germantown also are full." . Two crops were reported to have been sold on Tuesday, one for 11 cents, in the .southeastern part of the county, ond another near Lewisburg for 8 cents. The last was only a small crop and he owner had to have money. Express Disappointment. Disappointment was expressed by a farmer In the office of I. C. Albert, tobacco buyer of Lewisburg. "This crop cost us a lot, and we would like to get at least as much as we spent on it." lie said, "but it looks as if we would not." Th same opinion was voiced bjr R. H. Renner, a planter north of Eaton. "We had to pay $5 a day for our labor last year. Many farmers have payI ments to make out of their tobacco, at have anything left for themselves." Jesse Sherer, who was president of the Tobacco Growers association in B. C. Gaiser Will Manage Centerville Association B. C. Gaiser has accepted the position as manager of the newly formed Livestock Shippers' association at Centerville. Some stock is listed for shipment the latter part of next week. Shippers are urged to list stock at once. It is exDected that announcement ! ii ill K molA tVilc u-oalr nt I.iv. Stock Committee of Fifteen by President J. R. Howard of the American Farm Bureau. This committee was authorized at a conference of representatives of all organizations Interested in the marketing of the live rtock which was held in Chicago October 8. It is the duty of this committee to determine the steps of marketing which should be undertaken by organized producers and its work will probably be similar to that of the Grain Marketing Committee of Seventeen l The establishment of farmers' co-op erative commission firms at leading markets will probably be one of the first considerations of this committee The conference in October unanimously favored such co-operative firms. Turkish Officials Deny Negotiations CONSTANTINOPLE. .Tan. 4. Statements by Premier Lloyd George in the British House of Commons on December 22 to the effect that the Turkish government had attempted to negotiate regarding the control of Constantinople were formally denied here today by Grand Vizier Tewfik Pasha, pnd Sefa Bay. foreign minister. Mr. Lloyd George is reported to have asserted that the Turkish government had proposed that if a guarantee should be given that Constantinople should not. be taken from the Turks, tliey Would boar the loss of Smyrna and Thrace. Boston Unemployment Unequaled Since 1914 'By Associated Press) BOSTON. Jan. 3. Conditions of unemployment unequalled tince 1914 were reported today by the public employment, office of the state department of labor and industries. Applicants for jobs were even more numerous in December than in any corresponding month in the last six years. .Requests for help from employers fell off 52 percent from the previous December and 0 percent from November. 1918, says that the acreage was decreased in 1920 to between 33 and 40 percent of the pre-war acreage. This estimate is substantiated by other authorities in the county.'- Ain report a heavier yield per acre, hdwever, and a better quality than' usual. " Due To Inflation.' ' The manager . of a large warehouse attributes the drop in., price to inflation during war days. "The tobacco industry was Just like several others" he said. "Some men in It,' and some outsiders looked for government regulation, and so they speculated on -the chance that production would-be limited or the price go up. "Instead, with a large number of growers gone, we raised more tobacco than before. But the harm had been done."- Buyers offered all kinds of money, unjustifiable prices, and a great deal of damage was done the industry. Now we are getting back to normal prices, deflation, and it hurts." It was learned that one house was offering some high priced 1917 tobacco, which it still had on hand, at 20 percent less than athe buying price. Jesse Sherer paid: "We dont know where we are now. All we can do i3 wait and see how things turn out later" Ira F. Izor, a farmer east of Eaton, said: "Nobody has sold, because there have been no offers, and I have not heard anyone speculating as to prices. The growers' are waiting to see what the buyers will offer."
BURLEY TOBACCO CROP IS GROWN IN PREBLE Burley tobacco was grown In Preble county in 1920 it was discovered following an inquiry into Preble county tobacco conditions. -This is the first instance of Burley being grown in this region according to Joseph .Glick. of West Alexandria to whom the grower George Reiner of West Elk ton. had brought a sample. " Reiner reported that the tobacco had been grown on newly turned ground rich and black as coal, which together with the care he gave it, probably accounts for his success In growing Burley so far from it's home. "The market is quiet in all grades." said Glick, who is a tobaeco buyer. "I may send out 20 letters,- for instance, to the houses and I will get only one or two replies. No one is mentionins any prices on Miami tobacco until the market opens up." FIVE WAYNE GROWERSFINISH CORN CONTEST The report of the Wayne county participants in the state five-acre contest shows yields of over 77 bushels per acre. The contest was started and supervised by Purdue, through the county agentr. In Wayne count y there were 13 entrants, but only five finished. They were Joseph S. Helm" of Richmond, Albert Ferris, of Milton, f!aar Eliason of Centerville. Harry F. Caldwell of rear Connersville, an 1 Benton Wissler, of Milton. Helms was high man with 77.9 bushels per acre, closely followed by Ferris with a yield of 77.8 bushels. Several entrants had a good star', but hail and other weather conditions cut down their yields so much that they did not care to be checked in on the final returns.
