HOUSING SHORTAGE 111 GERMANY CAUSES RATIONING OF ROOMS

(By Associated Prs) CASSELL, Germany, Jan. 3. - In Ibis city of 170.000 population 5,400 persons are without homes, according to the report of the City Housing Commission, which l "rationing" rooming houses and hotels m an effort to shelter everybody during the winter months. Because of the great shortage of; houses, due to suspension of building . operations during the war, it has been " necessary to house large numbers toraetimes in a single room. Regardless of ability to pay, fce citizens now are compelled to occupy only such room as is absolutely essential and the extra space is apportioned among the homeless. Police Keep Records. The "housing problem," while under the jurisdiction of a special commission, really is controlled by the police who keep a record of dwellings and the number of occupants and report their findings to the commission. The police have discovered many attempts to evade housing regulations. One wealthy woman, who before the war had a fine house and many servants, moved into less pretentious quarters an apartment of ten rooms. Being a widow without children she was entitled to only one room, but to evade the regulations 6he invited many of her old friends into her apartment, and there they lived, without charge. The police reported her apartment was "fully .occupied" and took no further action. Owing to "the high price of building material and the labor shortage, unre lieved in spite of the announcement that there is a large, undiminishing number of unemployed, building operak tions are virtually at a standstill. ' Unless there is an exodus of the homeless from Cassoll, the authorities say thero will be much suffering this winter from cold and hunger. The Theatres WASHINGTON Bryant Washburn has in "A Full House," a new Paramount comedy drama, another one of those delightfully conceived comedy' roles which have brought him such a high measure of success.. "A Full House" was scenarized by Alice Eyton from' the famous Fred Jackson stage farce. It 1 will be presented at the Washington theatre for two days beginning Tuesday. In the production Mr. Washburn ap- " pears s George .Howell, a young at torney who gets into most amazing difficulties when he leaves his bride for A few hours to go on a business trip. This Journey has a most amusing maze of complications involving another man's love letters, stolen jewelry, policemen and thieves. Mr. Washburn's impersonation is a finely ' drawn characterization that brings a continual stream of laughs. Opposite the comedian is Lois Wilson, the pretty and popular leading woman. It has been some time since Miss Wilson has appeared in a WashFOR BURNING. Hazel How ell, Vera Lewis, Catherine Wallace, J Lotue wuiiams, jonn vvna, z.. wan Covington, Frank Jonasson. MURRETTE That the cleverness and wit of good musical comedy can be adequately transferred to the screen was proven at he Murrette theatre last evening when "Oh Lady Lady" opened for a Whree days run with Bebe Daniels as the star. Harrison Ford ana waiter Hiers in support. "Oh Lady Lady," it will be remembered, is the very suc cessful Bolton and Wodehouse productJon which scored such a very treraendous hit only a few years ago. By adding new scenes and taking advantage of the wider range of the films Edith Kennedy, the scenarist, has really added to the play's fun possibilities. She has "created a laugh concoction that starts on high speed and stays locked in that ' gear from j the first reel till the final fadeout. J Miss Daniels is splendid as the gawky country girl whose transformation into a famous chorus beauty brings innocent entanglement as a supposed "vampire." Of course the rotund Walter Hiers is a delight as the serious-minded young man who fears that his one time country sweetheart is going to complicate things by brfnging a breach of promise 6uit just as he is about to marry a very pretty and conventional young lady. - Harrison Ford is likable, as usual, in the straight male lead of the play. He has been making an exceptional hit in Realart pictures recently, appearing also with Wanda Hawley in "Miss Hobbs" and 'Food for Scandal." MURRAY Buck Jones in the William Fox production "Just Pals," a drama of the wheat country from a story by John McDermott. is announced as the feature attraction at the Murray Theatre beginning Monday. The scenes are laid in a small town on the border-line of the wheat and cattle countries. It deals with the lives of a dejected "nobody," a boy waif and a beaujtiful school teacher, who become united through circumstances that constitute what has been described as a most appealing story. Buck Jones is seen in the part of Bim, the "nobody" a ne'er-do-well who at heart is courageous and chivalrous. Jack Ford is the director and the cast includes familiar names. Suburban HOLT,ANSBURG.
