CHRISTMAS CANDIES MANUFACTURED HERE ARE PRICED LOWER

Christmas candy prices will not be iiiairi anj till. rv. i j j i in: duui uellne in the sugar market, according 1o retail dealers of the city. Candles manufactured by home Industries will Bell from 15 to 20 cents cheaper on j the pound cheaper than during th summer months, but candles Dougni from the wholesalers and standard manufacturers will sell at about the same price. Prices for candies this year are about the same as last year during the holiday season. Sugar was about two cents higher on the open market at this time In 1919 than now, and this plight difference in price makes no appreciable difference in the selling pi ice today. The possessor of a "sweet tooth" will have to pay from 35 cents to $1.60 per pound foi his supply, this varying " according to the grade bought and the manner in which it is put up. Last year candies had a range of from 60 cents to $1.60 a pound, and during the early part of last summer the price went even higher than that. Back to Normal. "The decline in the past few weeks has been from the high mark as it was last summer and as a result, the prices this year are nearly back to the normal of last Christmas," a local manufacturer said. Peanuts are one of the holiday delicacies that have returned to a pre-war basis, now selling for 15 and 20 cents a pound. Rox candy or package candy will show no change, dealers say. This they atribute to the high cost of labor and material used in the boxes and decorations. A general misunderstanding is said to prevail that the price of sugar is one of the big items in manufacture, say al lthe dealers. The real cost is in labor and overhead expense, both of which have gone up in the last year, they say. Some Dealers Lose. The fact that Christmas candy or ders are placed froom four to six I months before the holiday season prevents any very appreciable difference in the market. Managers all state that they are making an effort to retail their products according to the present market price and not on the price paid in buying. This is causing a loss, they say, but in order to help get back to normalcy they say they are willing to take their losses. "The candy man is hit hard tni.5 year," said one dealer. "The goods "we are selling was bought when sugar was at the peak price and we4 tie now forced to make some reduc tions to meet the present market price of sugar." Fruits, figs and dates have all come down about 15 or 20 per cent, according to merchants. This is a welcome (act to many, people who have been planning on making their own candy. SENATOR NEW ENDS CABINET DISCUSSION INDIANAPOLIS, Dec. 3. Senator Harry S. New has sent word to Indianapolis friends that he will be a candidate for renomination and that he would not under any consideration accept an appointment in President Harding's Cabinet should such a place be tendered him. "I would not consider an appointment even if Mr. Harding should offer me two Cabinet appointments," said a letter received from Senator New yesterday. He added in this letter that it is his intention to seek renomination for the Senate. This letter and others received by his Indiana friends sweeps aside all the gossip to effect that Mr. New might accept a place in the new Cabinet. Close to New President. Senator New, who served in the recent campaign as chairman of the Republican national speakers' bureau, has the personal friendship and confidence of President-elect Harding and doubtless could have an appointment to some Federal position if he desired. Mr. New, however, makes it plain that he has no desire for an appointment of any kind and that he will seek to succeed himself on the expiration of his term as senator two years hence. An Associated Press dispatch from Washington last night was to the effect that neither Senator New nor Senator Lodge would be willing to accept a place in the Harding Cabinet, each desiring to consider his service in the Senate. Both Senators lyidge and New are members of the foreign relations committee. For Your Xmas Tree Decorations See Us Have you tried our home made cinnamon squares?
