Savings Bank The bureau's saving bank, for the purpose of promoting thrift, and the success this undertaking has achieved was described in the Friday issue- of the Palladium. . A new function of the bureau is the direction of the activities coming under the head of anti-tuberculosis work throughout Wayne county. Thla ' work is to be carried on by a committee composed of members from each township in the county as well as members of the Tuberculosis hospital board, the city and county health officials and other interested persons. Tuberculosis menaces every community, every home and every individual, and yet it is curable and preventable. The work of this committee will be financed chiefly from the proceeds of the sale of Christmas seals. The bureau has a legal aid committee in order to assure justice to the poor who are unable to pay for legal assistance. The members of the committee, who are weU known attorneys, have kindly offered to donate their services when xequested. The bureau has a regularly employed visiting nurse and in its nursing activities has the cooperation of the nursing committee of the Wayne county chapter, American Red Cross, which has recently employed a trained and experienced public health nurse whose eervices extend to the entire county. A greater part of the time of the- bureau's nurse is spent in connection with the medical ' examinations and follow-up work conducted by the board of school trustees, which pays one-half of the nurse's salary. There is urgent need for the services of another visiting nurse and it is hoped that the contributions will be sufficient to make it possible to put another nnrse in the field at once. Supply Clothing A new committee has been named by the bureau whose special responsibility will be the supplying of clothing where needed. One of its functions is the remodeling of garments not adapted for immediate use. The committee plans to assist unskilled mothers by giving practical Instructions in sewing. Child Welfare A child welfare committee appointed for the coming year has two departments, physical and social. It Is the purpose of the physical division to cooperate with the schools in the work of locating and correcting physical defects; to conduct registration and medical examinations of children under school age, and follow up cases needing attention; to cooperate with the public health nursing committee in prenatal and other baby welfare work done through the visiting nurses; to assist the tuberculosis committee! in providing milk lunches to undernourished children; and assist with other child conservation work. The social division plans to promote wholesom -recreation for the boys and girls cf the community; to reduce and prev-rt juvenile delinquency; to assist th judge of the juvenile court in securing probation officers, to reduce child labor, etc. Investigate Applications. The bureau investigates all applications for relief made to the Truster of Wayne Township. It investigates also for the Richmond Board of School Trustees, all applications for books, shoes and clothing for 'school children and countersigns all orders for same. It conducts various other kinds of social investigations. Through these inquiries it seeks to discover the causesof distress, both apparent and hidden; to l.rotect the community from imposters: to prevent indiscriminate and duplicate giving; to furnish information and knowledge on matters relating to community conditions and needs. A committee composed of a representative of the Ministerial Association, the Penny Club, Women's Relief Corps, Union Mission, Salvation Army, Hoard of Children's Guardians. St. Elizabeth Aid Society and the Social Service Bureau: the Trustee of Wayne Township and the Auditor of Wayne County has been appointed to consider the care and treatment of families cdming under the attention of the bureau. It is the function of this committee not only to see that distress is relieved through the proper source but to formulate plans for the permanent welfare of each memberof the family. Colored Auxiliary. A committee of twelve colored women representing each of the colored churches and other organizations has ben appointed to take a definite part in the work of upbuilding the homes of dependent colored families. The bureau acts as an agent of the AVayne County Chapter, American Red Cross in cenducting Home Service work for ex-service men of Wayne County and their families. S.
