CHINA REPUDIATES BOLSHEVISM RUMOR,

MONARCHIST.! TREND J fBy Associated Press) ; PEKING, Dec. 24. Neither Bolshevism nor monarchism has a chance in China today, in the opinion of Dr. t Phillip Tyau,- assistant under-secre tary in th foreign office, unofficially expressed to the Associated Press. TV. Tyau, who Is a student of international law, refutes "erroneous reports and inspired .statements of a damaging nature which have been circulated recently both in China and j abroad, and which not only have misled public opinion but have a serious repercussion on trade." He writes as fellows : .The reports which are most per'fislent. are precisely those which are 'most ill-founded. One is that a mon:archial restoration has actually occurred or 13 imminent: another that ;t he country "not only ; offers an attractive field for Bolshevism but, that ;rn insidious and far-reaching campaign ;of propaganda is acutely raging, w hich .may engulf the nation. Disclose Ignorance. ; "Both reports disclose singular ignorance of existing conditions and of the whole trend of Chinese thought. The factors which led to the abdication of the Manchu dynasty nearly a decade ago are not only operative to-

;day, but have been made a hundred7

jroia more pawerrul by natural development and by the march of events throughout the world. It may bo said generally that the people at largo are iso completely accustomed to the republican idea that the conception of a hereditary ruler seems to belong to a remote past. As for Bolshevist doctrines, China probably is the last country in the world that need fear what is the nightmare of other nations. Not only is the land all divided and tightly held in small parcels by title deed among tens of millions of cultivators who comprise seven-tenths of the population, but eapltalispi in' the European sense, is virtually absent. , Chinese society, with its ancient collectivist structure, Indeed offers such

a serious challenge to Marxian com-1

munism that the practice of the latter

seems both retrograde and clement

ed a "dark red zone," of which the famous Mort Homme is typical. Nothing can be done with this. There is also a "pink zone" formed by Bethincourt, Chattancourt, and Esnes, which, it is hoped, can be reconstructed. The inhabitants of the demolished villages will be expropriated. Their land, houses and furniture will be paid for

at three times their value in 1914. and j they can go wherever they please. Some have not waited for the oitieialj intimation; they have gone to neigh-j

boring districts, notably ,in the Haute Marne, to start life afresh.-

Duke and Duchess of Manchester, Late dispatches from England tell of rumors to the effect that the Duke and Duchess of Manchester wish to obtain a divorce decree. The Duchess of Manchester was Helena Zimmerman, a Cincinnati, O., girl, daughter of the late Eugene Zimmerman.

THURSDAY BUSIEST BRITISH WORK DAY (Philadelphia Public Ledger.) What is the best work day in America? In England it is Thursday. That is the finding of industrial research board investigators of that country The London Chronicle reports that over a period of twenty weeks the uotput was registered and "graphs" were made. The workers gave their best on Wednesdays and Thursdays, but the output on Jaturday was .invariably low. When doubled (to equalize the time) it is often less than 75 per cent of that on other days. Another important conclusion was that the skilled workman ;s much more regular in his output than the worker not so well qualified He does

not get the "tired Saturday feeling" so soon. In some factories the output rises until Friday, but among the less skilled workmen It was found that Thursday was the best working day. An important consideration which the investigators kept in mind was that of the atmospheric condition in which work is done. Records of the air conditions have been taken witn the output records. In various plants the Saturday output was so low that employers found it unprofitable to operate, so they closed their establishments on that

day. From this it would appear that on a half day the worker does not give the average of a half day of production. -

Congress Gaiters Back at $15 A Pair; New Fad (From the New York Sun) Go up into the attic, grandad, and ,et out the congress gaiters. They're all the style again. Remember those old congress gaiter style of shoes, the tops of which were made of one piece of leather, and were made close-fitting

by means of the elastic gussets on each side of the tops of the shoes? They're all the fad again. Only they're patent leather. -Several nattily dressed young chaps up in the Astor were seen wearing them. They don't -cost the $1.50 that grandad used to pay, though; they cost $15 "and up."

Because women in Yoncalla, Ore., were elected to fill every political office in the town, all the men of the town council resigned in a body.

(From the London Telegraph.) PARIS In the work of reconstruction to which France is applying itself as best it can, unforseen difficulties are being met, and in the Verdun district, where the devastation was greater than in any other part of France, there are insuperable obstacles to rebuilding. On a stretch of battleground, haled with craters and strewn with bodies and shells of all sorts, stood twenty-

for the reason that it will take years to rid the land of the war wreckage, human and material. Eight hundred thousand men, half ef Ihem Frenchmen, fell on this grouna and in two years 90.000 bodies have been recovered. Only a fourth of thorn have been identified. On every mile of ground there are thousands of bodies and it cannot be stated cow long it will take to collect them. For the present, therefore, the land is regarded as sacred and it has been decided to leave it as it is. In ten years, perhaps, it may be made into pasture land, with here and there woods of rir trees. In addition to the decision not to rebuild these twenty-two villages which have disappeared, there is what is call-

You were taught at school that your body undergoes a complete change of structure every seven years. ; This tearing down and building' tip process of body tissue continues without a moment's pause throughout life. And when a man gets into a physical condition that the tissues keep breaking down and wasting away f aBter than Nature can replace them, right then he begins to grow "old". This doesn't necessarily mean, however, that he has reached an advanced, age. Thousands upon thousands of people begin to break down, their vital organs giving evidence of fast approaching decay, long before they reach middle age simply because they fail to give Nature, at the proper time, the needed help to rebuild. Extends its sincere thanks to its patrons and friends for their splendid support during the year now closing

Our trade for the year 1 920 was by far the largest in the history of the store. This, we realize, was made possible partly by the fine spirit of Christmas Giving. And, why should there not be one day of the year when generosity, true cheer, love and good will should have no limit? When we may gladden ours and others hearts with giving, and rejoice in the sunshine of happiness reflected in the faces all about us. The incentive to give marks well the existence through the centuries of a spirit allenduring, embracing within its real self, love and faith, loyalty and service, yes, a splendid method of expressing sentiment. Let us cling fast to the spirit of Christmas giving. It fosters all that is good in pure friendships.

Wishing All a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year
