RATES CHIEF THEME AT MEETING OF OHIO
(By Associated Press) COLUMBUS, O., Dec. 20. Rate hearings predominate on the calendar of the state public utilities commission for the week. Today the commission heard an application of the Washington Gas and Electric company, Washington C. H., seeking to have increased natural gas rates, suspended
by the commission reinstated. Tomorrow morning the commission will hear the same kind of an action brought by the same concern, on heating rates. Tuesday afternoon the Marysville Light and Power company will Beek to have increased power rates, suspended by the commission, reinstated. Wednesday morning, the Chillieothe Electric Railway Light and Power company will plead for increased pow
er rates. In the afternoon petition of the C. C, C. and St. L. Railway to abandon Its station at Woodington, Dark county, will be heard. Thursday, the commission will hear application of the Star Telephone company for reinstatement of a proposed toll charge, set aside by order of commissioners. CINCINNATI, O., Dec. 20. To pro
mote a safety campaign among the p'ublic sschool children here, the "Cincinnati Safety Scouts" have been organized. There will be two classes of scouts scouts and major scouts. Scouts may qualify under certain rules, but to get into the second class, a boy will have to memorize the entire list of safety rules, and in addition, make a report of one or more cases of certain types of unsafe conditions; of unsanitary conditions; of persons causing danger; lack of danger signals where needed, because of recklessness of automobile drivers, or the violation of lire safety rules by any person. Scout masters are to be named in each school. CLEVELAND. O., Dec. 20 Personal tax returns for 1920 in Cuyahoga county have increased $433,740,410, or 120 per cent since 1915, according to records at the county auditor's office. Returns over 1919 increased $97,493,450, or 14 per cent.

COLUMBUS, O., Dec. 20. Five presentations, comprising gifts of importance, interest and great historical value, were made to the Ohio State Archaelogical and Historical Society at its annual meeting here last week. Former Governor Campbell presided
over the program, which included the official placing and listing of relics and implements of the mound-builders, vnearthed last summer at Camp Sherman. A trust fund of $47,124 was turned ever to the organization by Governor James M. Cox, earned by film exhibitions of activities of soldiers at Camp Sherman. The money is to be used for the construction of a permanent memorial to Ohio soldiers who fought in the world war, and which will take the form of an addition to the museum and library building at the entrance to Ohio State University campus. A library of Ohloana. said to be the largest privately owned collection of its kind, was presented by Claude Meeker, of Columbus, Charles F. Kettering, of Dayton, gave the society a mound at Miamisburg. said to be the lareest Indian mound in Ohio, together v. ith land sufficient for a park, and a collection of Indian relics. Relics of John Brown, famous anti-slavery exponent, were presented by Mr. and Mrs. T. B. Alexander, of Put in-Bay. John G. Desliler, of Columbus, gave the society a cane, one of four made

Presented Academy (By Associated Press) NEW YORK, Dec. 20. A silver candelabra, a gift to Commodore Perry from the business men of Shanghai and Hongkong, China, after his famous voyage to the Orient in 1853 and 1854, has Just been presented to the United States naval academy at Nnnapolis, by Perry Tiffany, of New York, grandson of the cotmraodore. The candelabra, which has been in the family's possession since Commodore Perry's death in 1858, was given by Mr. Tiffany in memory of his grandfather and his long naval career..

GERMAN GOAL FIELDS

The General Committee of the German Coal Miners' Federation has notified Chancellor Fehrenbacb-that they intend to force through the Reichstag a law for the socialization of the national coal fields In an open letter to the Chancellor, the committee has called upon the government to make an. unequivocal declaration on the issue The miners also demanded to know how soon the government proposes to submit to the Reichstag the draft of the new law.

CLEVELAND. O.. Dec. 20 City Forester Hyatt is looking for the bigpest, sturdiest and best looking pine tree in Cuyahotra County. He wants it for communitv Christmas tree, to blaze forth in Public Square with hundreds of colored lights. At first it was Fiirgested that the tree be built up with a number of smaller ones, but that idea was abandoned. Five thousands dollars worth of resents will be distributed by the Cleveland Advertising Club at its Christmas banquet, Dec. 29, to 600 Cleveland youngsters.
CLEVELAND. O., Dec. 20. The Cleveland Humane Society has requests for more than 200 babies for pdoption and can only supply fifty of them, according to officials.
