UNION CITY SCHOOLS ARE ORDERED CLOSED, SMALLPOX IS CAUSE

WINCHESTER. -Ind., Dec. 9. The r chools of Union City were closed Friday afternoon, by order of Dr. Hurty. 'of the Indiana State. Board of Health. On account of smallpox. Dr. Fred Ruby, secretary of the Union City Board of Health, ordered a general vaccination of the pupils of the city schools and St. . Mary's Catholic school. St. Mary's' Catholic school complied with the request, as did all, except 74 pupils of the public schools and these were permitted to continue in their attendance by the City Board oi Education. Dr. Ruby communicated with Dr. Hurty and it is said he at once ordered the schools closed. The schoolhouse burned two years ago, and since that time they have had school in the city library basement and the different churches. Finds Liquor in Car. Chief of Police Fletcher, who captured a late model Buick touring car, east of the Wilson Sale Barn, Friday night and found in it concealed in a secret pocket under the front seat, a quantity of liquor. Chief Fletcher's suspicions were aroused during the afternoon, at the movements of two strange men and later seeing them drive into an alley where they were met by two men of this city. He took hold of the strangers but they Jerked away and made their escape. Fletcher then took possession of the car. Saturday a woman from Newcastle came to the city and claimed the car, stating that it had been stolen by a man in her employ for a Joy ride. The car however, was not released. Huber Gives Bond. H. J. Huber. of Warsaw, came to th& city Saturday, and gave bond in the sum of $2,000 for his appearance in court. The recent grand Jury returned two indictments against him, one for embezzlement and the other for grand larceny. Huber was one of the promoters of the Marine Tire and Rubber company. Plan Memorial Building. The memorial committee appointed by the commissioners of Randolph county to select a cite and submit plans for a community memorial buildlnp in this city for World War Soldiers, has made a report. An option has been taken on the lot, 83x165 feet, where the HIrsch homestead now stands, in North Meridian street, and also the Hirsch lot 60x80 feet, across Ihe alley west, and Ihe lots on North Meridian street, owned by Harper Mosier and Dr. G. C. Markle. On these lofs it is expected to erect a building 165 feet square, the architecture will be in the form of a Greek Temple, according to present plans, constructed of brick and stone, and will be fireproof. The cost will be approximately $400,000. The first floor is to contain an auditorium which will seat 1.500 people, provided with a gallery and large stage, with ample space to accommodate traveling shows. Community rooms for men and women, the administrator's office, checkroom and toilets will also be included on the first floor. The basement will contain a prymnasium and natatorium,- showers, locker rooms and a band room. The mpzannlne floor is to be a convention hall, with a seating capacity of 250. The G. A. R., W. R. C, D. A. R. and Red Cross will be allowed the use of the hall for meetings. On the gallery floor will be found a booth for a moving picture machine, rooms for the American Legion" and for Boy and Girl Scouts. Sheriff Goes for Darnell. Monday Sheriff U. N. Davisson and "Prosecutor Ernest Dunn, 'went to Springfield, 111., with requisition papers for the return of Benjamin F. Darnell, who is wanted in this county, in a grand Jury indictment, charging him with embezzlement. He was arrested In that city a week ago and refused to come without requisition papers. He was released on $2,000 bond until Sheriff Davisson' arrived with the papers. Darnell came to this city several months ago and was one of the chief promoters of the organization of the Marine Tire and Rubber company. W. R. C. Elects Officers. Officers elected by the Woman's Relief Corps for the ensuing year are as follows: President, Eva Courtney; vice president, Minnie Davisson; Junior rice president, Sarah Clevenger; conductor, May Wallace; guard, Ruth Smith ; treasurer, Sarah Bailey; chaplain, Jessie Rupe; delegate, May Smith and alternate, Ellen King. Leaves For West. Miss Edith Ludy, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alonzo Ludy, left Saturday evening for San Francisco, where she will be united in marriage to Frank Thompson, Wednesday afternoon. Raymond Summers has resigned his position as parcel post and substitute letter carrier, to become a rural route carrier, on No. 4, out of Lynn. Suit for divorce has been filed by Cora F. Mosier vs. Henry A. Mosier. Resume Use of Pest House. The county pest house, which has not been used for contagious patients for 10 years is now in use for-small-pox patients from the Walsh Construction company, who are working on double tracking the Big 4 railroad west of here. Last week three Croatians working with, the company were found broken out with the disease and were taken to the pest house. The disease has been mild in form and has been in the "county for nearly two months, no deaths resulting. Several schools throughout the county have been closed. Winchester has had nearly 50 cases but the schools have not been closed. 'After months of excellent service he returned to England after the armistice and tigain joined the London Film company. America's fascination, lingered, however, and it was not long before he returned to the United States with th idea of permanently attaching himself to Hollywood's motion picture colony. MURRAY.
