SCHOOL CONFERENCE WILL ADVISE CHANGES

IN A hN AN h AWN

hi was w INDIANAPOLIS, Nov. 18. prastic changes in the school attendance laws of the state will be recommended to the legislature by school officials and child welfare organizations of the state. Decision on a number of important

matters concerning the proposed changes in the law was reached at a conference held Wednesday in the office of L. N. Hlnes. state superintendent of public instruction. A bill erabodying the recommendations of the conference is being prepared by the state child welfare commission and will be submitted to Governor Goodrich about Dec. 1. The most important feature of the recommendations of the conference is a proposal to increase the age for compulsory school attendance from 14 to 16 years and to require all children to complete the eighth grade before leaving the schools. Under the present law children who have reached the minimum age of 14 years may leave school after completing the fifth grade. Other States Stringent. Members of the conference pointed cut that all the states adjoining Indiana have laws much more stringent concerning compulsory school attendance than are In effect in Indiana. The fact, that under the present law ehiH dren are permitted to leave school Walter becoming 14 years old, is regarded as a serious handicap to (he educational development of the state. Representative of Amish commun

ities in Lagrange county appeared before the conference and urged the lowering of some of the present attendance standards of the state. These representatives suggested that the minimum age for leaving school for girls be reduced from 34 to 13 years old, and that girls be required to complete only fifth grade. They favored leaving the age requirement for boys at 14 years old. The recommendations of the Araish representatives met with the unanimous disapproval of members of the conference. Favor Attendance Officer. Administration of attendance laws

of the state through the stale department of public instruction was urged by members of the conference. It was recommended that the present state board of truancy be abolished and the duties of the board transferred to the state board of education. Provision for the appointment of a state attendance of officer will be made in the bill offered to the legislature.

The Success of Your

Thanksgiving Dinner May Depend on the Flour You Use A lot depends on your choice of a flour this year. Only four per cent of the whole hard winter wheat crop was strong enough to produce flour that will do really fine baking. Enterprise you can count on. It is milled from this "four per cent wheat" even tho we had to pay the highest ?remium we have ever paid for every bushel we bought, ou needn't worry about your Thanksgiving baking if you use Enterprise Flour. Enterprise costs more than ordinary flour because of its high and absolutely dependable quality. But think of the better baking it Till do. And a saek will go further.
