BUILDING WORKERS WAGES DOUBLE IN FIVE YEARS, REPORT (By Associated Press) COLUMBUS, 0.. Dec. 18 Wages of workers engaged In the building trades

have just about doubled in the last five years in Ohio cities, data prepared by George F. Miles, chief statistician . fi the state industrial commission shows. Mr. Miles prepared the report at the request of various civic organizations, which are trying to fathom the high cost of building, and of other organizations of private nature, which are trying to make 1921 one of the greatest in the state's history for the erection of new homes.

In the city of Columbus, painters have been given an increase of 45 cents an hour, within the last six years, their wages today being 85 cents an hour, as compared to 40 cents in 1914. This is the greatest increase which has been made in the wages of Columbus workmen, according to Miles. Engineers and hod carriers now are receiving Just double the wages they did in 1914 and 1915, the former being paid $1 an hour, as compared with 50 cents, and the latter 80 cents, as compared with 40 cents, the report said. Bricklayers are being paid $1.25 an hour, as compared with 70 cents five years ago; 'carpenters, 90 cents, as compared with 50 cents in 1914; cement workers. 80 cents, an advance of 30 cents an hour; plasterers, $1.12 as against 60 cents; plumbers, $1 an hour, compared to 56 cents; sheet metal workers, 60 cents, as again st 37 cents, and stone masons $1.15, as against 65 cents an hour six years ago. Carpenters In the city of Akron were granted the largest Increase, they

being paid $1.10 an hour this year, as I

compared with only 40 cents an hour in 1914 and 1915, or an increase of 175 per cent. The table shows that the uniform wage for brick masons throughout the state this year is $1.25 an hour; carpenters from 75 cents an hour in Ham

ilton, to $1.25 In Cleveland; hod carriers, from 65 cents in Zanesville to $1 in Akron; plumbers from 87 cents in Toledo to $1.15 in Dayton, and plasterers from $1 to $1.25 an hour. It is a noticeable fact that In Akron, where the highest wages were

paid, is one of the cities of the state that is showing a lower price trend

GERMAN SOCIALISTS

ATTACK HIGH PRICES

(By Associated Pren1 , BERLIN. Dec 20. Socialist news

papers and communist agitators are making much of the misery resulting

from unemployment, high co?t of

necessities and the winter, and are

contrasting the condition of the poor

with, the" prodigal spending of the profiteers. There is peihaps less extravagance than there was before the war, but the number of Idle and very

poor is said to be greater, and emphasizes present conditions. '

Workers for the "red revolution

with the slogan of "poverty and

profiteer," the ammunition they most frequently employ, are urging the overthrow of the government and the establishment of a dictatorship of the

proletariat to relieve the conditions they call intolerable. As the misery of the workless increase with the advancing winter they expect to gain enough strength to make an effort to overturn the present regime, which

they blame for the troubled economic conditions. Die Freiheit, organ of the Independent Social democratic party, issues an "earnest warning" to the government that conditions are coming to a head and that it will be ill for the administration if some tangible effort is not made to relieve idleness, it adds: "It is time for the capitalistic regime to take heed. . The proletariat has not

lost Its strength; It is growing stronger against that time when the hoar of decision shall striKe." - - .

British subjects who traveled at their own expense from the United States or other parts of the world to join their country's military forces during the war with Germany are entiUed to receive refunds of their passage money.
