TRAFFIC GOES ON AS j BRIDGE ENGINEERS ; REPLACE STRUCTURE
, (By Associated Press) CHICAGO, Dec 7. City bridge engineers are performing an unusual feat In replacing an old bridge without interfering with thousands of elevated and surface line patrons who cross it dally . The old Wells street swing bridge, across which all north side elevated cars and several surface lines puss, is to be' superseded by a new double deck bascule type bridge, which breaks in the center, the two halves rising into the air to permit passage of ships. As months are required to complete the bridge some way had to be found lo erect it without interfering with the elevated traffic. As a result the two leaves were built straight up into the air. Holes were left in what will eventually be the floor of the new bridge, and through these holes ele'vated and surface cars pass without interruption. When the bridge is completed the engineers plan to swing the old double decked structure around on its central ' pier.-ropening the river draw, then cut a "U" shaped hole with oxy-acetylene torches in It, into which the new bridge will drop. Wrecking of the old bridge can then be completed at leisure. Less than 24 hours, it is estimated, will be required to make the final shift from old to new bridge.
