s? v ElaineHammerstein, will essay in 1 her latest Selznick picture, "The , Daughter Pays," which comes to the!

Murrette theatre Friday a role that of- . Xers greater dramatic and emotional opportunities than any she has yet appeared !n. In the screen version of the story by Mrs. Bailie Reynolds the .,. Star reveals - two striking domestic questions that cannot but retain the i interest of motion picture audiences. The first question is whether a woman c'.are risk her happiness on the finanrial altar, and this is augmented by how great a sacrifice should a mother demand in the name of filial devotion. It is intimated that these questions - nre not answered in the picture. On the contrary, the spectator will have s.' the pleasure of pondering over the issues that are interwoven in the fabric of the plot, r- Miss Hammerstein is cast in the r role of a serious, refined and sensii five girl who is forced to bear untold r humiliation in her marriage of-convenience with a wealthy man whose one object in ltte is to make the daught ter pajfor an injury done him by her I mother.

t MURRAY Ediiii Roberts, the piquant Univers- - al rfar, delighted an overflowing audience at the Murray theatre last night with her splendid acting in "The Adorable Savage," a photodrama of the South Seas by Ralph Stock. Although this dainty star has attained success playing the lighter roles in which she has recently appeared, her portrayal of Marama in this exotic romance strengthens hef hold in the top round of filmdom's ladder. In The Adorable Savage" Miss Roberts enacts a" singularly difficult role. She is first seen as a young girl - of cultare and refinement who returns to the Fiji Islands, to her father's

plantation, to learn that her mother,

who died at her birth, was a native.

Apalled at the thought that in her veins flows the blood of the South

Seas, she decides to cast off her robe of refinement and try to accustom her

self to the semi-savage ways and customs of her mother's people. Miss Roberts' extreme finesse in portraying the battle of the bloods, one urging a return to culture, the other a descent to the abyss, proclaims her an artist of the highest type. The struggle between a young American and the native ruler for the love of Marama lends physical excitement and interest to the story. MURRAY VAUDEVILLE The' opening act in the Murray vaudeville bill was compelled to work

in street costume owing to failure of j

ine costume trunns to arrive, Dut me handicap did not mar the popularity of Lamont and Wright, two clever young women who entertained with "mouth organs" or "French harps" or whatever you want to call 'em. Most of their selections are impersonations of a rube player with the customary "by hickory" stuff and are well received by the audience. The" young women start the bill off with a bang and are pleasant forerunners of the big acts that follow. A young lady very much up to the times, contrary to the inference of her name, "Pagana," delighted the audience in the second act with clever violin selections. She appeared In a strikingly pretty gown at the opening, but reappeared later in a leopard's skin, then a black velvet costume. Her winsome ways bordered on the "flirty," but greatly pleased her admirers. "Something Different" was the keynote of the act staged by Clifton and Kramer, in which K. Iarson, keeper of a general store, took the leading part. Excellent characterization of the Larson type was a feature of the act. "The woman in the case" registered a distince hit with a solo while the economical Larson was off stage.

Five exceedingly clever acrobats in an eccentric act composed of novelty dances, juggling and lighting-like tumbling hold the headline place with ease. The troup all appear in oriental costumes with special drop and settings which give a unique effect unequalled in any of the acrobatic acta seen here recently.

BOSTON POLICE UNION SURRENDERS CHARTER

BOSTON, Nov. 19. More than 800 members of the Boston policemen's union voted unanimously Thursday to instruct officers of the union to surrender its charter to the American Federation of Labor. A statement

issued after the meeting said that the "conditions" leading to the police strike of 1919, "have In many ways

been remedied and efforts are being made to improve them at all times." No members of the present police force are members of the union. Referring to the strike, the statement said that the policemen "acted at that time as their best judgment guided them to do." Their action, it added, "was not intended as an affront to law and order, nor did they expect their action would bring about the unfortunate condition that resulted."

Keeper Finds Jewel Gone; Colored Class Substituted (P.y Associated Press.) LONDON, Nov. 19. Sir George Younghusband, keeper of the Jewel House at the Tower of London, has just revealed the fact that one of the British crown Jewels, of which he Is custodian, is an imitation. The stone was believed to be a magnificent aquamarine, but proved on examination to be only a piece of colored glass. It figured first in the crown of King James JI. The mystery of when the imitation was substituted for the real stone has not been solved.
