LEIGH LITHOGRAPHS ARE NOW ON EXHIBIT
That no exhibit like it. or to compare with it, has ever been seen here, is the opinion of those who have seen the long delayed Lelghexhibit of lithographs which opened at the Public Art gallery Wednesday afternoon.
' The opening day is made more in
teresting by the presence of Mr. Leigh. In strength, vigor and vitality.
the lithographs by Howard Leigh may
be compared to those of the English
man, Brangwyn, who is recognized a
one of the world's greatest etchers.
The wonderful gradation of tones of light and shade has been handled as carefully as though done by a
painter. With the skillful hand of a genius he has produced through the medium of black and white the wide range of color effects rarely found except in paintings. The drawings are not only Interesting because of the beauty of the architecture which they depict, but aleo for the views of war damage and devastation. The picture of "The Ruined Doors" of the Rheims cathedral is a masterpiece in the tragic desolateness and ruin it shows. The lights in the picture are one of its most remarkable features. The drawing of the front facade of the Rouen tathedral is an example of Mr. Leigh's exquisite drawing of infinite detail. His pictures lmmortal.lze thqy tragedy of war-ruined France. The entire collection has been purchased by the French government, and lithographs may be purchased here. They are priced from $10 to $60. The- pictures have been hung in the north and east galleries'. Because of their size and number it was impossible to place them in one gallery. The gallery is open until 6 p. m. Wednesday evening, and opens from 7:30 to 10:00 Wednesday evening. Mr. Leigh will bo in the gallery Wednesday afternoon and evening.

Death Summons Comes to Mrs. Mary Otte, 78 Mrs. Mary Otte. 78 years old, died at 1:40 a .m. Wednesday at her home, 7"0 South Sixth street. She was bora Oct. 28, 1842, in Germany, but had b'en a resident of Richmond for over 50 years. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran cnurch. Mrs. Otte is i-urvived by her husband, Herman Otte; one daughter. Mrs. Ert Turman; one son, Fred Otte; and one grandchild, all of Richmond. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p. m. High School
Carol singers will go up and down the hip.h school corridors singing Thursday during part of two periods. The high school faculty will be in charge of hte Christmas program which will be presented in the auditorium Thursday morning. So "Register" will come out this week as it is not possible to have it set in time. The high school debating society has decided to call itself the Philathea Debating society. The club, which was organized some time ago has sone nameless while its members were engrossed in the more important task of framing a constitution. Members of the DuBois Literary society showed excellent amateur ability in the very creditable presentation o fa play in the auditorium Wednesday morning.
single inch above five feet.
But the taller girls who have a longing lo become comedy stars will hear with sadness that Dorothy is not so much smaller than : the others, for beauty and brevity are two of : the things required for success in the funny side of screen life. For instance, Fay Tincher, of the same organization is five feet two, Charlotte" Merriam, five feet three, along with Vera Steadman and Laura La Plante, while Teddy Sampson drops back to Fay Tincher's mark. "Daintiness Is one of the requisites in a comedy leading woman," explains Al Christie," and the smaller the packages the daintier they are." MURRAY Shirley Mason, the charming little
star of William Fox, who is coming ! to the Murray theatre Thursday in her
adaptation of Frances Marion Mitchell's popular story. "Joan of Rainbow
Springs, is known at the Fox studio in Hollywood, Calif., as the "Good Samaritan." On her way home from the studio in her car one day she passed a poor organ grinder, footsore and weary.
, who was resting with his heavy pack
on the curbstone. He had a monkey on his arm. - Miss Mason, recognizing the man's condition, offered to give him a "lift,"
j and the organ grinder accepted. Soon
Miss Mason perceived a woman friend and. stopping the car, asked if she would like to ride. The friend, as she stepped in, saw the man with the monkey. She drew back in surprise and asked disgustedly, "Surely, you don't allow monkeys in your car?" "Wei," replied the little star, "not as a rule, but you can take a back seat, where you are not likely to be seen." RICHMOND Joseph J. Dowling, who since his wonderful delineation of the Patriarch in "The Miracle Man," has come to be known as "The Miracle Man of the Screen," comes to the Richmond Theatre next Wednesday for three days. As the gallant old Kentucky Colonel in the picturization of Opie Read's well-known novel, "The Kentucky Colonel," released by Hodkinson, Joseph Dowling is said to even surpass the marvelous characterization of the spiritualistic miracle man. The story tells of the beautiful and imperishable friendship between two old Kentucky gentlemen, one a General and the other a Colonel titles which they have borne from Civil war days. In spite of the supreme test which comes when the General is led to believe that the Colonel has for many years been deceiving him in regard to his relations with his, the General's, wife, the clear white flame of their love for each other continues to burn brightly. In the wood where they meet to fight a duel, neither fires at the other. Instead they fire straight up into the air, for neither could find the courage or the desire to kill the other. This is only one of the many dramatic moments in this absorbing story laid in the beautiful purple hills of the "Blue Grass" country, where chivalry and courtesy go hand in hand with romance and adventure.
