WASHINGTON. The friskiness of American widows abroad (that is. some of them) was admirably displayed by Billie Burke in her latest Paramount picture, "The Frisky Mrs. Johnson," which was presented before a delighted audience, at the Washington theatre Thursday. Her characterization of Belle Johnson proved her versatility as a screen player of the finest merit, for she was as artistic in her serious moments as she was delightful in the lighter phases of her role. The picture was admirably pro
duced by Edward Dillon and the sup-1 port given Miss Burke was excellent The picture provides some highly relishable screen entertainment. It is received with applause at every showing. MURRETTE. . Iva Brown, who makes her first appearance in , Mermaid Comedies in "Dynamite" in which Lloyd Hamilton, of "Ham and Bud" fame, is starred, is an English girl. She was bora in London, but her parents must have seen in their black-haired child a future motion picture favorite, for when Iva' was quite young they moved to Los Angeles. In due time her beauty won recognition. She lias appeared recently with Al St. John in "Cleaning Up" and "Ship Ahoy," and has Just Joined the Mermaid organiation, a company formed a few, months ago with the ambition of producing superior two-reejlaughter-makers. Miss Brown nas the distinction of being the second leading woman in Mermaids, which are produced month, ly, the series starring Hamilton, and the other produced by Jack White and featuring Jimmie Adams. Marvel Rea appeared in both "A Fresh Start," with Adams, and in "Duck Inn," with "Ham." She will be seen again in the fourth delease, "Nonsense." "Dynamite," which is said to supply a new sort of explosive laughter, comes to the Murrette theatre Friday. MURRAY
Helen Ferguson, playing opposite William Russell in "The Challenge of the Law," now showing at the Murray Theatre, doesn't understand a word of any language save English, and is still undecided whether to be shocked or to laugh at an incident that occurred
during the filming of "The Challenge of the Law." She was in a scene with three men of the company Robert Klein, who is French; D. I. Mitsoras, who is Greek, and Fred Malatesa, who is Italian. During the scene, which Included a scuffle, a window in the set was accidentally broken by somebody and each of the three men fell to excusing himself or blaming one of the others. They got a bit excited in a friendly wayf in trying to tell how it happened. The more they talked the more they
lapsed into their native tongues, and1 soon there was a general Jumble of French, Italian and Greek of which Miss Ferguson could not understand a word, though it was all showered over her head. x .. When-Scott Dunlap, the director, had quelled the tumult, the men laughed and Miss Ferguson doesn't yet know whether the dispute was all a Joke or not MURRAY VAUDEVILLE Well! Here we are again. Our verdict this time Is that three of the four acts now showing at the Murray theatre are good; the other, the first, is not bad, only not so good. Barber and Jackson, man and woman "Mirth and Melody" skit, the last on the bill, is a scream from the viewpoint of well rendered comedy. One of the focusing marks is the young man. Rather tall? No. Decidedly so. We guess he's nearer seven than six feet from the boards. His partner, a nicely costumed young lady, is especially attractive from the bottom of her "porosknit" or is it "peek-a-boo?" hose, to the apex of her young bejng. His song, "The Man That Invented Near-beer had a Poor eye in Judging Distance," proved a sure fire fling, and it hit on all six cylinders. One of his shots at Wilson's 14 points, and another at the league of nations, drew great applause. His extreme heighth renders several of his antics a genuine touch of tfle comic. Now perhaps we'll say something Just a mite unpopular. It must be
said! The "Morrell Girl Sextette." consisting of six ladies highly accom-

plished in the art of good vocal and instrumental music, are worthy a place on the best vaudeville stage, but we
would like to have at least one of
their vocal numbers substituted by "American" lyric, with all the good points and failings therein. Not necessarily Jazz, hardly that; only one good rolliclngj romping popular song. One that drives the blues from the grouch, and causes the cynic to smile. Now you understand? No more lavish display of costumes, nor element of refinement is to be found in current vaudeville than that exhibited by those entertaining young ladies. Jf this act did not get the proper amount of appreciation, our' only reason can be found in the fact that local theatreho Htrht vein in vaudeville.
You've heard piano-accordions?!
Well, the youngs lady in the second act knows how to play one. Opening with the "Stars and Stripes Forever," she continues to thrill one with her wizardly management of the complicated key board. At first, we didn't know she could sing, but when after playing one or two selections, she sang with a strong full vibriant voice, we were delightfully surprised. "Frank and Mae Warner" opens the bill. Frank's fancy stepping is good, but isn't it queer that the same antics performed by a woman member of a team, clad In a somewhat different costume, lowers the standards. It may be a feat to be able to throw one's femur Joints out of place, but it's hardly becoming a young lady.
The act is opened by a song, "Healthy, Wealthy and Wise." William Russell In "The Challenge of the Law," Is the film feature. . ' , . Marv. ;

Combine Against Capital
(By Associated Press) BUENOS AIRES, Dec. 31. The Argentine provinces are trying to form a combination against Buenos Aires, the capital city. Overtures are being conducted between political leaders of some of the provinces for the formation of a "League of Governors' for the purpose of uniting the northern agricultural districts of the country against Buenos Aires and other coastal districts. Some political observers see in this movement an attempt to return to the former division of the country politically into opposing sections while others maintain that it merely is an economic measure having as Its purpose the protection of the productive areas. To Argentina, the city of Buenos
Aires has the relation of the spout to jthe tea-kettle . and practically all of the wealth of the country pours through it It Is at once the financial. distributing and political capital of the country It is claimed by the leaders of the league Idea, the city has disproportionate power and the northern f-tates need union to offset this.
