NEW EVIDENCE OF NORSE EXPLORATION BROUGHT TO LIGHT
Apparently new eridence of the exploration of interior America by the Norsemen in the fourteenth century comes in an account from Barrett. Minn., which appears in the St. Paul Pioneer-Press. It follows: The skulls and bones o! thirteen men recently found under the residence of Lars O. Pjelle, at first thought to be the remains of a party of Indians, are now believed to be those of a party of Norsemen, who, according to the Kensington, Minn., Runestone, found several years ago, came westward on an exploring journey in 1362. Under a Huge Oak The skulls and partial skeletons were unearthed when Pjelle decided to cut down an oak tree near his house at Barrett. After the tree was felled, Pjelle began the work of removing the stump. The roots of the oak penetrated a layer of stone, apPUBLIC SALE PyfoMc Sale As T am removing from the eommunity. parently laid by. hand, and under this layer the graves of th,e men were found. - - A flint arrowhead in the hip of one of the skeletons and evidences of a tomahawk blow on the skull of another show conclusively that the party was cut down by Indians. The fact that the bodies were buried In the manner in which they were found, indicates that the Runestone inscription was made by this party. Runestone Translated "... The inscription as translated by the Minnesota Historical society follows: "Eight Goths and twenty-two Norwegians are upon a journey of discovery from Vinland westward. We camped by two skerries one day's journey from this stone. We were out fishing one day. When we returned we found ten men red with blood and dead. A. V. M. (Ave. Virgo Maria Save us from evil.
