ENGINEER REPORTS PALESTINE RESOURCES EQUAL TO CALIFORNIA ".' (fey Associated Pres NEW YORK. Dec 13. The natural resources of . Palestine are greater than those of Southern California and are able to - support decently about 4.000.000 people, Harry Thomas Cory, former director-general of forign relief for the American Red Cross declared in a report to . the Zionist
Organisation of America made public fcere today. , . ' Mr. Cory, - a California engineer, wenfr to Palestine recently at he invitation of Justice Brandeis, ' honorary president of the - international - and American Zionist Organization. He had just .Investigated the Nile River irrigation projects in Egypt, Mr. Cory said his findings after a short survey of the. Holy Land 'were in complete accord with those of Sir William Willcox, head of the Nile rrojects commission of the Egyptian government, and Professor R. H. Forbes, of the University of Nebraska end an American student of desert irrigation. ' Resembles California. "The western -slope of Palestine is naturally better . than the Southern California region in and about Los iuigeles, which has made possible that city's enormously rapid development," Mr. Cory said. "The configuration is strikingly, similar, and J was therefore not surprised to learn that it was planned to irrigate 150,000 acres of this coastal land in relatively small units, largely by pumps. "The soil of western Palestine is better in all essential particulars, more fertile and more favorable for
intensive development. In the lower
regions there is no danger from frost. Nowhere in Southern California is there a frost-proof area.
"The greater quantity and better
distribution, of the rainfall renders Iry farming easier and safer in Palestine regions. "The valley of the Jordan is an
entirely different matter as to climatic
conditions and many other features
However, Sir William, Professor
Forbes and I are in complete agreement as to the feasibility of irriga
ting at least 500.000 acres there. Sir
William and I are entirely satisfied
&s to the ability to economically develop 50,000 horsepower in hydro
electric plants.
"The 500,000 acres are much more comparable to the irrigated lands in the Imperial Valley, the southeastern corner of California overlapping into
Mexico.

Meat Dealers of Ohio Start Reducing Prices EATON, 0., Dec. 13. Slashing of meat prices has precipitated a price war among local meat dealers, much to the satisfaction of the local consuming public. One dealer has swung the "cleaver
on prices and chopped them down to 10 and 17 cents a pound retail. All dealers have not met these prices at this time. Lard is quoted at 5. pounds for $1. The price cutting started last week in a mild way, but on Saturday the real price war developed. Two deal

SHARP METAL BREAKS
STUDIED IN ILLINOIS
URBAN A, 111.. Dec. 13. Metal parts such as freight car axles, automobile
shafts, and airplane parts have a tend
ency to snap oft" suddenly and entirely without warning as If they had become tired and completely worn out. What causes this 7 Science is anxious to know, and is trying to find out through a. stuy of the 'fatigue of metals" now being conducted at the University of Illinois under the direct charge of Prof. H. F. Moore. A special laboratory room has been given over by the university for this Investigation, which is carried on as a part of the work of the Engineering Department Station. The work was started during the war and has been done in conjunction with the National Research Council and the Engineering Foundation of New York. The General Electric Company recently became a partner in this co-operative effort, and has made considerable contribution in money to be used to further the investigation, especially with a view to the study of the problems of fatigue of steel used in steam turbines. It is known that the rotating disc of the turbines often vibrates laterally due to the uneven distribution of the steem to the wo sides. The resistance of the various metal3 to this repeated ctrain is to be tested at the university. Success in the investigation of the cause of "fatigue of metals" will mean a saving of millions of dollars in machinery and the discovery of a valuable scientific law.
