ALL INDIANA CITIES WILL SEND FIREMEN TO FIRE CONVENTION

(By Associated Tress) INDIANAPOLIS. Nov. IS. Every Indiana city, town and village having a Are department of any sort, is urged by State Fire Marshal Friedley to be represented at the state fire college, to be held at the state fair grounds, Nov. 2Sth to Dec. 4th, inclusive. Expert firemen. Mr. Friedley announces, will give Instructions to Indiana firemen of the latest methods of fire fight

ing, first aid and rescue work. Attention of city officials in the Mate aJso has been called to a provision in state law permitting the

municipalities to pay the exenses of delegates to the convention, which is lo be held in connection with the fire college. "The convention will be made a week's training of value to the firemen." says an announcement by Mr. Friedley. "Many Ideas In safeguarding property, in its inspection and in the discovery of hidden dangers, the rescue of those endangered, and first aid to the injured all will be given a practical demonstration. "Firemen will be taught the use of the ladder in scaling perpendicular vails. The smoke helmet and gas mask will bo demonstrated. Proper care for fire fighting equipment will be exemplified. "The active participation in the college of the fire fighters will certainly

result 1 more efficiency at home and will be of direct benefit to each department."

Split Switch Defined; Term is Misunderstood "The accident was due to a spilt switch." This is a common expression sometimes right and probably just 35 often wrong. The wrong use comes from a lack of clear, understanding of what con

stitutes a "split" switch, it often being confused with the term "open" switch. ! A split switch is one that really splits one that separates after it is ret in the position it ought to be in For instance, if, after the front truik of a car passes over the movable point, this point is jarred out of position and the rear truck takes the other track or leaves the track entirely, that

is because the switch has become split. This is, of course, due to defect in construction; excessive wear; an oh stacle, such as a stone working into the point, or some unexpected, unexplained happening beyond control of the motorman. On the other IrSnd, an open switch is the 'result of a deliberate act one that is wholly under the control of the motorman or those in authority ovar him. A motorman may carelessly run into an open switch, but the fact remains that the switch was left open, either properly or improperly, by some one; its being open is adways an act of actual manual labor. Every singletrack line has switches for the purpose of constituting meeting places of cars going in opposite directions. Generally speaking, the

switch points are set so that in passing - the cars go to the right, and where there are sidingB that is to say, one end switches the points are set bo that unless they are deliberately moved from its standard position and necessitate a car leaving th main-line track, the switch is the open switch.
