DARING BANK ROBBERS' TRIAL STARTS TODAY; MYSTERIOUS THIEVES
(By Associated Press) ROANOKE, Va.. Dec. 18. William Porter and Charles Carter, captured by Roanoke police in the early morning of Nov. 19 a few hours after the Bank of Glasgow, Va., was robbed of f 96,253 In liberty bonds and securities, were placed on trial here today. In a pitched battle on the outskirts
of Roanoke, James B. Rodgers, of
Philadelphia, driving a large touring automobile, was killed by the police : and his companions. Porter, who bears
the- aliases of William Welsh and Bellfontaine "Slim," and Carter whose alias is Charles Wilkes, were arrested. Much of the loot was found in the automobile. The police -had been informed of the robbery by the Glasgow bank officials at 3 o'clock In the morning and Immediately set watch on the three roads from that place. v When Intercepted on one of the loads an hour later, the automobile was going at high speed and turned turtle when an effort was made to swerve around the police patrol which had been placed across the road. In the battle which followed Rodgers was killed and a policeman wounded. About 50 shots were exchanged between the authorities and the bandits. In the automobile was found a quart flask of nitroglycerine carefully packed in cotton in a wooden box. Loot Identified. Although all the loot was identified as belonging to the Glasgow bank, local police maintained that the men were responsible for robberies in Virginia, North Carolina, Georgia and Tennessee. In addition to the valuables the three men had about $1,800 in cash. Half of this was found on Porter on his second day in jail when he refused to take a bath. Baltimore authorities claim to have identified Porter as a "yeggman of 20 years standing," who was arrested

scores of people viewed his body. The only clue the police have is a state-' mcnt of Porter's that Rodgers toldj him his name was Beale. Porter ad-i ded that he knew Rodgers only a week before the Glasgow robbery. ; Bank officials and others have In-1 tervlewed the men in jail here but failed to obtain any information con-1 necting them with any other than the Glasgow robbery. The Glorious and Universal Thought
CHRI
STMAS
Giving and securing gifts interests everybody at Christmas time. The days are now at hand for comfortable, clearminded purchasing, when best thoughts may find highest expression in appropriate Christmas selections. Every merchant is trying his very best to express in some way the superiority of his merchandise, but with all the vigorous much-a-does, discerning people will use their own good judgment and patronize the store whose merit is based on past achievements. Think this over
You want the best your money can buy at Christmas time and all the time and you, too, deserve the highest service that can be rendered and this can be had if you will shop in the morning between the hours of nine and eleven. You will find that you can make your selections more leisurely, see the gift displays when they are at their best and have the comforts not enjoyed later in the day. Between two and five o'clock in the afternoon we seldom have less than 200 joyful, light-hearted and happy Christmas shoppers in our aisles. If you enjoy lots of company come in the afternoon.
