PROPOSE STATE PARK FOR WAR MEMORIAL AND SCENIC BEAUTY

(By Associated Press) INDIANAPOLIS, Dec 29. State Parka should be established not only to preserve for future generations the beauty and scenic spots of the state out aiso as memorials for those killed In the world war. It is suggested in a pamphlet prepared by the state depart ment of conservation urging extension or tne state park system. The three parks now owned by the state are Turkey Run in Parke county, McCormick's Creek Park in Owen county and Clifty Falls Park in Jefferf on county. In suggesting parks as memorials the department's pamphlet says: "Possessed of only three state parks acquired during a period of four years and the only memorials to the state's centenary thinking Hoosiers every, where admit that a chain of state parka Will, not only be a suitable and appropriate memorial to the state's brave men and women participating in the world war but also a source of groat pleasure and profit to the living and the generations yet unborn. Time For Action. "Now before time has healed our wounds of war, when the Commonwealth is grateful to its heroes for deliverance from an autocratic reign that threatened, and while scenic spots are both available and cheap is admittedly the psyschological time for action. There is not a county in the tate but feels grateful to its sons and daughters for their noble and valiant service in the late war and is anxious to proclaim such feeling of gratitude in a material way. State parks are the logical medium for universal tribute. So far the cost of the state parks has been insignificant it is estimated. The state lias actually invested $56,000 In the park at Turkey Run. This includes what the state paid on the pur chase price and on improvements. About $30,000 of the purchase price was contributed by citizens who desired to co-operate in the establishment of a state park. McCormick's Creek Canyon Park cost the state $4,200. Citizens of Owen county and the city of Spencer contributed liberally toward its acquisition. So far Clifty Falls has not cost the state a cent- It was a gift of philanthropic citizens of Jefferson cocnty. The state expects to spend $20,000 on improvements. The Theatres

MURRAY. Shirley Mason, the charming Fox star who is to open at the Murray theatre on Thursday, in "Girl of My Heart." seems to be tryinjr to turn the pretty garden at her Hollywood home into a veritable zoo. Up to date she has two Pekinese dogs, one English bulldog, two turtles, one rabbit, three canaries and a chipmunk. She had two chipmunks that were caught for her at Big Bear. They were very tame though a bit unruly. Miss Mason has been trying to teach them some tricks. MURRETTE. And . now it is Eugene O'Brien in Oilskins and a sou-wester. His latest - offering from the Selznick studios, which is entitled "Broadway and Home", opens Wednesday at the Murrette theatre. In this John Lynch story Mr. O'Brien makes his appearance as Michael Strange, a young dweller by . the sea, who is heartily sick of the 9 monotony of the peaceful routine existence of his native Maine fishing village. Michael desires to see more of the world, and one day his wish

is gratified through an old Iriend who invites him to visit his studio in New York. Then arise twists and turns of plot that are extremely dramatic. Michael falls In love with a girl whom he later discovers has been the mistress of his best friend. His ideals shattered, he plunges into work. But he cannot forget the girl. He goes to her and finds she has - killed her former lover. The outcome of this complication is developed in a most skilful manner, which provide very fine dramatic entertainment. niDurban ANTIOCH. TRADE RIVALRY SEEN III DUTCH EAST INDIES' , : ; ( ' Br Associated Prass) .' THE HAGUE. Dec. 29. United f States authorities here fear that Amer ican Interests will be excluded from the great Djamba oil fields In the Dutch East Indies if a bill introduced in the Dutch Parliament be adopted. This measure proposes to give the con cession to these fields to a subsidiary of the Bat via Oil Company. The terri tory to be included In the concession is described as the most valuable petroleum ground . In the Dutch East Indies. ' . The field has long been the scene of commercial rivalry . between DutchEnglish and American oil groups. Americans here say that the only way in which American Interests could obtain representation there would be for ttfe Dutch government to permit them to subscribe to the stock of the proposed handling company to be formed to handle the concession. Government Has Control. In this holding company, the Dutch East Indian government and the Batavia company would, by provisions of the bill, be joint stockholder, the government sharing largely in the profits. The government, however, will have a majority on the board of directors. According to the Amsterdam Handelsblad. the preferred shares, giving a right to vote as to the control but not as to the direct management, which will be in the hands of the Batavia company, will be mostly under government control, but, in order to placate foreign, particularly American interests, a certain proportion of what are known as the "B" shares, may be Bold to, foreigners with the consent of the government A recent despatch stated that th parliament of the Dutch East Indies had under consideration a motion opposing the granting by the Dutch gov. ernment of an exclusive concession to the Djamba oil fields without the consent of the people of the colony. and family Sunday.. .. .George Bricker of Cincinnati, spent the holidays as a guest of Miss Lena Pohlar Mr. and Mrs. Omer Doty and daughter Zola, spent Christmas with Mr. and Mrs. Chapman Mr. and Mrs. Henry Pohlar entertained the following guests Christmas day: Mr. snd Mrs. Ted Pohlar.
